Topic: How to write a story

I tried finding an area specifically for sharing writing resources and inspiration but only found individual threads so here's another one.

I just found, watched, and loved this YouTube video and wanted to share it with tnbw community. I hope some of you find it as exciting and inspiring as I did.

Re: How to write a story

Thanks for sharing, Suin.  But in writing a story, I just follow Hemingway's advice.  I start at the beginning and stop when the story's over.

Re: How to write a story

They teach this in third grade: Every story must have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Period.

That's why simply putting your character into a series of 'adventures,' no matter how exciting each is, is not telling a story. The reader must be able to identify what the main character is trying to accomplish (beginning), what he/she goes through in trying to accomplish it (here's where your 'adventures' go), and how things turn out (end), whether he/she is successful or not.

If you're missing any one of those parts, it's not a story.

Re: How to write a story

j p, tell that to James Joyce.  lol  Actually, I agree, although it doesn't have to be what the MC is trying to accomplish, something could be done to him or her. I'm pretty classical in my approach to plotting--protagonist<----->nemesis---->Rising Action----->falling action----->End brought about by protagonist's action.

Re: How to write a story

Rachel--You know there's always one or two!

If something is being done to your MC, then what he's trying to accomplish is survival, or possibly victory, right?

You took me from third grade to college level in two sentences. Have a heart--go easy on me!

Actually, his stories were completed when the bartender said last call.
