Topic: Portfolio

Sol, I inadvertently posted this in my group, so I'm repeating it here, thinking it would come to your attention in this venue. I saw in my Portfolio list my poems and short story were given a "Yes" under the "Active" column, but my novels were given blanks in that column. So what does "Active" mean?

Re: Portfolio

You have to look at each chapter by going onto the Publish Settings page. Individual chapters might be active or inactive.

BTW - did you know you can resort the order of how your portfolio appears by dragging and dropping the rows of content in your portfolio? Give it a try.

Re: Portfolio

I don't know what that means - active vs inactive. My poems and short story are ancient compared to my novels. None have had a review in years - long before any of the novels had received a review. So I don't get it.

On the old site you could enable or disable content.

Active = enabled
Inactive = Disabled

Inactive means that your content has been published but it is not visible on the site.

Re: Portfolio

Okay, but my novels are listed just as blanks - neither active nor inactive.

Re: Portfolio

Thanks Dags. I'll try again. When I've tried to look at others' in-line reviews I can't find them. But maybe I'll learn.

That's because there are multiple chapters so active/inactive isn't really relevant right now. We'll be making a change next week which will make it clearer.

Re: Portfolio

Sol, while you are in the portfolio area making changes, can you look into something else?

I uploaded but didn't publish several chapters of my current wip when this site launched last week--today I went back to publish the first of them and spent twenty minutes navigating through the various portfolio views to try to find them. Once, I did manage to see them on a list, but since I couldn't remember the last of my published chapters--I tried to navigate back to my published novel to check. This of course made me lose the place where I found that drop down menu that showed the unpublished chapters.  UGH!!!  I spent another 10 minutes trying to find it again before getting frustrated and coming here.

Two main things are very confusing and/or annoying about the portfolio and publishing....
1. Every time you click on a 'Post Your Writing', it takes you to the list of your projects. I find the one I wish to amend and click it. Instead of taking me into a place where I can choose what I want to do--it automatically takes you to the "update main information" page instead.

2. If I choose the EDIT option instead of 'post your writing', it STILL takes me to the same "update main information" page when I choose edit from the list of drop down choices.

3. The update main information page should be an edit option, not a place the navigation defaults to.

I still haven't figured out how to get into those unpublished chapters I uploaded last week.

Did you search for them in your Portfolio list? You didn't see them in your portfolio? You can search by title.

Not sure I  understand. It takes you to the first page in the Edit process. From there you can edit the basic settings or go to the Cover - Content - or Publish tab. What page would you like to be brought to instead? What is you want to edit the cover or the basic settings? Are you saying you want it to default to the content page?

In terms of those uploaded chapters, once you find them, all you need to do is go to the Publish page and publish them, if they are unpublished, or make them active. Did you have trouble doing this?

Re: Portfolio

I did eventually figure out what I was trying to accomplish. However, what I was trying to articulate (badly) is the amount of navigation necessary to accomplish very simple tasks on this site is GIGANTIC (as compared). What was once an at-a-glance scenario for almost any function, is now a fanned-out, multilayer mishmash of parsed information that probably makes a ton of sense on the back end, but not a lot to the end user who has to navigate their way through the coding map in order to accomplish something very simple.

For instance: something as simple as viewing received reviews. The old method was a simple at-a-glance list--I simply clicked on the chapter of my choosing and every review corresponding to that chapter was ready for viewing. Plus, to use those comments for consideration during an edit, I simply brought them up and used them all at-a-glance.

Now, I have to check the regular review list, click a filter to bring up the information (chapter) I'm after because they aren't separated anymore, choose a version filter (if applicable) scan the list, navigate through the arrows because the list view is limited. And repeat the arrowing over until I've seen them all. THEN, I have to jump over to the IL tab....and repeat the entire process ad nauseum. All that navigation just to view reviews on a single chapter.

The uploading content side is no easier. Instead of having everything in one place at-a-glance where we chose the chapter we wanted published-click, click confirmed done.

We now have: Post your writing..next, next to get to the content list, choose the chapter, choose view or edit from the action box to the right--which navigates us to the chosen chapter, scroll down to the bottom of that chapter, click the publish page nav button, click all the appropriate boxes, scroll yet another list to find the chapter you want to publish, click publish, click through the various dialogue boxes and Phew...finally done....without confirmation (you have to pretty much repeat the process, or choose a different process, if you want to confirm that it was indeed successfully published)

That process is admittedly a little more streamlined if you are publishing at the same time as the upload--but not if you choose to upload in batches and piece meal the timing of publishing (like I did).

I know some of this is figuring out your nav map and that it will become easier for us as we get familiar with it...but it sure would be nice to have some of these choices simplified again.
