Does anyone know of a way to export all of their work from this site, including all reviews received? I'd like to have another copy held somewhere else, just in case...

Hi Sol,

Something strange has happened to my profile this morning. When I click on View Public Profile, the link brings me to my profile but the postings it displays under 'Featured by Author' aren't my postings. 'When the Road Darkens' by Brian Lancaster and 'Redemption, Junior Walker & me', which I can't view appear instead.

When I click on my portfolio, I see all of my own work (what a relief - I thought it was all gone!)

I've saved a screenshot if you need to see it but can't figure out how to share it here.

Wow, that’s brilliant - such an achievement to be proud of! Congratulations!!

I never expected to get so much critique over posting about the availability of a free review from a professional editor. These forums are a fascinating mix of people - some so cranky and argumentative they must wait around for someone to post anything they can latch onto and argue over.  A lot of the time, I avoid reading the forums if I see certain names popping up.

A few months ago someone else on this site posted a very whiny, negative post about how the forums are dead and boring. I then posted a link to a video about writing which inspired me and she then knocked it down as 'middle school level' information - if people want a forum they can interact in, maybe they should change how they interact!

However, I have to say I disagree with you, Jube. I would much rather go to Richard Bradburn for professional editing. There are books listed on his testimonials page. I think it would be far more useful to have his experience editing my work than someone like Ann Everrett who may have published some books but has never edited (I think) professionally for someone else before. I'm not looking for an editor right now, but if I was, he would be near the top of my list. I read through a lot of his Opening Lines analyses and found he makes well-thought out arguments about what works and what doesnt.

However, I didn't recommend his as an editor to anyone. I just suggested that people may want to get his free, professional opinion. After all - we're all paying to receive unprofessional feedback from each other on this site - very few of us are published and have more than a couple of hours to dedicate to writing, while it is his full time job so he will have much more experience and knowledge about the industry.

Finally - I too am struggling to get time for tNBW too (although I somehow managed to find time to write this this morning...) but hope it will be easier now that winter is almost here and outdoor activities will become less appealing.

Yes, and thank you for that, but is there any objective standard by which one can judge his opinions having any value?

Charles, I pay fees to tNBW each month to receive reviews from other writers who are just like me - people who enjoy writing, who manage to squeeze an hour or two of writing and reviewing into their busy week, and who are not professional/published writers. Then, I found out that I could submit my work to The Opening Lines and receive a free review from a person who is dedicated full-time to writing and editing. I didn't blindly accept and implement his feedback, but valued it, just like I value the opinions of my fellow writers on tNBW. To me, any feedback is helpful. I hope this answers your question.

Glad to hear it, Debbie. Hope it helps you too!

Hi everyone,

Is anyone else struggling with the opening lines of their novel? Or putting off querying agents or self-publishing because they're just not sure they've got the first chapter right yet?

I recently got a free review on my first 1k words from a professional editor which was extremely helpful. He critically analyses your 1st chapter and comments from an agent's perspective on the overall storyline, adds some copy-edits, and finally gives it a grade of gold/silver/rejected/etc.

I'm sharing this because I found it really useful and hope some of you find it useful too. Here's his website; http://theopeninglines.com

For me, the reason I would want to attempt querying agents before attempting to self-publish is that ideally, they would do a lot of the work for you - they have the expertise in an area that i don't. I don't have enough free time as it is for writing so I don't want to waste that time learning the skills involved in being a self-publisher.

that's amazing that someone is earning 1k with their books but I imagine the average person is making a loss with self-publishing when you consider the costs included in doing it like getting editing, cover art, etc.

I've given myself the deadline of 31/12/2018 to finish editing Being Fifteen. After that, the only work i'm allowed to do with it is sending query letters to agents. after no response by August, 2019, I'll start to think about self-publishing but if I do it, I want to do it properly so will really invest time in learning the necessary skills.

If he's all good, could his flaw be that he tries to please everyone? By trying to appear as everyone's version of a 'good guy', could he hurt others inadvertently until he figures out what 'good' means to himself? Eg he wants to help a struggling village so performs a miracle and provides them with lots of food, and only realises afterwards he put the farmers and fishermen out of business? By the end of the story hell have figured out that being all good doesn't mean making everyone happy.

I tried finding an area specifically for sharing writing resources and inspiration but only found individual threads so here's another one.

I just found, watched, and loved this YouTube video and wanted to share it with tnbw community. I hope some of you find it as exciting and inspiring as I did.

Hi Everyone,

I finally posted the final chapter of 'The Best Laid Plans'! Finally!! You guys know that writing the second half was a huge struggle because I didn't like the direction of the story anymore, but I took the Sheriff's advice and just slogged on with the initial story! So, what next? I dunno! Keep editing and improving, I guess! Thanks to you all who provided support & thanks Rhiannon for being the first to finish reviewing it! smile

To Jubes and Suin's point, cheating on your reviews, will only cheat yourself in the end.

On this point - what are people doing when they receive these reviews? I always feel compelled to reciprocate, but when I receive thirteen of these types of reviews in a row, it seems like a huge amount of effort to respond to them! Do people reciprocate? Do you put in your usual effort of an hour per review? Or do a superficial review similar to what youreceived? I'd be tempted to do the latter due to time constraints...but feel guilty for giving a poor review!

Well you get what you give on this site, right? So if he's giving superficial reviews, he's probably not getting in-depth reviews in response!

Congratulations - looks great on Amazon!

Congratulations! Putting them together was a huge amount of work, so you must be really proud to see the books for sale!

Christine, you just need to make them inactive. They won't appear for anyone else to view, but you'll still be able to access the content & reviews.

You know the way you can select the little green 'Check as Applied Feedback' button on each chapter after applying feedback? Does anyone know if there's a way to filter for unapplied feedback in your overall list of reviews received? Or does anyone have a hack for easily showing what chapters have feedback that hasn't been applied?

Great! It is so much easier to review shorter chapters, even if they don't end at the natural chapter's end!
Although it was nice to see my points jump by more than five after reviewing that one! smile

Alicia's supposed to be a well-read kid, which is why her diary entries should come across as more mature. Reading authors like Austen, Wilde, and Plath at that age would do that. I mostly ignore advice on wording when it comes to her diaries in reviews so that they maintain her authentic voice.
I had to google the Platonic/platonic thing first smile

Welcome back Gacela & welcome to the group C.E.!
Sorry to hear you've been through another bad relationship - believe me, there are tons of good guys out there. They may not come across as so charming or exciting as the bad guys at first, but the good guys are wonderful too!

Hello Romance Writers!

I've finished posting all chapters of my novel Surviving Fifteen here, and after recieving many reviews, have edited every chapter so it's close to completed. I'd love feedback on plot, character development and setting (I have no need for punctuation/grammatical reviews at this time) now that I'm in final draft.

Is there anyone out there in a similar situation and would like to review for review quickly? (eg. multiple reviews per week with a focus on sticking with it until the end). Obviously, I would do the same for you!

Thanks,
Suin

Hi CJ, why don't you ask Sol for admin rights so that you can add the writer to the group? Since Gacela hasn't been been around for a few months I'm sure she wouldn't mind and wouldn't want the group to become stagnant. You can always give her back the rights once she returns. I'm more than happy to see new members join this group of they have something to offer and if you're vouching for her, I'm sure she's good!

The site has changed lately. The first reviews I received on this site were so warm and encouraging even though I had no idea how to use punctuation, POV, grammar, etc. but lately, I've noticed really harsh and discouraging reviews given to new people including words like 'lame' and 'unreadable'. Thank goodness for Ann and Marilyn and some others who always give welcoming reviews. Where has the supportive, encouraging community gone?

I'm excited to see your books available to buy! Looks like it'll be a busy year!
CJ, the sooner you publish Dawn of the Tiger, the sooner I can read it and stop getting confused by things in book 2 that were already explain in book 1 smile
