janet reid wrote:I'm also saying you can give a brutally honest review but you can still be nice.
Find an example in which I was honest, and, for that matter since I have been back certainly, giving of compliment in equal proportion to criticism (or so I tried) and not nice. If you cannot even know what I may be talking about, then how do you know, and have rudely presumed all along to know, that I cannot be honest and nice and so in need or your advice? It is true I have no time for all the folderal (yes, I had to look that one up for spelling) of "If I may be so bold as to suggest the following improvements . . ." In point of fact, I got jumped on for suggesting an author's explicit criticism of euphemisms such as Gosh for God was insulting to those parents who would rather instruct their children to do so. How was that friendly from the author about my suggestion on being nice to people?
When I say you, I don't mean you as in you Charles, I mean as in anyone and everyone on the site i.e. in general. So my comments were not meant as a personal attack. If I've said "your reviews are crap", this reply would've been more than justified. Hope this clarifies that bit.
Referring to other people's work that doesn't meet your as in Charles' supposed standard, as junk, is not acceptable. And that's what I've taken exception to. Also referring to people who made friends on the site as "sucking up" to each other, is not nice. I took exception to that as well. But irrespective of whether my previous comments have been general or not, if your reviews are anything like your comment in this thread, I'd say it would be justified to assume that you as in Charles may be thinking you like in Charles are giving constructive critism wheras you as in Charles are in reality just being rude and obnoxious. If I could care enough, I would've checked out your reviews. But frankly, I don't. If anything, I'd rather suggest you read your comments before you click submit in future. Because your initial comment was anything but plain or rational.

Charles, mate, the site has moved on since you joined. Not saying what you're referring to isn't happening, but it's the minority.
I'm also saying you can give a brutally honest review but you can still be nice.
And no, there's no junk on this site. None. Lots of pieces that needs improvement, incl mine, but junk? Thats harsh and not needed.

Re: Point system dying? (61 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Charles, you don't need to make friends or even be friendly, but some decent courtesy does go along way. We're here to learn by reading/reviewing and getting read/reviewed. And surprisingly, work being posted here do need inprovement as I'm sure your writing do as well. If its too hard for you, don't read on and don't leave a review. But referring to anything on this site as "junk" shows to me you need to grow up as a person and as a writer. Of course you can criticize, thats what the site is for, but you can still be decent and supportive in doing so. It's not sucking up, it's called good manners. Each to their own but like Sol said, your comment doesn't contribute anything to this debate.

Re: Point system dying? (61 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I think that it should occur to a newbie that in order to get more reviews, reciprocation is a must. This wasn't spelled out in the old site, per se, either, but beyond common courtesy it was logical to do the payback. I made some friends on the site - including you, Aussie - doing that. There will be those who won't even respond to reviews, let alone reciprocate, but who needs those writers, anyway? They've made their prresence, or lack thereof, known. So live and let live, and let the cream (those sincere in their efforts to improve their craft) rise to the top.
When I joined it was different given you couldn't post withoutpoints ignoring location for now which is a topic for another day LOL I joined as a reviewer to get points as I knew I was going to post eventually. But, points aside, most of the replies/feedback I got writers did offer to recip and if not for that it would've taken me much longer to get the hang of things. So all I'm saying is, keep on doing that it can only help new joiners?! And yeah, in the process you do get to know people too! And if you're really lucky you get to make new friends too!

Re: Point system dying? (61 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Then again, when you review a no points piece why not let the author know about this? The new writers I've reviewed so far was just clueless and wasn't doing it on purpose. And while you're at it, explain the recip process as well, they just new?! That's how it worked when I joined the old site, people told me stuff I didn't know. This isn't a problem with the new site, this is us old siters that need to adapt to the change and keep the good bits from the old site where we can (but not at all cost, the new site has a lot going for it). Hope this make sense! Cheers Janet R

Re: Any ideas (13 replies, posted in Romance Inc.)
I think I managed two chapters of the first book from memory. The writing to me was as if a teenager had done the writing and I just couldn't connect with the heroine. I mean, she was impressed by a twenty story building. Then falling into his office was a little too much as well. And from there on I just couldn't. I doubt the author could care less, but if she worked it on a site like this, it would've been also about the writing and not only the sex.
Oh, and not to mention a self-made billionaire under thirty, with a perfect body and what not else. VERY realistic.
And thanks for all the great ideas!!! I'll get started on the first one this weekend.

Hey everyone
If you have any ideas we can discuss, please let me know! The only one I have for now, is to have a discussion on 50 shades, whether you've read it or not. So if you're game, I'll start a thread to get some opinions on that!
Thanks

Re: Tazar
Yep, hitting an unsuspecting opponent from behind (as well as attacking a sleeping / imprisoned / pinned down opponent) is a bad guy trait. Same for kicking him in the nuts or spitting in his eye so he can't see to fight. These are all called cheap shots.
Good guys aren't allowed such shortcuts. Anti-heros can pull them off, but I don't think you're trying to cast Tazar into that light.
(Janet, I'm tagging you too for that hit Matthew did on Black John)
K
This is way worse than what Matthew did - he gave Black John a friendly slap between the shoulder blades while he was next to him, granted, with some force but that's because BJ's a big guy and can take it. I thought it was akin to a friendly, but hard punch on the shoulder.
So, I can either change it to a punch on BJ's shoulder or add more to it to make it clear it's not an attack from behind, although unexpected.
And here I thought guys weren't complicated .... *shakes head*
Thanks!!!!

Re: PByrd's Thread (4 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
Hi Philisha
Now that you've read the book (excluding the epilogue), do you see Phoebe transition from insecure and fearful to confident and pissed? What is your overall thought on the hero and heroine?
The change in Phoebe came through with a lot of clarity, but personally, I still have to see a bit more of that from her to be convinced it's a permanent change and not a temporary one due to fear and concern for Elizabeth. This is something I think you can also leave for the latter books and not something you need to close in this one.
To be brutally honest, I'm not so sure I like this absolute and complete submission from the alpha wolves and vampires to Phoebe and her sisters. The rest can do, but not the alpha ones/mates. Personally I'd have them treat her with way more respect and tread around her with more care, but especially Jarad who's her mate I don't like it much that he's so submissive. But this is my opinion and it's still up to you if you which way you want to go. If you agree, it wouldn't be too hard to fix though as you just need to tone it back a bit instead of all out changing the story.
Also, keep in mind this is not my genre. I'm actually surprised that I like it so much. It's one of the stories I really looked forward to seeing a new chapter of! And I'm so not a werewolf/vampire person. Too realistic I'm afraid! LOL
Hope this helps, but yeah, I'm going to miss this one and hope to see the next one soon after this one comes to an end! (no pressure)
Cheers

ps - hope I see fairies and trolls and angels in the next one!!!!

Re: Northern Skies - Janet! (520 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
I've made some changes to Chapter 12 (Chapter 10 - After the storm). This is what I've added because it makes better sense to do it in Ch12 than the next one. This will clarify why Matthew is still planning to raid Aiden Tower despite Catherine's assurance that Anthony (or Lord Brat for those who's more inclined to his proper title ) isn't involved.
Black John chuckled. “Aye, but only because I don’t want to miss witnessing the young lord Aiden’s long overdue rebuke.”
The mentioning of Aiden’s name forced Matthew to replace pleasant thoughts with not so pleasant ones. He needed to focus on today’s pursuit at some point.
Although he believed Catherine when she had stated her brother meant him no harm, he wasn’t about to extend the courtesy to Aiden until he proved himself wor-thy of Matthew’s trust. Matthew also knew that sitting down with the young Lord Aiden and reasonably discussing the finer points of border politics in a civilised way wasn’t going to be enough to bring Aiden around.
Today’s raid on Aiden Tower was to serve the sole purpose of showing the younger man what the stakes were. And Aiden was about to make an important de-cision, whether he liked it or not.
Thanks for everyone reading and all your support so far!
Cheers

Re: Northern Skies - Janet! (520 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
Who's who?
Here is a quick reference guide to who is who in Northern Skies. For the old people!
Matthew Dacre - The Earl of Norwood
# Black John* - Captain of the Guard at Norwood Castle and an expert swordsman
# Tom* - expert scout, pathfinder and spy
# George* - expert with horses
# Henry* - expert medic (nearly as good as an old village wife!)
# Robert* - expert archer
# Nicholas - bailiff at Dacre Tower
# Alice - Nicholas's wife
# Mary - chamber maid at Dacre Tower
# Will Taylor - scout from Dacre Tower
# Davie - footloun from Dacre Tower
* denotes Matthew's trusted friends and members of his inner circle
Catherine Miller nee Aiden - Dowager Viscountess Eamont
# Anthony Aiden, Baron Aiden - brother
# Simon Aiden, Baron Aiden - father (deceased)
# James Forster - captain of the guard at Aiden Tower
# Humphrey Miller, Viscount Eamont - Catherine's husband (deceased)
# Agnes - Catherine's waiting woman at Aiden Tower
Hope this helps! I'll update the list as we go and some may even disappear eventually.
Cheers

Re: Northern Skies - Janet! (520 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
I think just changing the tense would work.
Simple Past will put it into the rest of the story.
If you want a long flash back it is better to put it in Simple Past and use italics to show that it is a flash back.
A lot of "had"s can drag the reading out so it is best to avoid using a whole lot of Past Perfect in fiction.
Rebecca, I'll keep this as my get-out-of-jail card if I can't do the one paragraph thing! There is a heap of "had"s that makes it really slow.
Thanks!!!!

Re: Northern Skies - Janet! (520 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
Arms crossed, Catherine’s fingers drummed a rapid beat on her sleeves as she paced in front of the hearth. She had arrived the night before only to find Anthony out and servants unwilling to disclose his whereabouts. If she knew him well enough, he'd been drinking and had arrived late at night. The groom she'd seeking him sent an hour ago would have returned by now if Anthony was still away from the manor.
I was thinking this would be the way to go ... condensing a day-and-a-half into a paragraph or two.
But I have an even better suggestion than a tell-all-flashback. I mean nine paragraphs is a stunning amount of real-estate. You could just tell the scene live
The scene covers a day-and-a-half of boring stuff really, hence why I just want to give a re-cap. If I can think of something to spice it up, I'd go this way, otherwise, as said, getting it down/limit the space it takes up, is the way to go.
Good feedback! Thanks!

Re: Cost of Posting (4 replies, posted in Cop Shop)
JP
Ask Sol to change the cop shop to a no-point group - then you'd be able to post here without having to pay points again. As I understand, if you post in a points group, you could also post in no-points groups, yet reviewers will still get points for reviewing, but if you post to a points group, it will cost "double".
Hope this makes sense!

Hi Sol
Really appreciate all your hard work! I feel like I have the hang of the new site now, so don't change it too much now!!!! LOL, you can't win! But seriously, the new site works. I like all the little gadgets and stuff, like book covers and the little symbol-thingys that's all over the place. Most importantly, I'm back to reading, reviewing and posting instead of fumbling around, which I think is what matters!

Topic: Who is your favourite romance writer? (3 replies, posted in Romance Inc.)
This is an easy one for me. Stephanie Laurens. Ever since I've read the first one, I was hooked and if I see one of her books I haven't read yet (mostly new ones), I pick it up immediately - her name on the cover is enough. I love her style and sense of humour. Although I have to admit, her latest books are not as good as the Cynster series novels. But it's still good.
She recently started to publish her own medieval novels (which is way more steamy than her usual style) under MS Laurens. The first one was 200,000 words plus, and again, not to the standard I'm used to, but still a good read.
I do read romance novels widely, but with most other authors it's hit and run for me. Stephanie was the first author who consistently maintained the same standard for me. My favourite book of hers is Captain Jack's woman, the prequel to the Bastion Club series which was also an absolute pleasure to read.
It would be interested to find out who the other romance member favourite authors are!
Cheers
