A dyslexic man walks into a bra...
Did you hear about the dyslexic agnostic insomniac?
He stayed up all night wondering if there really is a dog.

I do something Larry Brooks calls "Story Beats." I just write, line by line, a summary of what happens in the story, chronologically (usually two or three pages), then divide into chapters. If something new occurs to me, I can place it in the story beats where it belongs before I've written the entire story. Taking the time to plan saves writing time, in the long run. Larry Brooks's blog is called Story Fix http://storyfix.com/ He also has very expensive seminars and on line classes, but I think I've gotten enough from the blog and his books. (Some are free on Kindle)
ps Is it redundant to use summary and chronologically in the same sentence?
Yay, Janet!
I've collected quite a few names, but am still waiting to hear from a couple of people who were instrumental in my getting the story written. JP
Thanks for your tips. I started the book two years ago, and I was surprised to find some old reviews erased. I will keep your suggestions in mind for the next books.
Another problem is that I don't know what name to use for some reviewers. Please don't hesitate to message me the name you'd like me to use in acknowledging your help.
JP
I'm putting together a list of acknowledgements for The Fruit of the Poisonous Tree (you know, the story of Mel and Jerry), something I neglected to do on my first book (sorry!). Please send me a message to let me know how (or if) you'd like your name to appear. Thanks. JP
I keep forgetting to give people the link. I'll never be any good in sales. Thanks for the reminder. JP

The Adventures of a Young Girl is available to read for free on Kindle right now. If you read the story on site, or if you'd like to read it on Kindle, I sure would appreciate a review from you. Thanks a bunch. JP
Adam and Clark Kent, the tap-dancing wonders.
Congratulations, guys! Much success in the new year. JP
Just published Adventures of a Young Girl. It's free to read for a short time, if you didn't get to see it on site. Cross your fingers!
Looks like The Boys are hiding out in the bathroom again, sharing their command of bad words. Guess they still can't think of anything to write.
Good idea, Janet.
Welcome back, Max. We missed you. Hope you are keeping well. JP
Thanks, Janet! Today is my first day on the computer since the seventh. I was in the hospital on the ninth; I got a new hip for my birthday. It hurts like a you-know-what, but each day is a little easier. Don't expect me to keep you posted; I don't want to talk about it. Instead, I've been reading housewife's porn--it can be distracting. LOL JP
Ideas for books to give as gifts--all crime stories, some new, some classics.

Want to curl up and watch a good movie? These Christmas stories were recommended on line, and I agree. Name the movie and the bad guy.
Christmas Criminals
1. Just released from prison, all this guy wants is to start a new life with the girl of his dreams, whom he met through pen pal letters in prison. But between them and happiness stands her crazy brother and his crew of deadly criminals.
2. A cat burglar is forced to take a bickering, on-the-verge-of-divorce couple hostage when his plans go awry.
3. A shady lawyer attempts a Christmas Eve crime, hoping to swindle the local mob out of some money. But his partner, a strip club owner, might have different plans for the cash.
4. A wealthy father on his deathbed invites his four daughters home for Christmas and asks them to murder his wife. The girls find that their stepmother was a convicted murderess who may or may not have killed her last husband, and they begin to fall prey to a killer dressed in a yellow rain slicker.
5. A toy store robber hides in an audition room, and is cast as a detective in a film. For the role, he shadows a real private investigator and the two solve a mystery of their own.
6. A trans-gender working girl is released from jail only to discover her pimp/boyfriend has been unfaithful.
7. A Russian-British midwife saves the baby of a teenage prostitute and becomes involved with a Russian crime boss and his hit man.
8. A grocery store clerk occasionally sells drugs from his cash register at work, but when he’s not there on a quiet Christmas Eve, his replacement decides to become an impromptu drug dealer.
9. The office Christmas party just got serious, and a visiting cop fights an office building full of terrorists.
10. A suburban housewife, an assassin who got amnesia and has forgotten all about her old life, finds her past catching up with her, right around the holidays.
Yes, I have used this site and a couple others. I used a western settlers name generator for the names I used in the Adventures of a Young Girl. I used a Thai name generator for an action-adventure story I started but have yet to complete. I used a lyrical name generator for a female superhero I was going to write but lost interest in the character and spent my whole time playing with names. I always use foreign-language name sites for other stories, because sometimes a name describes character traits that define the character. A person could get carried away, if you're not careful.
Happy Turkey Day to all! God bless and be thankful our peace has not been marred by terrorism and devastation. And all the other good stuff, like family and friends (this means you) and those blessings you hold dear. JP
Better yet, you can base your next novel on an author whose book event is invaded by a criminal on a shooting spree. He's wrecked his getaway car on the highway and he's desperate. He takes over the venue (library? bookstore?) holding the author and attendees hostage all night long, while police and FBI (yes, the feds want him, too) congregate outside. You can make it funny, like Cadillac Man, or grim, like all the others. It'll be a best-seller, then a movie, then a Pulitzer prize-winner, and it will have been time well spent. Have fun with it. JP
I read a lot of praise for the program True Detective. Is this because it's good drama, or because it's very realistic? Or maybe both? What's your opinion? Also, there's another show, based on a Danish tv show, called The Killing. I thoroughly enjoyed the first season, with its surprise ending. After that, I got tired of the MC's constant depression and the dreary weather (which I guess is similar to that in Denmark). I'm from Arizona, not Seattle, where the stories take place.
How does everybody else feel about the two shows?
I have to hand it to you, Janet--you are a paragon of promotion! If I didn't already own all your books, I'd be sure to buy them. Since you have the experience and I don't, I have a question for you. (And anyone else who's been working it.) Have you found it to be worth the effort to maintain so many pages and a web site? Do you have a blog? Professional curiousity. JP

Far out, Janet! That's what you would have heard back then. I knew what it was as soon as I heard the first few notes. Iconic. How did you get the music? Good show. JP
How do I know to go looking for new book postings if I can't see that there are new postings? Or poems--those go by in the blink of an eye. Short stories seem to run in phases, like spooky stories for Halloween, but they sometimes get stuck on the home page forever. Mrs. Piddles posted an article on October 11, but the one before that was posted July 16--three whole months! Of the five essays that remain on my home page, two were posted in July, and three date from March--hardly new works. And in the year and a half I've been a member, I've only seen one script posted, and yay! I'm all for script-writing, love to do it myself, one day, but it's been there since July seventh, and likely to remain there, since we don't see many of those. My whole home page is being taken up by things I've already read, except for the ones that zoom by so fast, I miss them. And that can happen in a day. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let's group everything together and tag it with its form and genre, let all roll by at a fair rate of speed, and stop crowding the front page with old news.
