The musicians were late. The session they played in a different studio ran into overtime. Rob was relieved. They made it to the studio at ten minutes after one, and then Rob added another ten minutes to that in the car with Lucy.

When Rob entered the building, Brown didn’t seem surprised that he was late.  It was when Lucy entered behind Rob that the surprise showed plainly on his face.

“And what have we here?” he asked, his face brightening.

“Mr...er...Larry, I want you to meet Lucy Greene. Luce, this is Larry Brown, my owner.”

Brown laughed heartily. “That’s as good a title as any, I guess.” He grasped Lucy’s hand in his. “It’s nice to meet you, Lucy. And how do you know our Rob?”

Before Lucy could answer with a remark that would embarrass him, Rob spoke up quickly. “Lucy’s my girlfriend, Larry. I plan on marrying this girl.”

Brown’s eyes narrowed for a brief second. Rob could have sworn that anger had flashed across his face, but he couldn’t be sure. He wondered if he was just paranoid again.

“Marriage, hm? Now that’s a big step.” Brown said, then turned quickly toward the door when it opened, and the studio musicians poured into the room.

Brown settled Rob inside a soundproof glass cubicle. He explained how to use the microphone and the headphones, the latter he would use to listen to the musicians. Once the musicians put down the tracks, they would be excused (since they got paid by the hour) and Rob would use the headphones to record the vocals. At that point.

Rob was nervous, his palms damp with sweat.

He needed to fight the anxiety attack that was trying to gain on him.

His eyes searched the room. They found Lucy in the control booth next to Brown and the engineer. She was smiling, and she blew him a kiss. The kiss was just what he needed to stop his jitters, so he placed the earphones on his head, closed his eyes, and waited for the engineer to queue the music.

When the music for the first ballad he ever wrote came through his headphones, he let it take him to where he needed to go.

Rob managed to cut the first song without any problems, or so he thought. He heard the click of the control booth microphone in his ears, and Brown’s voice came through.

“You’re rushing it, Rob. I know you’re nervous, but you need to slow it down just a bit. If you have a valium, take it.”

“I don’t have any,” Rob’s face flamed with embarrassment at Brown’s words. He was so glad the musicians left earlier.

Brown clicked off the microphone, and the door to the control booth opened. He stepped out. He had a hand in his pocket. Stepping up to Rob, Brown pulled out a small bottle and opened it. He shook a little blue pill out onto his palm and handed it to Rob. “Take this,” he said. “It will help you to relax.”

“I don’t take drugs, Mr.---Larry,” Rob confessed. “The strongest thing I’ve ever taken was Tylenol, and that was to get rid of a hangover.”

Brown grasped Rob’s hand and put the pill in it. “You might want to consider giving up the booze. It will age you. Take this. It’s not an illegal drug. It’s a prescription medication. I take it all the time. This business is hard on the nerves.”

Rob inhaled sharply and popped the pill into his mouth. He opened the cap on the water bottle he kept on hand and took a long drink.

“There you go,” Brown patted him on the back. “That will help. We’ll get you to a doctor to get your prescription soon. Now, let’s get back to work.”

“Thanks, Larry,” Rob said. “You’re a big help.”

Brown nodded. “You’re new at this, Rob. And you’re very talented. I would hate to see you fail.” He turned back toward the control booth, then turned back to Rob. “By the way, I need you to come by the office around ten tomorrow morning. Can you make it?”

“Sure.”

“And come alone, please, Rob.”

Rob felt the rock in his stomach churn.

Rob was quiet on the drive back to his apartment.

When Lucy pulled up to the curb and killed the engine, her eyes studied him. “Anything wrong?” she asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Rob?” she raised her voice a notch.

Rob blinked his eyes several times as if coming out of a trance. “What?” he turned his eyes to look at her.

“I asked you if anything was wrong.”

With one hand, Rob massaged the back of his neck. It was rigid with tension. “Nah,” he shook his head. “I think the Valium is wearing off, is all.”

“Do you think you should be taking those?” she asked.

He felt the anger start at his spine and crawl up his neck. Stop it, Lucy, stop with the mother act.  “I only took the one, Luce. It’s all good.”

“Want me to come up?”

He thought about it for a moment. He didn’t, but he did. He didn’t because his nerves were frazzled, even with the Valium. He did because, well, just because.

“Sure,” he said with a smile. “I would like that.”

She flashed a quick smile as she opened the door of the Toyota and stepped out. “Are you hungry, Rob? I could make us some dinner. Or we could order a pizza or something.”

“Yea, that sounds good.” Rob wasn't hungry. He didn’t want a pizza. What he wanted was a tall Jack and Coke and some awesome sex. He was pretty sure that Lucy would oblige.

The following morning, the alarm rang at eight o’clock. Rob reached to find it and ended up shoving it off the nightstand. He swore silently to himself as he slid naked off the bed and, getting it, shut it off.

“Oh my God,” Lucy’s voice came from the other side of the bed. “What the fuck is that noise?”

“Sorry, Luce.” Rob reversed his eel position until he was back on the bed. “It was the alarm.”

“Why did you set the alarm for Christ's sake?” she grumbled. “I’m still tired after last night.”

Rob laughed. “I’ll just bet you are. You don’t have to get up. But I have to be at Brown’s office by ten.”

“I’m not making you breakfast.” Her voice came through the blanket over her head. “And I’m not going with you.”

“You don’t have to. I already told you that last night.”

“Oh, that’s right. Good, see you later.”

Rob kissed the top of her head. “See you later.”

He flipped on the hot water in the shower then turned to the sink to shave, smiling at his reflection as he thought back to the night before.

When they got home from the studio, he was dreading the conversation he needed to have with Lucy. He was afraid he started something he shouldn’t have by inviting her into his recording session. He had the impression Brown didn’t want her there. But there was more to it than that. The look on Brown’s face told Rob he was going to get a tongue lashing.

The smile left his face. The rock in his stomach rumbled. That damnable feeling of dread started to cover him. He shook the feeling by thinking about the night before, about the pizza they didn’t have, and about the incredible sex they did.

As soon as Rob opened the door to his apartment, he turned and swooped Lucy up in his arms. Using one foot, he kicked the door shut then carried her to the bedroom. After flopping her down on the bed, he crawled up her body, kissing her greedily. His hands searched for the buttons on her blouse. He quickly undid them, shoving the blouse down her arms.

“I guess pizza is out of the question,” she giggled.

Rob unbuttoned her skirt and removed it, tossing it aside. “Yes, it is." Standing, he tore off his shirt and slid his jeans down his legs. “I’m so hungry, Lucy,” he said softly. “Hungry for you.”

She held out her arms. “Make love to me, Rob. Be my lover.”

His eyes sought hers in the dimness of the room. “I am your lover.” His lips left hers and snaked a trail down her neck and to her breasts. He found the snap of her bra, and he unhooked it. “Perfect,” he said softly. “Just perfect.” He took an erect nipple in his mouth, sucking gently.

Lucy groaned. “Harder,” she cried. “Suck them harder.”

He used his teeth to nibble and bite.

She cried out in delight. “Yes, yes, that’s it!.”

“Tell me what you want, Lucy, my love,” Rob breathed in her ear.

“I want…” she panted heavily.

“Tell me,” he urged. “I have to know. I have to please you.”

“I want it all.”

Rob sucked in his breath. Did she want it all? Did he dare? He answered that question by flipping her onto her stomach.

She didn’t fight him.

His tongue traveled the length of her spine.

She was covered in a subtle sheen of sweat. She tasted salty. He loved smelling her when she was like this. She gave off an odor of musk, salt, and something else he couldn’t quite figure out. But it was enough to drive him mad.

He wet his fingers with his mouth then slid them up her fanny.

“No, Rob!” she cried out.

“Yes, baby. You want it all, and I want you to have it.”

“I don’t know if I can!”

He felt her body stiffen in fear. Stopping his movements, he slid back up her body and put his mouth close to her ear. “You can. You have to relax. I love you, my Lucy, my lover, and I want it all, too.”

She weakened at his words. He kissed her and ran his hands slowly up and down her body. “Such a beautiful body. I want to devour you. I want you to be all mine.”

“I am,” she whimpered.

“Then I’m going to take all of you.”

As gently as he could, Rob slid his cock up her ass. She tightened up. A small scream escaped her lips. He slid in and out, moving as slowly as he could. “Am I hurting you?"

“Yes,” she cried at first. Then her body went limp, and she whispered, “No."

“Do you like it?”

“Yes.”

“I like it, too. But I don’t want to hurt you.” He slid his cock out of her and turned her onto her back.

Her eyes were shiny and moist. “I’ve never done that before.”

“Me, either,” he confessed. “But, baby, I have to have it all from you.”

“I love you, Rob.” She started to cry and covered her face with her hands. “I don’t know what I’m doing anymore.”

Rocking her gently, stroking her hair, Rob let her cry. “I know, Lucy,” he said. “But at least we’ll do it together.”
