Hey, Dirk?
Did I thank you for all your reviews? I've been running behind in this time of the pandemic, kinda lost track after losing my damned mojo. If so, will you let me know? Also, there's a 14-point jackpot waiting for you, comprising lots of previously posted but edited chapters in addition to a bit of new material. It's chapter 2 of the 'enhanced' version.
Best,
Ray

Just to be sure, I'm also gonna ask my wife. :o) I wouldn't place a more detailed description of the buildings (tower and complex) too far away from this chapter in the manuscript, Charles.

I am very sorry for not thanking my readers (you know who you are) for the fine reviews you have left in a more timely manner. Since 'recovering' from my Covid infection, I have been a wreck, having a hard time both physically and mentally. (There are those who say the latter is par for the course.) The oxygen levels in my blood regularly drop way below 90, forcing me to return to the hospital. An even greater worry is that I have not developed antibodies, although my regular tests all come back negative. I urge y'all to be very, very careful.

Always store a copy (or the original manuscript) on a Google or Microsoft's OneDrive. Assuming the cloud never crashes, you're always good to go, no matter what happens to your own equipment. In addition, but that depends on how one prefers to write, I keep copies of all my handwritten materials: notes, links, as well as the manuscript itself.
Good luck reconstructing it all.

Yeah, I do mostly regular reviews, but when I'm lazy or tired... Still, I can't believe all those repeats escaped my attention. I do have a hard time concentrating. Dunno if it's the drugs or breathing problems that still linger. On the Antichrist: does the cardinal identify the dark figure (sorry) as such? Perhaps that's a better way to go rather than just state that? 'Cos you're in the cardinal's POV... I'll have to check it--tomorrow. Exhausted. Stay safe!

On the other hand, my 'Find on Page' feature only found 2 repeats, which is still unacceptable, but it's not a cesspool of repeats. Feel a little better now. I hate writing reviews that appear to be posted solely as a means of gathering points.
A tall dark figure surrounded by swirling fog stood a few meters away. Light barely penetrated to his face or clothes, as if he were shrouded in deep shadows where none existed. He wore his long coat’s collar turned up, his eyes glowed fiery red, and he stank of burned-out ruins.
Vitale’s eyes went wide and he struggled to stand. “Who … who are you?”
The dark figure smiled playfully, the outline of his lips barely visible. “Mother Teresa.”
Vitale frowned and waited.
The dark figure shrugged.

Jesus. Are there really that much repeats of 'dark figure' in the post? I'm usually very keen on avoiding repeats...

Good morning!
There are plenty of crime novels featuring extraordinary situations exploited by criminals: A serial murderer during, and directly after, the bombing of Dresden, The Last Detective hunting a murderer during the last weeks before a massive comet hits earth. I'd say go for it: show the worst and best people during the current pandemic.
Stay safe! This virus is nothing to fool around with.

Hey!
I'll take you up on that.
I, too, was ready to submit to agents, until Covid-19 set me back more than a month. After having made some changes here and there, I could use an extra pair of eyes before I get ready again.
Here's a link to my novel The Great Divide. Lots of historical fiction in there. I'll start reviewing your manuscript today.

With this post I first wish to thank everybody for their well-wishes. Unfortunately, I had to do a Boris Johnson: a second hospital stay, way longer and intense than the first time around, among other things involving 3 days of extra-oxygen therapy. It just about broke my mojo in two. In truth? I have nothing left, feel like I aged 10 years. Finally discharged, free of Covid-19, oxygen in blood at 91 (the low end of acceptable), maybe immune (but who really knows), I’m left with bad shakes as a reminder how dangerous this virus really is. My advice: wear a mask, and don’t dismiss it as just another kind of common flu. It is not. Don’t liberate your state. Don’t get a tattoo in Georgia. Don’t play craps in Vegas. Oh, wait! Total hospital bill for 19 days: $ 173,215, and with an annual deduction of $2,500 and co-pay at 10%, I’m very much looking forward to declare bankruptcy. That'll go nicely with the prescribed bedrest.
I hope to return to commenting on the manuscripts I’ve been closely following as soon as I can.

After having been hospitalized for 5 days with what was first (and wrongly) diagnosed as pneumonia, I urge you to pay attention to what you're doing. Do not believe assholes like Trump and Johnson: Covid-19 is nothing like the common flu, but, like the flu, it may kill you, only sooner. Also: get tested. I couldn't, but after the dung hit the fan, I finally ended up in an ambulance and the ER. And the damnest thing: I have no idea where I picked it up.

The Left Behind series makes Catholics shudder. It's written from a premillennial dispensationalist POV. Catholics hate it because it confuses people (myself included initially) into thinking that that POV is how the world will end. That's one of the reasons I went with a Catholic story.
I wasn't referring to religion, Dirk, but rather the ruins left by the apocalypse.

Careful here. That's been done quite nicely in the Left Behind series, which, I must admit, I consider sci-fi.

The Star Wars stuff came from the first three films.
Doesn't matter. Still didn't like it. :o)
I really don't understand the big deal about the bus. It's a minute part of the overall atmosphere of the piece: a day of interesting sightseeing for a group of orphans. A breather. Not hard to 'invest' in. But I'll stay out of it. I know nothing.

Re: As Darkness Gathers (the Connor series) - Dirk B. (1,438 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
I got scene 4.1 down to 9.25 pages. I may be able to trim a little more if I lose the buses. I'm going to wait for more feedback before deciding what else to chop. The scene with Damiano blessing the Pope was meant to lead to Damiano receiving a small gold(en) cross to wear, similar to the one Inspector De Rosa wears. Unfortunately, that would easily require another half page. On the other hand, if I yank out all of the stuff relating to the Pope, I'd hit my page count but would lose the Yoda joke and Death Star comparison, which add some fun to a Catholic-heavy scene.
Waiting for more feedback is a dangerous proposition here, Dirk. Place is like a graveyard. Wonder how many active people there are here. I mean people who actually write, not those who rest on their mostly unpublished laurels and use this site like Facebook. Also, why lose the buses? You gotta show the reader how they get to where they're going, no? Why do you care if the scene covers 9 1/4 pages? Nobody's interested in a page count. For what it's worth: I didn't like the Star Wars stuff. I have nothing against Star Wars, but anything that came after the first 3 films sucks. :o)

Re: As Darkness Gathers (the Connor series) - Dirk B. (1,438 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
The phrase "One, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church" appears in the Nicene Creed and, in part, in the Apostles' Creed ("the holy catholic church", sanctam Ecclesiam catholicam. The phrase is intended to set forth the four marks, or identifying signs, of the Christian Church—unity, holiness, universality, and apostolicity—and is based on the premise that all true Christians form a single united group founded by the apostles.
Don't wanna get in a prolonged discussion about it, but that's what Constantine agreed to. I'm not religious, but rather look at it from a historical perspective. :o)
Also, in some interpretations, 'church' is believed to mean 'congregation.'

The chapter from hell is up. The orphans tour the Vatican. Only the tour of St. Peter's Square and St. Peter's Basilica are shown since Romano and Connor leave the tour before it's over. Technically, Connor's already seen the Sistine Chapel, but I'll probably have him revisit it in the future as a place he goes to think.
Dirk, I don't mean to be a dick about it, but how 'bout some reciprocatin' (and I don't mean as a part of a saw)? We're all here to produce the best possible, and we can all use a little help.
By the way, I sneaked a quick peek, and I have to say I disagree with you on the subject of Jesus' founding of the Christian church. Instead, I'd say it was based *upon* his teachings, and the leadership began with the apostles.

No Asimov or Arthur C. Clarke or Frederick Pohl or Ray Bradbury?
And Frank Herbert's Dune is probably older than you are. Naturally, I have a signed first edition. :P
Asimov was once asked what he'd do if he was told he had only one year to live. His answer: writer faster! :-)
Read all these guys already, Dirk. If only Dune could be older. :o)

Got into some 'ancient' sci-fi lately: short stories and novels by the likes of Cliff Simak, Robert Sheckley, John Brunner, Poul Anderson, Randall Garrett, (early) Robert Silberberg, Harry Harrison, Lester del Rey. Hard to beat. Anyone else here enjoys this kind of stuff?
