Topic: Anyone been to a movie theatre lately?

The Dune teaser trailer dropped today and the official trailer comes out tomorrow. I'm dying to see that film (it's the best-selling sci-fi novel of all time), but I'm very hesitant about going (in December). A friend of mine said, where he is, they run at about 25% capacity and people wear masks. I suspect a lot of people lower those masks to eat popcorn, though. Although Canada was very compliant with all the quarantine rules, we've had a number of people take stupid risks since the economy began to reopen, primarily by going to events involving large groups, minimal distancing, and too few masks.

Does anyone still go to the movies?

Re: Anyone been to a movie theatre lately?

Nope.

Re: Anyone been to a movie theatre lately?

Revenge of the Sith (opening night) was my last excursion to the theatres

Re: Anyone been to a movie theatre lately?

I stopped going when I got my first pair of hearing aids. The music was SO LOUD and the dialogue was so soft I could barely hear it. That was over 15 years ago.

Re: Anyone been to a movie theatre lately?

I saw Lord of the Rings and the end of the Skywalker Saga in the theater, and thought Dune would be my last film in a theater. Given the increasing evidence for long-term damage from Covid-19 and the fact that I visit a care home regularly, I'll have to wait for it to come out on DVD. I had forgotten there's a small theater in my building. Close enough.

Re: Anyone been to a movie theatre lately?

Movie theaters were already in trouble before the epidemic. One major chain had declared bankruptcy. I don’t think they’ll recover. Bad for teenagers looking for a reasonable excuse for a date, but probably good for everybody else. Streaming venues are the future. Get yourself a huge TV and create your own theater experience. Don’t have a room large enough? Drive-in theaters are making a comeback!

OR
Get an Oculus Go, a virtual reality machine costing about 300 bucks. Then load a home theater program and you got the big screen experience without leaving your home. The Go is rechargeable, the battery last about 2 and one half hours, or the average time of a movie. The only drawback is if you want to watch it with someone, they have to have the headset, too.

Re: Anyone been to a movie theatre lately?

Let's see...maybe five or six years ago! I don't recall the movie, but I loved those reclining seats with the drink and snack trays. Didn't care much for the twenty-dollar admission. Luckily, my son-in-law paid. After that, we started going to an old-time drive- in.

Re: Anyone been to a movie theatre lately?

A drive-in? Aren't those from the 1900's? ;-)

Re: Anyone been to a movie theatre lately?

They survived here. Making money now, thanks to Covid

Re: Anyone been to a movie theatre lately?

The last movie I saw in the theater was "Book Smart" - really great movie! Not long before Covid. We usually save the theater experience for movies with a lot of special effects and need the large screen and surround sound. But my daughter was in town and wanted to see Book Smart.

I assume this is a remake of Dune from several years ago. That one was a big disappointment compared to the book. Perhaps with the newer technologuy, it will improve. Dune is still my favorite Sci-Fi novel -- the trilogy. Take care. Vern

I have not been to a theater in a while, but I did see Book Smart. A funny, kind of overlooked movie.

It's a huge remake of the 1984 version of Dune (that was a mess), but done in two parts. Probably a budget similar to Star Wars 9. Almost every set was built rather than green-screened. The down side is that coronavirus will probably keep it from making any real money, which means they may never do part two. Like you, I didn't care for the miniseries on the SyFy channel, although their miniseries of Dune Messiah/Children of Dune was pretty good, with James McAvoy as Leto II and Alice Krige (aka the Borg Queen) as Lady Jessica.
