Hi all,

I wanted to get your opinion on something. The old site only allowed members to post once they had become premium members. There was no trial. Users were able to get a feel for the site by logging in as a free reviewer. I'm thinking of reverting to that model. Why? Because many new members come to kick the tires, get a bunch of reviews as a trial member, and then take off. I don't feel like this is fair to all of you and the community. Plus, I happen to believe that once people pay money, they are more motivated to put the time and effort into becoming part of the site.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Sol

Hi all,

I launched the new contest for newbies as you requested. Let's see how it goes. It requires three reviews.

Sol

Thanks, Sol. Will you include a requirement on one or both contests for entrants to do some reviewing on the site within the contest window?

I'm debating that one. It would get them more involved, but it also has the potential to turn them off before they're even started. Thoughts?

I'm going to launch two contests this weekend. As Dirk suggested, one of them will be a new member contest. I'm thinking a New Member Short Story Contest. That way, the member doesn't have to write anything new and they can post any short story they have already written.

I also have a contest in mind for all members.

More to come!

Hi MJ, the site wasn't actually down which made this one tricky. A security certificate expired which blocked access to the site. But I am going to put monitoring in place to let me the team know when there is an outage.

Sorry for the inconvenience. I know people are still a bit traumatized from the last real outage.

Following are the bugs extracted from our Bugs & Maintenance Requests thread that ought to be fixed before the next influx of trial users (preferably before the start of the contests):
1. Label changes on the Quickee interface to prevent new users from leaving themselves quickees that then, naturally, never get answered. See bottom of page 1 of the Bugs & Maintenance Requests thread for details/solution.
2. Label changes needed to prevent users from accidentally creating new books when they intended to add a chapter to an existing book; see my post timestamped 2024-05-19 03:24:56 on page 2 of the Bugs & Maintenance thread for details and the suggested solution (ignore the discussion about this problem that followed the post)

Okay, we'll work on these fixes next. We have adjusted the credit ratio, changed the trial period to 2 weeks, and increased the points a new members gets to 20 points. I'm going to launch a new contest on Friday.

Sol

Thanks. I'm going to review these ideas and get back to you shorty I definitely want to launch some contests soon so this is very helpful.

Hi Dirk,

Thanks to you and everyone else for those suggestions. I'm open to keeping TNBW going in its current form but agree there need to be some changes. I can make all of the changes you suggested. They are all relatively easy to implement. I do wonder if 30 days is too long but let's see. I also wonder if 30 points might be too much for the community to handle. Members will be posting but not receiving as much feedback. Especially if the ration is also decreased. The net effect of this will be to suck reviews out of the system. But maybe we need to get more people posting first and then we can dial back the points.

Let's also plan to launch a contest. If anyone has thoughts, let me know. Maybe a short story contest based on an image? Those have always been popular.

Sol

I should also mention there is a popular House called The Review Chain.

https://www.booksie.com/house-review-chain-150

The Founder hasn't done much with it lately but it's attracted over 1,300 members and was quite lively at one point. There's no reason TNBW can't become like that.

Hi all,

I've read through the comments above and have a couple of responses and clarifications.

First, no definitive decision has been made to close TheNextBigWriter. It's something Dirk and I discussed as a possibility if Booksie is a suitable home. I'd prefer to have one platform to maintain and upgrade but I also don't want to destroy what has been built here. So, there is no imminent plan to shut this down. That being said, we probably won't do much development on this site moving forward as Booksie is the more modern platform. But that doesn't preclude us from running contests and continuing to market and promote the site. I leave this decision to the community.

In terms of Booksie, in public Houses, the content is publicly displayed on the Internet. In private Houses, the content is only shared with that House, similar to how it is kept private on TNBW. So, content posted to the TheNextBigWriter House on Booksie cannot be accessed by bots or others unless they are a member of the group. Try accessing Terry's Booksie post if you are not logged into Booksie.

There are talented writers on Booksie and not just beginners. If you look at the contest winners, you'll read some high quality work.

If we were to move TNBW over, I'd make the House much more visible and help to promote it across the site. I also have no problem making it for more advanced writers. There are already plenty of beginner writer Houses.

Those are a few clarifications and thoughts.

Hi Sol,
I'm having trouble signing in using the link you provided. The pop-up message states, "invalid email or password." When I try to join, it states, "Email and pen name already exist." The pen name is S.L. Garber-Ortiz. Perhaps you can override it on your end.

Thanks.

It looks like you created an account but it wasn't active. I have activated it and you should be able to login with our email and password. Then, you should be able to join the group. Let me know if you still have problems or need your password reset.

Sol

Hi all,

I wanted to remind members that TNBW authors also receive free Booksie membership valued at $69.95 per year. To help members get the most of Booksie, I've also created a TNBW group on the site. If you are interested, register with Booksie and let me know your pen name. I'll upgrade your account.

Booksie is also running a short story contest which members of TNBW might be interested in joining. Check it out.

I'll also take care of the cookie problems.

Hmm. Okay, thanks for letting me know. I'll have it taken care of along with the Quickee fix.

On it.

Good question. To be in Kindle Unlimited, I think you need to be in Kindle Select.

To be included in Kindle Unlimited (KU), you must meet the KDP Select requirements and enroll your Kindle eBook in KDP Select. If you don’t want your Kindle eBook in Kindle Unlimited (KU), you have the option to remove it from KDP Select.

This is what Kindle Select says:

Your Kindle eBook must also be exclusive to the Kindle Store for the KDP Select enrollment period.

So, yes, you'd have to remove your book from Kindle Select and Kindle Unlimited. I think each author has to decide how much benefit they are getting from these programs and make a decision based on that.

As an exclusive to TheNextBigWriter, I wanted the site's members to be the first to gain access to videos about Booksie Limited Editions (BLEs). No one else has this link, not even Booksie members. We hope to launch on Thursday. If you decide to publish a BLE, let me know and I'll feature it.

Thanks for pointing this out.

Sol

Good idea on Quickees. We'll make that change. Thanks.

Hi all,

I apologize for not being as present as I would like over the past few weeks. Some spam has collected and I spent some time today clearing it from the site.

Much of my time has been taken up over the last couple of months with a new project that I think will help writers on TheNextBigWriter. Very shortly, Booksie (the sister site to TheNextBigWriter) will be releasing a new feature that will significantly improve how writers publish digital books and readers buy them. The new feature allows writers to publish Limited Editions of their work, choosing the quantity they want to release and the price. This is similar to a limited edition print. Limited Editions can't be copied and provide ownership to the purchaser, just like a buyer has ownership over a physical book. For contrast, when someone purchases a book on Amazon, they aren't really buying the book, they are receiving a license to read it. A book "owner" on Amazon can't re-sell the book, transfer it, or bequeath it to their heirs. All of this can be done with a Limited Edition. And it's not just books we are creating as LEs. Short stories, poems, any kind of written content can quality.

Most TheNextBigWriter members quality for a free Booksie Premium subscription so you are all eligible to try out Limited Editions. We plan to roll the platform out in the next week so if you are interested, let me know either via PM or by messaging below. I plan to give TheNextBigWriter members extra exposure as we ramp up our promotion of the platform via a PR campaign and advertising. This site has so much talent!

One of the original goals of Booksie was to serve as a marketing platform for TheNextBigWriter authors. Writing a book is only half the battle. I believe Limited Editions has the potential to help TNBW authors promote and monetize their writing.

Once this launch happens, I plan to circle back and make some long awaited upgrades to TheNextBigWriter to continue making it a great place for authors to develop their writing.

Best,
Sol

Thanks all. I'll purge all of them.

Bill, sending good thoughts and hopes for a speedy recovery.

Will take care of it. Thanks,

Thanks!

All set. It was a bit tricky going through the list and deleting the right groups and being careful not to delete ones we wanted to keep. Hopefully, it looks okay now. Let me know.

Thanks! I'll begin purging.

Another item: Sol, have you had a chance to look at the functioning of spellchecking on various important TNBW text fields? I no longer recall which ones had/didn't have spellchecking, but there definitely was more of it before the crash. I especially find myself looking up plenty of words when posting to the forum.

EDIT: Found the problem. My browser (Chrome) is able to spellcheck words in at least some TNBW text fields (e.g., forum posts) but the feature was off. Not sure how that happened. But that seems to be the fix.

EDIT 2: Did a little more testing. Chrome's spellchecking seems to work on ALL major TNBW text fields except the closing comment to an inline review and the closing comment when responding to that review.

The site never had spell-check. I think it was all your browser. Nothing should have changed on the site pre and post crash to have changed the way the fields interact with the spell check. Maybe something changes on the browser side? I'll do a quick search and see if there is something we need to add.
