Re: POV Question (8 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
The POV character may know anything you want them to know without having to reveal it to the reader. A major character in my novel would be an example. The protagonist talks with this character quite frequently but no one else knows anything about this character though clues are left with each encounter. A few readers have come close to guessing, but not one was sure of the true meaning of the character until finally repealed by the protagonist. No one ever expressed being "cheated" along the way. Why try to change your approach for no valid reason? Take care. Vern

Good idea. I’m swallowing a UV tanning light and connecting myself to a Lysol IV.
LOL, good God, don't listen to PeePee. Check insurance wise, insurance wise, Ray, ignore PeePee period, and for the rest of you folks, don't use hydroxychloroquine either. Hope I covered it all. Love your wit TW. Take care. Vern

Good to see you made it through Ray. You might want to keep tabs on what the government is doing; they were talking about covering the treatment if insurance didn't. Haven't head if that has gone through or not, but still a chance. Take care. Vern

Here's an update: The owner of the site just PMed me on Facebook, telling me he'd removed the pirated novel. The link now goes to a "Not Available" page. He was very nice about it and once I sent him the first chapter from an archived copy from 2013, he acknowledged I was the original author and removed the offender.
Bill
Congrats on a positive result. Maybe you can incorporate that plot line with a few more sinister twists into your next novel. Take care. Vern

Hello everyone!
I blindly dove into writing as a hobby in 2018, and have since come to realise that I really love it. Came to this place (and a number of other places) in search of constructive feedback, since I want my stuff to be as compelling as possible. Hope I can provide some myself and help others improve as well.
Welcome. Ditto my post above. Take care. Vern

I guess the sunny side might be if it takes off and makes millions, it's in your name and you could then afford a good lawyer to go after all of it. At least that's what I tell folks who ask about the danger of having my book stolen from a site such as this or similar ones. Of course it would be easier to have recourse if it were in the U.S. but I suppose at some point it might make sense for overseas as well. At any rate, good luck going forward and hopefully the site will stop any further misuse. Take care. Vern

You're welcome, I'm sure. Well, it's better than silence while we're sitting at home or walking around like bank robbers. I'm still waiting on that one. BTW, folks, a toilet paper factory blew up in Maine so better stock up on magazines and corn cobs, lol. Take care. Vern

Re: Microsoft now flagging two spaces after period an error (19 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
How about a huge philosophical white space I call Schrödinger's whitespace? Doesn't the very act of printing "This space intentionally left blank" defy the statement? Quite a few novels have blank pages at the end, but are they really blank, or was there something supposed to be printed there?
Bill
Well, the pages were blank until they put "This space intentionally left blank" on them, which I guess could be rather moronic if you thought about it long enough, but I'm sure we're not going to do that. Right? Anyway, those pages are initially left blank (before the aforementioned addition) because there are times when additional pages might have to be added and instead of having to reset the entire book they simply use those pages to adjust the numbering and placement of the pages. Now, since we know that, why is it that all that maneuvering couldn't be done the way we move stuff around in Word or such programs. Well, I don't know and suppose someone could ask a printer and inform inquiring minds. We ae inquiring, right? At any rate, I'm just doing my part to keep the non-essential material flowing. Take care. Vern

I have it on good authority that the killer pandemic uncannily targets double spacers. That lends credence to the conspiracy theorists who believe Covid-19 was lab-created to target older folks and reduce the load on the Social Security and Medicare funds. Almost all double spacers are old and spend 12% of their writing time hitting the space bar.
It makes scientific sense to me that Covid-19 could get fogies who strike the space bar twice after each sentence. More contacts with the biggest typewriter key by the thumb which is the digit seniors use to pick their noses with when not being watched.
If you are still a double spacer, wipe your keyboard with Clorox Wipes before each writing session and wear latex gloves you will have to take off to get a good grip on boogers.

And now we know the rest of the story, lol. Take care.

Also, if anyone has entered more than two stories, you should choose which TWO you want to remain in the contest and use the "Quit Contest" to remove the others from the contest. I just quit one of mine. Otherwise, your last two entries will be the ones judged. Just in case anyone forgot. Take care. Vern

Don't know of any way to delete them all at once, but then I don't know why it's necessary either. This one seems to fit the mood during these semi-shut-in times. I auditioned this for America's Got Talent several years ago and changed the words to fit in with the audition. Of course they warn you not to be original but what the hell, it seemed like a good idea at the time. They had told us the audition would only last ninety seconds so I figured they would stop me before I got too far in, but unfortunately they didn't stop me and I got a bit nervous and forgot the words about halfway through, lol. This is how I rewrote the words:
Before the AGT audition
I couldn’t find a way to hold my head that didn’t hurt
But the chorus I sang for breakfast wasn’t bad
So I did one more for dessert
Then I fumbled in the closet through my clothes
And found my blackest lucky shirt
Then I looked in the mirror and pumped myself
And sauntered down the stairs to meet the day.
I’d agonized the night before
With doubts of which song I’d be pickin’
But I practiced this little one
Strummin’ on an air guitar that I was stickin’
Then I walked into that little room
And I could almost taste the friction
And it reminded me of those nerves I’d lost
Somewhere, somehow along the way
Oh, that AGT audition
I’m praying, Lord, that I’ll get through
‘Cause there’s something ‘bout those judges
That gets a fellow feeling blue.
And there’s nothing short of dying
That’s half as lonesome as the sound
Of listening to your heartbeat
Waiting for the AGT hammer to come down, hmm, hmm, hmm
Take care. Vern

We're like political candidates arguing about the "write" way to do this or that when we are actually all arguing for the same thing which is to get the damn story done and over with and hopefully published. When all is said and done, the author will heed whatever advice suits their vision and the reviewer will give whatever advice they think might help under the circumstances -- it may or may not, but the effort is valuable and hopefully appreciated and not denounced as some evil editor bound to keep their story off the shelves. We can learn and ignore with wisdom or simply ignore the rules and sound advice of others. And that's the truth, phtttt. Take care. Vern
