I will definitely let you know when it happens. And yes, it's the BP-Husky refinery. So far it looks a given - there's no way I can catch up with what they're doing without looking them in the eye. Monday I'm discussing this with my direct boss - the project manager still thinks we can do it telecon and in one day, but I don't think so. Depending on my what my boss says, I'll push harder with the PM. This month is out, September will be hard to fit a trip in, so depending on the other guys at the refinery, it could be earliest October. I'll speak with Hubby and have him agree for me to stay 1-2 nights over a weekend and only fly back on the Sunday.

I'm so excited, but I'm also so scared it won't pan out. *thumbs crossed!* smile

OK, I just put together the magic and can see the end battle for Dictates. Took long enough, didn't it?  That's what I get for writing without a template. However, the magic is AWESOME.  Can't wait to put down those words. Then I only have to figure out how to get the characters to a HFN point in the story. (I may end it with Lewellen and Petra getting together...we'll see)

I also took Acts (first half that ends at the duel with Alina) to my camping vacation and dared to leave it on a table...quite nerve wracking, I have to admit. Feedback was good. Of the readers who took the time, there were some interesting suggestions. I left the book with a beta reader who will mark it up with red ink. I'm still awaiting her opinion.

I queried a publisher about the autism stories. I'm still waiting to hear back. He is one of my first choices for a dream publisher, because he does High Fantasy as well as Blog-to-Book.  I don't expect much, but it is nice to hope and I'll hold out until my (first!) rejection notice comes in. Then I'll tape it to a bulletin board and throw darts at it every couple days. (maybe I'll make it into a drinking game and get a beer if I hit the publisher's name) Hmmm.

Still doing twitter. Still doing Facebook. Still overworked at work. It is still summer and I'm surrounded by injuries that follow weird patterns. Today's Soup Du Jour is eye injuries. A globe rupture and a different patient with facial fractures.

Later.

I also owe you a lot of reviews! And I'm so glad to hear about the autism stories - I read everyone on facebook too!!! *crosses all my fingers and toes*

Also, there's a good chance that I'll have to visit Detroit/Oregon OH in the next 2-3 months ... How far away is that from you guys?! All I know it's a hell of a lot closer than the west coast!!!!

I feel you overwork pain. Sorry to hear it's not really any better. Hang in there!!!

Okay, a new chapter is up in B2 (Ch 11, Healing by Night).

The next one WILL take a while.

I'm signing off for today.  I might be able to take a quick look in later.

I've made a note - this weekend will hopefully be kind to me and allow me to catch up!

I'm almost back to normal (talking about my routine - my mental state is another topic for another day!) smile

Latest chapter is done - should be up towards the end of the week and then I can catch up with everyone, everything and a few reviews over the weekend!

A quick note to say I'm still alive and kicking. Went away for a bit and had no time for anything writing related. Hoping things will be back to normal sometime next week! But not today - laundry, shopping and an airshow are waiting. Talk soon! Janet

My type of humour! smile

A novel might be a stretch, novella maybe? Not sure where to start though:

Option (1): Showing their happiness/perfect marriage, then the suspicion, hiring a PI or doing it herself, getting confirmation, working through/planning what to do - you can also show the life of the cheating wife. And then finish with this as the final scene.

Option (2): Or Starting with this as the first scene and her poisoning her husband and he his wife, how they deal/cope with it, and if you're looking for a Romance, granted it will be somewhat dark happy ever after, how the killer wife and pharmacist fall in love and live happily ever after.

Are you seriously considering doing this Janet?

A lot of men writing Romance novels use female pen names. A lot of women writing Sci-Fi use male pen names. JK Rowling was advised to use her initials as boys would never read a book written by a female.

So it would seem it does matter, although for your example, it's maybe more to do with genre expectations or preferences than being F/F.

This is slowly changing and is being challenged. Maybe we will read a book written by an author one day rather than a book written by a woman, man, or *insert any other description here that has nothing to do with writing*. Maybe. One day soon.

a) Observe the 5-second rule of dropped food? Isaac, because his family are dirt poor and have no food to waste (like 99% of the border population to be honest) and less serious, George (the horse  specialist and joker - more than everyone else that is, all of them are but not this much) just to gross everyone out

b) drink more than they should? Anthony Aiden - this one's easy, he already drink more than he should! And sleeping around too!

c) wind surf? Catherine - especially if anyone else told her not to!

d) trip? The villain - and at the worst time possible (that chapter is almost ready to go)

e) Disassemble something (either mechanical or magical) Black John - he's the hands on guy around for sure

f) Want to buy a house (as opposed to a flat / renting) Everyone that doesn't, not that they can afford it sad and Black John will have to find a bigger place to stay soon though and he'd be anle to afford it

You have a hat, I have an ass. But in all seriousness, the last two numbers, depending if you want to keep this 100% believable or on the edge of believable, will be determined by the human body is my understanding. What I'm not sure about is: have you considered variability? And is there even variability between humans - for example, would a healthy, fit 20yo be able to walk out while a 50yo smoker should've worn a red shirt that day?

Not sure I'm helping, but basically if you want A to walk out of there, the latter two numbers are not that flexible based on what Amy is saying.

Interesting given that Peter has said gaining the title is a side-benefit, i.e. it's not his aim/end-goal - he simply sees Matthew unfit and anyone but Matthew will do pretty much. Peter has also never thought or mentioned that he thinks he is better than Matthew at all. And to some extent he has forgotten in the whole process he's going to have to fill those shoes. But adding that Peter thinks he will be better than Matthew won't hurt either.

Not sure if you can remember, but Matthew is actually struggling with this exact same problem, just before Geordie's funeral in the family's burial vault there was a scene where he was questioning whether he deserves the title and are doing his parents/brother proud. It's been a while since I wrote the scene where he and Catherine were talking about growing up - but I'm pretty sure that Catherine has noticed the growth in Matthew over the years she didn't see him. Matthew still needs convincing though that he is worthy (and I might need to do something that helps him along the way, because Catherine herself won't be able to convince him probably) whereas Peter is a lost case still stuck in the past.

You make interesting suggestions I haven't considered. I'm against a tight deadline to get Matthew and Catherine married before everyone else knows she's pregnant which complicates things but I'll definitely keep it mind. Not sure, but having animals feed of Peter's corpse might also get really dark for Romance!

Once Peter is taken care of, this will be the next play and then the dreaded 'standard issue' Romance trope where the MC's go their separate way before they end up together for ever after. And then it's on to the next book finding Black John a wife and giving the scullery maid a central role for a change instead of just being a background character to make readers hate a noble lord.

Based on a review, I'm thinking about altering Peter's motivation just a tiny bit. He's reason for not killing Catherine was questioned, and I have to agree, it doesn't make a lot of sense. So the change I'm considering will have him actively trying to get rid of her for her interference the night of the failed raid as well as for supporting Matthew, and specifically for proposing the idea of having a fair with a archer comp. I have a way to make it work - instead of leaving to leave, he'll just be 'leaving' to get his crossbow - I'll also clarify his preference is to kill people from afar and not so much with his own hands (sword/dagger) unless he HAS too.

Any thoughts?

Also, njc, I've left a few replies on your review. Couple of questions to try and understand your thoughts better. Thanks for all your support!

Second 4th of July. So far a few odd instances where people are just shooting fireworks for the hell of it, but last year was more look and see. I'm not sure we'll be going to any celebrations this year, but it would be a good experience. I'm 5 miles south of the Canadian border, so still on US soil! No Canada. smile

Yes, so much this. Although I think you know exactly what the likelihood is that any of them will ever know/experience what they had brought about.

I'm reading now the referendum isn't necessarily a given and that nothing may yet result. What I'm also seeing is (again) a media that is doing again what it's not supposed to do - bias reporting. My, they found one person who had no clue what the vote was about and now wants to change from 'leave' to 'stay' and all the other millions that voted 'leave' also now want to 'stay' ... And all these people signing petitions to have another referendum so that they can change their vote ALL of course voted 'leave'. I'm wondering if the masses believe this shit. Honestly, I think the media also needs to be hold accountable for what they're doing.

amy s wrote:

So what does everybody think about the EU and Britain?

Janet? I'm curious about an Aussie perspective.

Me: Britain's promise to its homebound citizens was to spend the money that was draining out of their country on its own citizens. We'll see if that comes to pass. Greece is sweating bullets right now. Mainland Europe is deciding if they want to bail. What a mess.

The horror of it all is all the google hits wondering what the 'EU' was.  Americans. Sheesh.

I can give you one Aussie perspective, but I haven't really been around to get other personal ones, just what I saw in Aus news outlets. It was practically non-existent in the US news media because Clinton or Trump wasn't involved! And no one at work had any opinions - misses my old colleagues and friends a bit - so at this point it's just what mr C and I are thinking (okay, so make that 2 Aussies!). smile

You guys have re-established my faith in the American people though! *fist bump* Thanks for asking! smile

I would've voted "leave". All the EU did was to introduce another level of governance with positions filled by leeches that someone had to pay from money they don't have. The only real difference the EU made was to open the borders between the EU members despite the varying levels of (in)competence of some of the members to actually control borders and therefore they adjusted the border control of the whole block to the lowest common dominator. And as we all know, open borders is a great idea! [I'm being sarcastic here - I actually support legal immigration which should include humanitarian visas, but not a free for all.]

After the EU did that (open the borders) and got all the trade agreements in place (which isn't even worth the paper it was written on - it replaced in kind agreements for most but I can stand corrected on this one - this is all my opinion), they had nothing to do really. So instead of downsizing, they did what any bureaucrat worth his mettle would do: kept themselves busy by interfering with things where they shouldn't and weren't ask/supposed to (and redistributed even more money that no one had from countries on the brink of collapse to already collapsed countries), and just managed to piss people off in general. So for the last how many years they excelled at that thing bureaucrats do best: nothing worthy or what they were supposed to be doing while being paid to do so and losing touch with the people.

So for a few countries this was just bloody awesome. For the rest, meh, not so much except unwanted interference. I'm not surprised the Brits are first to go - there are a lot of theories flying about in the US media at the moment, which is all good, but to me personally the only one that I think matters is national identity. The Brits have one hell of an identity - mmm, and they kept the pound around instead of using Euros ... That is of course ignoring the outpour of money and the influx of immigrants.

Yep, no one saw this coming. \some more sarc - only if you had your head in the sand or worked for the EU you didn't see this coming.

I think this is the start of the end of the EU. The EU never really had a function to be honest. And despite the market reaction, this is nothing really. These countries existed before the EU, they'll do after the EU too. Worst case, people have to apply for visas to work/live in GB again. *gasps* That's basically the biggest issue. Oh, and they have to find a new PM. If they need advice, Australia can help them real quick with how you get rid of PMs overnight. Also not anything too concerning. (You'll note that I couldn't give two shits where the EU administrators and council members find a new job - then again, their buddies will make sure they're taken good care of).

IMO, Germany will also leave the EU, soon after the UK, although probably not the first.

So in short, I think the British royal family/the queen has more purpose than the EU.

It could be worse. As far as I can tell, if I want my disability benefits to continue, I have to let the IRS tax me as a resident of the U.S. even though I'm now living in Canada. That means two "resident" tax returns every year until I flatline. It wouldn't be so bad, except you have to declare all of your foreign accounts to each taxing authority every year, with fines that can bankrupt you, even for honest mistakes. So I have to tell Canada about all of my U.S. accounts, and I have to tell the IRS about my Canadian accounts, even though both idiotic organizations get this information electronically from the banks in both countries. Futuo!

We're setting ourselves up to ensure that when we leave, we'll be cutting all ties. No property, no 401k, no investments, no anything.

And you wonder why we want to rip up the income tax system?  I'm not sure it's a comfort, but it's ten times worse for businesses, who often have to pay tax on money they haven't received.

Ever wonder why game shows that give away merchandise always give some cash with the jackpot prizes?  It's because the IRS has to be paid, and that 'spending money for your trip!' is there so you'll be able to pay it and collect your prizes.
