I read so much about being able to delete reviews, I thought I could handle this, but no. One of my reviews was sent multiple times with the message deleted. (Six blanks) But now, when I really want to delete a messed-up review, I don't see the delete option anymore. Was that option removed, or am I looking in the wrong place? Help, please.  JP

Go there,  to the old forums, poke around and it becomes very obvious that the new tNBW site is inferior to other writing sites because of a lack of a solid community feeling and the building bonds of friendship and understanding between ALL writers and in very genre.

I thank this site, its members for the helping hands! On the old forum everyone would see this gratitude of mine expressed... and that is what community is all about.

Nice to hear from you, Max.
Max, you always have a lot to say, and far be it from me to interrupt when a man is waxing strong with -ate word endings, but I did discern a kernel that I can address. You say we lack a spirit of community, but how can it be otherwise when we're all over the place? We just may have to be satisfied with the connections we make that do work. I live in a small town, but even here I don't know everybody, and it doesn't bother me. Maybe I'm a prickly personality.
I have met people on site about whom I care, and their well-being concerns me, and from time to time, we communicate. I have met others with whom I found I shared no interests, and still others who are no longer here. And extremely rarely, I came across someone who just pissed me off, and after an initial exchange, we both went on our way, happy not to be friends, connections, or even reviewers of each other's work. And that makes me feel fine, too.
Sounds like a community to me. I think our spirit is fine.
JP

No, I'm not talking about stories that might not be in my genre (actually, I'll read anything, and if I get the time, I might write anything). The latest appears not to be a writer at all, but a giant ad for a mind-control service based in India, for men who seek to control their women. I can't tell if it's drugs or hypnotism they're promoting, but either way, it's distasteful. Don't we have a button for reporting inappropriate material?

Congratulations, Janet--just paid a visit. Nice pic! Great way to build your platform. I'm confused; when did number four come out?  JP

I agree there were a lot of gems cast in the old forum, and I, too, got a lot out of them. But that stuff is nearly a year old now, and there must be new ideas  floating around. How about a water cooler setup, where folks could just exchange ideas? Don't make it a group we have to join--most of us are already at our limit. Just make it a feature of the Premium group forum. Would that work?

Traditionally it has been an 'unspoken rule' used by the authors to signify in a subtle and non-confrontational manner that they do not wish to garner reviews or comments from that particular reviewer again.
Writer/reviewer relationship issues resolved without a word exchanged and in a subtle manner with no fuss or confrontation; both parties can simply move on.
Not replying to reviews is a clean and simple (brilliant) solution to a possible stressful and embarrassing situation.

Wish I'd known about that. Live and learn. Now I can rest. Thanks, Dill.  JP

It's tough being a gadfly, isn't it, Vern?
But to get back to the original thread: A lot of our other instructors have posted their photo along with their credentials, which goes a long way toward instilling confidence. Of course, they were asking for a lot more than five bucks for enrollment.
As I recall, Sol himself called for members who felt they had something to share with others. LAMackey bit the bullet and stepped up to the plate. (Yes, I did that mixed-metaphor thing on purpose.) Maybe this was the solution for maintaining a member's anonymity while making help available to all.
Maybe, in future, all member-instructors can have a pretend name and be identified as member instructors. Then those who want to learn can accept their help without niggling concerns about "credentials."
What do you think?  JP

Probably nothing to do with your credentials, but how can you be a "founding member" when you only joined in September according to your profile? Take care. Vern

I believe this person can be a founding member if he/she has been a member for some time by another name, and came over with the rest of us from the old site. The LAMackey account may be new, but the person has been around for a while. By the way, does anyone remember who used that drawing as their personal picture when we moved?  JP roll

Janet and Janet, Love hearing from both of you. I put off writing until I retired, and could concentrate on it without distractions. I cheated myself. My house was full of kids- mine and other people's, and still gets that way sometimes. I bake cookies with eleven-year-olds, play games with four-year-olds, talk story ideas with their parents, who were once my students, and strike up conversations with any friendly-faced people I meet. I like people; I just didn't know how much I was going to like writing.
Do whatever you can to make time for the things you want to do NOW. If it works for you, then it's all good.  JP

Yikes! I'd have a hard time keeping track across so many books. Kudos to you, Janet.

I have a few chapters that are just outlines while some are partially filled in and still others are nearly complete. Most of them are fairly close to one another, but sometimes I end up almost completing, say, Chapters 4 and 5, while Chapter 3 is very nearly a blank page.

-Elisheva

That's not a bad thing if you are still in the drafting phase. Discipline can kick into high gear once the drafting is done and the rewrites begin smile

Hi, Linda--I like the first part of what you and Janet said--let the muse take you. Or, in my own down to earth language. if you get a killer idea for chapter 24, why work through all those other chapters just to get to it? That would be as silly as forcing yourself to go down every aisle in the store to find the toilet paper. Okay, my muse's manner of speaking is a little harsh, but I think you do get my point.
Anyway, I'm in rewrite with Roberta now, and I think her story is perfect, but then someone points out a hole, or doesn't understand my meaning, and I just hop over and fix it. The real discipline, to me, is making sure I correct each and every error I can.  JP

When my daughter and her sheriff's deputy husband react so strongly to anti-police news items, all I have to do is think of stories like Deputy Goforth's.  Just because officers of the law don't come home telling stories of the dangers they face every day doesn't mean they aren't out there. They put themselves at risk for our safety--and that takes courage.  JP

Hey Dill, lay off. It's only natural to get so involved in your work it makes you emotional. You have to care about your characters to make them believable.  Then you put the whole thing away for a year or so, until you can be objective about cutting, changing and deleting stuff you once thought was golden. If you're still crying, put it away again.  JP

Sol--Thanks ever so much. I knew it had been discussed numerous time, I just wasn't sure how it had been dealt with. I think I was directed to the page before, after another dumb question of mine. All I have to do is set the search parameters to all, all, and all, and there it is! My apologies. (But I still think it would be easier if I didn't have to go looking for it.) Is there a way to set it permanently?
I'll go check.  JP

There's a big blue button at the bottom of the listings that bring you to a list of all content posted in the way you are speaking. It says Read More New Content from Your Groups.

I tried it, Cobber, but it doesn't do what I meant--it will give me all the poems ever written, or all the essays, etc. one genre at a a time, and it's not timely. Here's where I have to mention the old site.
Every day, all the newest postings were listed, with the most recent at the top of the list. book, poem, essay, short story, whatever--one by one they appeared at the top of the list. When a new work was posted, the one at the bottom dropped to page 2, and so on. Everybody's work got the same amount of exposure, with author, genre, and pertinent details all on one line. The title was a link to the actual work, so one could read and review.
If you check some categories, you'll see there are works posted in January still prominently displayed on your home page. That's an unfair amount of exposure, considering there are other categories whose postings roll off in a matter of hours.
Just my opinion.  JP

Well, you've done a great job trying to accommodate all our wishes--the lists of new works include more now, but I still have that feeling. Some categories fill up rapidly with new works, and they disappear from the postings within a few hours. That means if I'm busy for a day, I miss out on some things. (Yes, I know they're available, but I usually don't look--call me human.) On the other hand, some categories remain unchanged for lack of new postings, and they remain on the home page day after day, even though I've read them all and given them a review.
Can't we just have one big list of new postings, with the posting date and genre designated? There is an advantage to mixing them up--many times I was attracted to read something outside my comfort zone, and found new interests and new friends. I met dagnee by reading her blog!
Please consider placing all new postings on one big list, and let them roll over on the same time line--I think the current list is a disservice to the authors whose works disappear in the blink of an eye.
JP

Well, it's taken me half the night, but I figured out how to use wattpad, the site being used for entries in the contest (Harlequin sytycw). Please stop by and have a read. https://www.wattpad.com/user/JpLundstrom

Don't forget--if you have a romance written, you can enter. It just takes a little time.
