Sol, along these lines I posted a new chapter on my current WIP and even though I confirmed it was published, it never showed up on any lists. I checked and rechecked this to be sure--it wasn't anywhere to be found. I ended up sending private messages to my loyal readers to let them know a new chapter was up. Is this a glitch?

I don't mind the limit because I agree with the intent behind limiting us--but I do think FREE and PREMIUM shouldn't count against our overall number. Just a thought.

Re: your working routine (19 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
For writing time, I beg, borrow and steal from any of my other responsibilities whenever and wherever I can. It sometimes pisses off the various people associated to the activities I'm thieving from, but I found it's generally more productive to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.

Future wishlist addition
Please consider upping the word limit in the IL review box. The summary box at the bottom is best for just that--summarizing the overall reading experience. But because those inline box limitations are so tight, I find myself having to use the bottom box to do all the clarifying of the inline comments--which sort of defeats the IN-LINE purpose, doesn't it?

Re: Portfolio (8 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I did eventually figure out what I was trying to accomplish. However, what I was trying to articulate (badly) is the amount of navigation necessary to accomplish very simple tasks on this site is GIGANTIC (as compared). What was once an at-a-glance scenario for almost any function, is now a fanned-out, multilayer mishmash of parsed information that probably makes a ton of sense on the back end, but not a lot to the end user who has to navigate their way through the coding map in order to accomplish something very simple.
For instance: something as simple as viewing received reviews. The old method was a simple at-a-glance list--I simply clicked on the chapter of my choosing and every review corresponding to that chapter was ready for viewing. Plus, to use those comments for consideration during an edit, I simply brought them up and used them all at-a-glance.
Now, I have to check the regular review list, click a filter to bring up the information (chapter) I'm after because they aren't separated anymore, choose a version filter (if applicable) scan the list, navigate through the arrows because the list view is limited. And repeat the arrowing over until I've seen them all. THEN, I have to jump over to the IL tab....and repeat the entire process ad nauseum. All that navigation just to view reviews on a single chapter.
The uploading content side is no easier. Instead of having everything in one place at-a-glance where we chose the chapter we wanted published-click, click confirmed done.
We now have: Post your writing..next, next to get to the content list, choose the chapter, choose view or edit from the action box to the right--which navigates us to the chosen chapter, scroll down to the bottom of that chapter, click the publish page nav button, click all the appropriate boxes, scroll yet another list to find the chapter you want to publish, click publish, click through the various dialogue boxes and Phew...finally done....without confirmation (you have to pretty much repeat the process, or choose a different process, if you want to confirm that it was indeed successfully published)
That process is admittedly a little more streamlined if you are publishing at the same time as the upload--but not if you choose to upload in batches and piece meal the timing of publishing (like I did).
I know some of this is figuring out your nav map and that it will become easier for us as we get familiar with it...but it sure would be nice to have some of these choices simplified again.

Re: Clarification - No Groups are Mandatory (14 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
This is quite reasonable. If we didn't allow cross-group use of credits, it would thwart any attempt to start a new group. When the first person formed the group, he would soon find no content to review in order to gain points to post.
This assumes that everyone who joins groups is from the old site and it ignores new users who come to the site to set up their own groups or start their own writing spaces. Not everyone wants to be a part of the old TheNextBigWriter. I think that's why the site was built like it was. How man people were there on the old site? Four hundred, maybe five hundred? If that's all the site can attract then it is dead in the water. Recreating the old site on here isn't exactly a recipe for success.
If the only measure of success is a number, maybe. But if you're measuring the success of TNBW (old) it by member longevity, and active participation, I couldn't disagree with that assessment more. Most of us have been members of multiple internet sites. Lord knows I've belonged to many. The ONLY site I've remained loyal to is this one. The main reason is this site wasn't originally designed to be trendy or gimmicky. It was a place where serious writers connected with other serious writers for the purpose of learning and growing. The community in that sense, was unparalleled.
With this redesign, Sol has decided to shoot for some of the flashy trends. Only time will tell if the spirit of this site will persevere the change, or if this will become another in a very long line of writing sites that die from having too much gimmick for gimmick sake.

Re: How did it start? (8 replies, posted in Cop Shop)
I've had several similar kinds of things happen to me growing up--but my love of crime fiction didn't really arrive until I was an adult. I'd run out of Stephen King stuff (and became bored with him eventually), and had exhausted my supply of fantasy--so I turned to my sister who was a sleuth/who done it/crime solving junky. I started by borrowing a few Agatha Christie novels and moved on to contemporary crime fiction from there. I've never looked back in terms of my first choice go-to genre.
I didn't start having the itch to write crime fiction until two years ago. I was messing around with a short story and decided to give it a go. Since then I've written several shorts and now one complete crime fiction novel. I'm having a ball!

Thank you so much for listening Sol. Would you consider adding one teeny thing to the priority to do list? Add a remember me button to the log in and remove whatever it is that is timing it out? Even after having the login each time, if the screen gets minimized for any length of time the system auto logs you out. Thanks again!!

Re: Portfolio (8 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Sol, while you are in the portfolio area making changes, can you look into something else?
I uploaded but didn't publish several chapters of my current wip when this site launched last week--today I went back to publish the first of them and spent twenty minutes navigating through the various portfolio views to try to find them. Once, I did manage to see them on a list, but since I couldn't remember the last of my published chapters--I tried to navigate back to my published novel to check. This of course made me lose the place where I found that drop down menu that showed the unpublished chapters. UGH!!! I spent another 10 minutes trying to find it again before getting frustrated and coming here.
Two main things are very confusing and/or annoying about the portfolio and publishing....
1. Every time you click on a 'Post Your Writing', it takes you to the list of your projects. I find the one I wish to amend and click it. Instead of taking me into a place where I can choose what I want to do--it automatically takes you to the "update main information" page instead.
2. If I choose the EDIT option instead of 'post your writing', it STILL takes me to the same "update main information" page when I choose edit from the list of drop down choices.
3. The update main information page should be an edit option, not a place the navigation defaults to.
I still haven't figured out how to get into those unpublished chapters I uploaded last week.

Re: Question about new points charges for edits (30 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Wouldn't an uncomplicated way to fix this to be award more points overall? If everyone were earning more for the reviews they do, the cost of small tweaks (which is what most of us are talking about) wouldn't matter in the grand scheme. Significant tweaks that ADD to the total word count, should be assessed based on the # of words added, not the total word count (thus not paying for those original words twice). The points awarded for review should always be based on total word count at the time of review. If tomorrows word count is different because the author tweaked, the amount rewarded should appropriately follow suit.
I don't think title tweaks, authors notes, or changes to covers should be assessed any cost. Those are all mechanical necessities not falling under the perusal of the review.
Edited to add: would it be possible to add a box that tells us how much a tweak will cost, and how it will effect the reward amount for review?

Re: Did I do this right? (40 replies, posted in HodgePodge)
I don't disagree with any of the things you list. I think charging us for editing is a CRAZY way to handle what was probably a minor issue to begin with. Of course, now that he said it, everyone would be tempted to exploit the bug if he went back to normal. I think the best way around it is to award us a much larger point pool--then we wouldn't have to be concerned with minor additional costs. But when a review can sometimes pay you as low as 20-50 points, every damn point earned becomes sweat equity. I don't like treadmill workshopping. I've left other popular sites who've adopted that mentality. I hope he reconsiders.
Now if you don't mind--I'm going back to my whiskey drinking in celebration.

There's many wonderful features to be had, but the adjustment curve in order to utilize them will be significant. You aren't alone in your feelings, but maybe with some time you'll feel a little better, or begrudgingly adjust like most of us are trying to do. Hope so. See you around!

Re: Homepage on old site (4 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
They're trying to push us away from having central places to congregate. On one hand, if you are heavily involved in a diligent group, not having stragglers poking their nose in at every turn could be a blessing. But that is about the only benefit I see to forcing us all into groups. Otherwise it's very fragmented and yes, clique-ish. I think this is going to hurt the newer membership in a rather large way as time goes on. We'll see.
And to answer Rebecca's question, the only way I've seen a 'list' of any type of new content is to click into the Premium group and use the navigation arrows to see all the new postings on the list. This of course, is assuming that most people are sending their uploads to be viewed by the Premium group.

No hurry GP--you'll get there when you get there, I'm in no hurry. But, I'm doing a little happy dance around the house today because I have about three more paragraphs to write and the first draft will be officially finished!! Then I'll do a bit of a breather--tons of reviews--and start tackling the rewrite.
So who here has bothered to use points to test how the version system works? I saw it in passing when I posted my one and only new chapter here the other day, but I didn't mess with it. Sol said it was a way to keep all versions together in one project--but no idea how confusing that will be to readers...

Re: Future wishlist (33 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
What njc is bringing up is one of my largest critiques of this site in a general sense--on the user side, everything is TOO BIG. Get as big and fancy as you like on the public side, but it's just wasted space that causes a ton of extra searching/clicking on the user side. Lists and/or much smaller images would be so much more convenient to navigate.
I know some of what we're asking for, or saying is a case of needing to adjust. But tons of extra clicking around, or having pages navigate you somewhere you don't want to be (reviews, messages) has nothing to do with adjustment and everything to do with extra work.

Re: Question about new points charges for edits (30 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I think if we're being charged for small extras like this we should be receiving more points for reviewing. Sadly, this is going to keep people from doing edits online.
