Content Summary

It’s said that everyone has a novel in them. And judging by what people are saying quite a few are in the process of writing one. Indeed, almost half the people I know are either writing a novel, thinking about writing a novel, or dreaming about writing a novel. So, if you have a good idea, have an itch to write that just won’t go away, and dream maybe of seeing your work on the shelf, here’s some advice on how to start the process and see it through.

I take this advice from watching the thousands of writers passing through TheNextBigWriter and Booksie sites which I have developed.

Keeping Motivated to Write Your Novel

Once you have started to write, maintaining your focus and determination is key. The length of time it takes to write a novel depends on your writing style and the time you have to dedicate. Some writers can finish their novel in three months, other take more than three years.

One of the keys to staying motivated and focused is having a support group of other writers to guide you through the process, provide feedback, and help you through your roadblocks. Join a local writer’s group. Or if you don’t have the time to attend meeting in-person, join an online writing community like TheNextBigWriter. Online communities offer a virtual way to gain the support and motivation you need to keep writing. Members on the site are not only supportive, but they’ll provide you with the feedback you need to tweak your story and get it right.

In addition, every November thousands of writers band together for National Novel Writing Month (NanoWriMo) to write a novel in 30 days. NanoWriMo provides great peer support and if you don’t mind throwing your words down in a 30 day period, might be one way to jump-start the novel writing process.
