Let me ask you this, have you received any reviews from free members?

Would TNBW Free still be non-points group?

No, it would no longer be a free points group. Under this scenario once you pay the points for your work you can post it to any group you want. My impression is that free members are coming onto the site, posting their writing, and for the most part not reciprocating any feedback they get. I could be wrong and if others have a different experience, please let me know.

This is what I mean by letting things work themselves out.  After a few months of the Free members' inactivity, the free group will have demonstrated itself to be a useless appendage, and it will fall off, or be eliminated.

After watching the site since its launch, listening to all of you, and thinking about how new members are coming aboard, we are contemplating the following changes to the point system:

1. Updating the point system so that once you post to one group, you can post to all point groups. No more double paying.

2. Turning most groups, especially TheNextBigWriter Free into a point group and requiring that new members review before they post. We will still maintain the option for users to create non-point groups but the major groups run by the site will require points.

3. Opening the point system up to free members also with one caveat. Free members will have to accumulate 50% more points than Premium members to post the same content. Free members can participate but they have to pay more in time.

I welcome any thoughts you have on these changes.

Thanks,
Sol

Hi, Sol—
I keep imagining you scurrying around, trying to fix everything for everyone.  It’s impossible.  Sit back, chill out, have a margarita!  I’ll give you my thoughts while you relax.
1.    GOOD IDEA.  I like the idea of only paying once.  I can’t afford the hundreds it costs to repost in another group.  The purpose of posting in a group is so like-minded people can critique each other’s work.
2.     BAD IDEA.  And here’s why: when I joined, I had no idea how to give a review.  If I had tried, it would have been a waste of time for me and any author whose works I reviewed.  I posted my first story, and waited to hear what people said.  Those first points are not only a kindness, they’re a teaching tool for newbies.
3.    BAD IDEA.  Why complicate further something that is already a can of worms, nest of snakes, etc.?  Is everybody so immature they can’t wait to see how things work themselves out?  Let people learn to live with things before making any more changes.  We’ve only been at the new site two months.  Simplify, simplify!
You asked for my thoughts.  Have another drink—I’m sure there’s more to come.
JP

I like all the discussion going on!
So, let me get this straight:
ec.7.02  You are responsible for someone else’s criminal act if:
a.
(1)    You committed a crime and took the kids or a mentally handicapped individual along on the job
(2)    You talked somebody else into doing the job for you
(3)    You knew what they had in mind, you should have stopped them from pulling the job, and you didn’t even try

b.    You planned to rob a bank, one of your gang killed the guard, so now you’re all guilty of murder
Is that right, Allen?
Now, let me think of a book or movie that illustrates each point.  Anybody else?  Do you disagree?

Oh! Wait--what about conspiracy?

I was looking at submission guidelines for several periodicals, and came across this phrase: "We do not consider previously published work, which includes work published on any website."  Does "any website" include workshop sites like TNBW?  Does the fact that the site calls a work "published" make it so?

Why are these terms always listed like this?  What’s the difference?  Are aiding and abetting two different charges, with two different penalties?  What’s an accessory?  And what about conspiracy?  Are all these terms left to legal interpretation?  I looked these up online, and the explanations were confusing.  Help!

Hey, Jack--When are you going to post the answers?  I tried, but I couldn't answer these questions.  I don't see that many movies and besides, my memory's shot--help!  JP

Okay, I promise I'll try and step it down a little for the next time.  Or somebody else could get one ready for the next time.  I've been trying to post a quiz every two weeks or so (there's no schedule) and in between the quizzes, a discussion topic.  This week's topic is where to publish your crime stories.  The link above lists A LOT, and they revise the list periodically.  If you've tried any of them, it would be interesting for the rest of us to know about it.  JP

Nope--answers haven't been posted--at least a week, to let everybody have a chance with them.  You can post yours, if you like, and I'll use them to fill in the chart in the QUIZ thread.  Nobody got the whole answers to anything, yet--seems like a lot of folks were getting ready for publication.  JP

If you want your stories noticed, this is a good place to start.  The Mystery Writers of America post a list of approved publishers for crime/mystery writers.  The stories/books published by those publishers could be submitted for the Edgar award, among others.  Check it out.  JP

IS ANYBODY HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE SWITCH?
I did, and Sol very kindly helped me get it sorted out.
If anything bad happened to stuff you had already posted to Cop Shop before the switch, or if any other posting problem develops, let him know.
This will most likely be a temporary change, until the multiple-post feature is activated site-wide in a few weeks.

ALL FEEDBACK IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!  jp

I want to throw out a couple of things for the members to chew on.

First - we're a relatively small group, but we've declared our interest in a common theme. Idealistically I would like to think we would make work from our own group a primary reading focus, at least for the stories that fall in our preferred genres. I'm guilty of not doing it, and I know for sure I haven't been the recipient. Maybe that's because the story is terrible and no one can bear to fight through it, but then again, that's what we're working to improve, and we can't do it without feedback.

Second -Would you consider doing away with the points requirement for posting in our group? Obviously we'd like for everyone to read our stuff, so most (at least me) want to post to the broadest audience, which translates to the Premium Group. But, by doing that we bypass putting our work in front of Cop Shop members, unless we want to spend double points to post.

Unless there's something I'm missing, I don't see the benefit in paying double to post, other than achieving what I mention. Seems like a high price when making posting free would solve the problem.
Allen

GOOD NEWS!  Sol is going to change the group status to "no points" so you can post in the group for free.  He says they're also working on making posting to multiple groups available for one fee, but that won't be available for several weeks.  In the meantime, you can post your stories in Cop Shop for free.  Hope that takes care of it.  Looking forward to reading your crime stories.  JP

Guess what just happened to me! I wanted to enter my story for SS, but I had started posting in Cop Shop.  I figured It would cost all my reserves, but it cost me nothing to switch my story to Premium.  I don't know if this was just for the contest, or if it only goes one way (because I do remember facing those charges before and leaving thing as they were).  Anyway if our complaints caused a change in policy, I'm all for Allen's suggestion that we post for our group.  We can also post in more than one group, and I think that was a change, too, so we could post in Premium, as well as Cop Shop and Thriller, too.   we just need to ask Sol to change Cop Shop to no points, right?  JP

For J. P. In the fifties the dog would have been quarantined and watched for two weeks, I think it was, since the treatment for rabies was two shots in the stomach which hurt like hell. If you have any old police questions, I did twenty years in L. A., ten as a homicide lieutenant. However, things have changes since then, but I've stayed fairly current . I'm happy to help, but it may take a few days to get back to you.

Hey, R. M.--I just found your information about the dog/rabies situation in the fifties.  The dog is dead, his owner put him down, deafening the cop temporarily, so, no quarantine.  My best research says 21 shots in 1950, and I'm so old, I remember a playground exchange wherein somebody's uncle/cousin? had the series.  Scared us kids all to hell.  This was in Pico (before it became Pico-Rivera) when we were surrounded on all sides by orange groves, and we went to school with black noses from breathing in the smudge pot smoke, and the river still had water in it, though not much.   You probably know the place.  JP

We should get together.  Between us, we might make a complete individual.  I have attacks of guilt if I haven't thrown everything out that hasn't been used in a year.  From time to time I go through closets and throw everything away.  That's how I lost my high school and college yearbooks, my wedding dresses (both of them, at different times, of course) and all my children's baby clothes.  Well, you can't take it with you.  JP

Is it possible to set up a calendar where authors could post notices (and links, if it doesn't conflict with site policy) of release date, signings, classes, etc.?  Would it be of use to anybody? JP

Let me get this straight.  This exchange began with a lament over no reward for a thoughtful review.  The discussion took a turn into how to identify a non-paying item, and then morphed into a complicated exchange over the basic question: Free membership versus Premium membership.
I'm a premium member because that's how I started on the old site.  Something for nothing?  Bad policy, IMO.

Chick-en!  I wondered what had happened to you.  I already entered The Illusion Show.  Well, Janet, what do we do now?  I'll unsticky this until further notice.  Bye for now.  Let me know what you want to do>  JP

I just checked.  Right next to the story title and picture it says "Groups." and beneath that, Premium or Free (or both) plus whatever other groups they belong to.  We just have to get in the habit of checking.  And don't look at the red button that says "no points," since a premium member can post for no points, if they want.  IN CONCLUSION--no problem.  It's already been taken care of.  Thanks, Sol.  JP

Don't laugh--when I saw this post, the first thing that came to mind was The Adventures of Doctor Dolittle, by Hugh Lofting.  Are you kidding me?  Communication between the species?  The first step toward science fiction!  It was enough to boggle the eight-year-old mind.  Plus, I'd never heard anything like all those British-sounding sentences, living out there in the wilds of southern California.  I followed my mother around, book in hand, asking the questions that came up with every page.  And then, when the doctor started traveling all over the world, my mind was made up.  I would travel to all those places, exchange ideas with the great  minds of all species, and someday write books about it.  Well, it was a lofty goal for a kid, and I have accomplished some of it, and now it's time to write it.  JP
P.S. Sure, I did read all that other stuff, the intellectual junk, but Doctor Dolittle did it all for me.  If all you know about him is what you learned from some second-rate movies, I pity you.  And if I had to read those old books as an adult, you'd pity me.  They're strictly for eight-year-olds.

A second CSI team had now taken over the other end of the alley, where Luz Apagada’s body lay silent, unable to pass on any more information.  Ledbetter should have stayed, but they would have taken his weapon, standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.  And he wasn’t finished yet.
He had returned to apartment 810, where this craziness started, Luz’s place.  Remembering there was supposed to be a brother in the mix, he turned the knob with extreme caution.  The door swung open without a sound, and Ledbetter took his time easing his way in.
The man on the sofa was a big guy, probably 250 pounds, at least.  His musclebound arms were folded on his knees, his head was down and his shoulders shook.  He was sobbing his heart out, like a little kid.
“Who are you?”  Ledbetter challenged.
The “man” lifted his tear-stained face.  He was all of seventeen.  “I’m Blais Apagada.  I saw what you did.”

That's all I could come up with, for now. JP

This isn't necessarily something to fight about, but you know what I really like about  the new site?  The pictures!  (I did say this before, now that I think abut it.)  Adding a picture to your story really draws the reader in.  IMO it's not a waste of time, it's marketing.  JP

My biggest beef. I once reviewed another author's "entire" novella. And not once did they review anything of mine.
I know it is hard sometimes to reciprocate tit for tat- it takes me an hour and sometimes even longer to read, think about and post a review. So I do fall behind, but I make every effort to catch up. How can someone not even review a chapter of a work from someone who had read their entire novella? Or- for that matter say thanks for the review?
I mean, it was good. But still, I'm here to improve, I'd like some brutal honesty to come my way.

Looks like lunch hour is over,
Cheers,
CJ

That does hurt.  But maybe some authors feel that just reviewing anyone else's work is reciprocation.  I don't want to feel like we have to go back and forth, else how will we get new input?
There's also this: I read, but don't review fantasy, sci fi, poetry or YA (usually), because I'm so out of touch with those genres I wouldn't know what to say.  JP

Here's my suggestion:  Let's do the Chinese menu--take one point from each menu (mine and Amy's), and answer it, until we've got the whole thing solved.  Two points per installment, one from menu A, one from menu B.  How does that sound?  Janet, are there any more questions we need to answer?  JP

Well, I thought Janet said the shooter was on the roof across the alley.
1) How do we know for sure Luz was a shooter (although I do Like the idea of a brother and sister act)?  Maybe she was set up, and the weapon wasn't hers.
2) And why kill poor old Miss Betty?
3) And just who is the Chinese Delivery Tattoo Man?
4) Is Mrs. Dick Chinese?  Does she wear a Playboy bunny costume?
5) AND WHO WAS THE DEAD GUY IN THE ALLEY, REALLY?
6) Is there really no Peter Dick?

Wilson is clean; after all, he's a cop.  Where do you wanna go from here?

OH, and what does all this have to do with Christmas?  Or do we just want to leave it with a mysterious title?
