Well, you're talking with someone who's middle name is "confusion and misunderstanding" in capital letters ... so this will get heaps interesting before it settles!  LOL  As is, so keep the stumbles coming!  smile

Not sure how long I'm going to be on this side of the pond ...  Has given in a mountain of paperwork just before Christmas for a long term assignment in Washington State for the company I work for (between 3-5 years, if not longer).  I'll probably know within the next month or so whether it's going to happen.  So things might get crazy around here soon!  Super excited about the opportunity though.  The whole family will be relocating.  Just a bit worried if I'm going to have time for writing.  But I'll def try!

Well, I like njc's enthusiasm.  My dad's an electrical technician, and I went to high school in a system which had academic and technical streams.  Did the technical stream and electronic selective for 1 year before I decided it wasn't for me - too hard (don't tell njc though, don't want him to think it is!).  Changed over to electrical for the rest of my high school years.  So I still know a little bit, just enough to be dangerous and to keep a conversation going (with a little bit of help from googly bear)!  So now it's just fingers crossed that njc can make it work!  Because I sure as hell can't help him!  smile

So far, I haven't blocked anyone.  It would also take more than a disagreement or someone not liking my writing to make me use this particular functionality of the new site.  That said, I do think there would be times (0.001%) where it would be useful, for example where the feedback is abusive and unnecessarily insensitive.  Maybe I haven't been around long enough, but so far, I have yet to experience it.

I have no idea if I have been blocked.  But I would hope that I would be informed if any feedback I have given was hurtful before someone would go down this route.  That way, it would also give me as a reviewer the opportunity to grow and improve.  And to apologise.

hey amy

It's not that bad!  Writing is ticking along at it's usual pace in between everything else, but I do see merit in keeping your suggestion in mind.  Those days do happen and your way would make it work for us, not against us.

But either way, thanks!  You're awesome!  And I now know who I can bug when I'm really down (and have a broken neck)!!!  smile

And I would never compare our genres.  It's too different.  And absolutely, I'd rather be told here where I can improve!  So keep it coming!!!

I still have a lot to learn, but I was more trying to say that I think you are much further than what you think you are, both writing and reviewing ...  Next time I'll keep me out of it just to avoid misunderstandings!  smile

Janet,

I feel that I'm at about a third to fifth grade level in my writing.  I've seen big improvement since starting at this site, but I'm not going into 'middle school' until I get better at revision.  Graduation means publishing, and I'm not ready for that in the least.  You are always your own worst critic.  Be willing to give yourself a break. :-)

A

Well, if you're 3-5th grade, I'm barely out of nappies!  Not so much because I'm being hard on myself, but because I honestly think your writing is really good.  What should worry you more is that I understand what you're saying (writing) ...  smile

Seriously though, some days I feel I've done well with my reviews, and other days, not so much.  Like you say, we are our worst critics.  Which is a good thing, but only if it drives you to improve and doesn't cause you to stop trying!

Yep, it's a tantalum cap.  Now, why would I choose an expensive tantalum cap for that spot?  You did read the articles, right?

Well, only until I saw the first tan blob picture.  But luckily it did cover why one would use them - where small or longer lifetime or both matter.  How much more expensive are they?

I do believe Kanye now ranks higher than both Patrick and Oprah, but I could be wrong as, inexcusably, I missed the last combined Illuminati and Fire of Rankin meeting where it would've been confirmed as I was watching a rerun of Friends.  My bad.

Yes, it is mere coincidence, but I'm not sure why you would want to disarm a bomb?  wink

K (hope you're looking over your shoulder!)

I'm guessing here, but next thing you're going to tell me is you also know there is a group of red-heads known as The Fire of Rankin lead by the Septi Caput Capitis counsel which secretly rules the world from Edinburgh, Scotland ...  It's not true, of course.
* snickers *

Side note - It may account for why Scotland has the highest proportional population of redheads in the world at about 13%.  And could potentially explain why most of the Red Head’s Aren’t Evil/Vampires research comes from there.

ps - 13% is heaps.  I'd keep an one eye open when I sleep if I were you and on that number - when we reach, sorry, what I meant to say, when *it* reaches critical mass at 15%, we're going to take over the world openly instead of just running things in the shadows as we’ve done for centuries ...  hehehe

Actually, no, not really, I'm just messing with your head now!  Maybe ...

Yes, but what -kind- of capacitor?  And what are the resistor values?  (No running off to a chart!)

* shuffling sideways to a chart .... *

So much for the note.  Bravely, I googled images of capacitors - it's safe for work unlike K's recent attempts (as a side note) - and then I wikied tantalum capacitor to be sure.  So I'm going for tantalum capacitor, solid electrolyte epoxy-dipped style aka the tan blob type capacitor.  big_smile

I hope I get an A for effort, all bonus points owing and usually I would insist on chocolates, but given a recent conversation in the medieval/fantasy/magic forums I'm not going to risk a huge misunderstanding and will just ask for a cold beer instead.  smile

Is the 3-way pigeon flasher part of the off-hook alarm setup?  And what is the ETA for it?

Red is reserved for true danger
Sounds good.  Actually, sounds pretty good.  I'll give you that!  smile

I'm just going for bonus points straight.  Capacitor.

To its left is a row of 5 resistors (they have stripes).  The stripes mean something.  Is used to determine the resistance in ohms.  Easy enough to do with a handy chart.  It's a zig-zag on a sketch.

Note to njc - If I get this right, this is not to be seen as a challenge to come up with even harder questions!  smile  If my electrical/electronic knowledge were a colour, it would be bright-red!  wink

Ok, so here's my opinion.  Possibly very unromantic for an aspiring romance writer.

I think love is a decision.  That first awareness/prick of interest in someone else is probably more curiosity to get to know that person better and an acknowledgement you like what you see (lust if you want).  The better you get to know them, and the more you like them, the more you fall in love (the opposite is also true, the more you don't like them, the less likely it is you'll fall in love).  Emotions are definitely involved, but I think we don't give enough credit to the conscious decision that's being made to love another person.  When you fall out of love (or, as I'd like to think, when you decide you don't love someone anymore), it will still hurt, but it's still a decision.

Personally, I've hit really low lows in my marriage at times (luckily, not often).  But despite that, I decided it was worthwhile to work it out than give up.  Lust isn't nearly strong enough to overcome storms like that.  Speaking of lust, you also need that spark to keep things going, but you need more than that.  Sometimes you decide not to go on depending on your principles and beliefs.  For the same, the other person in the relationship could also decide to give up.  And for love to work, it needs to come from both sides.  One person's love isn't enough.

So I guess people could (decide to) love more than one person at a time.  And as Janet said, you eventually have to do something about it, it's not sustainable.  Someone is going to get hurt, if not all involved.

And for sure, you can lust after quite a few persons at a time (so I've heard, I'm too tired and don't have near enough time!).  smile

But I think as with everything else, it's different for each person.

This is absolutely based on romantic love.  Love for your kids, pets, parents etc. is different.

claddagdragon, not sure who your question is aimed at?  If me, nah, my life is way too boring.  That's why I write!  wink

njc, if true, that story just boosted my confidence in mankind's intelligence and will to survive.  I can sleep peacefully tonight, knowing we have a chance with winners like that.

* I'm referring to the repairman of course *

I feel like I'm riding around on a kids-ride-on-trike (for 1-2 year olds) while njc and K are out on monster trucks.

I'm working on my official excuse, the one I have for now is totally lame and in the lines of "great minds yadida-yadidadiya ..." i.e. I just know what amy means and don't need crutches or hints or bones, not even tiny ones.  * sigh *

One day when I grow up I'll also get to ride in a monster truck ...  but for now, all I can do is try and strive for greatness.  * nods head assuredly *

njc, good luck with getting those gremlins back under the bridge.  I haven't done it yet, otherwise I would've tried to help.

Do I get a "well-done" sticker if I recognised a resistor or two?  smile  But I'm looking forward to the day when it's all done and working.

What's the problem with red?  * warning, I might be bias towards the colour for good reason *  wink

Oh dear, I have failed miserably LOL But no, Agnes would need a hip replacement first before she can sit on a guy's lap like that! ps - those days hip replacements were not available yet, so lucky for Matthew hahaha

You've got the right maid, but Agnes hasn't been asked to produce Matthew or Anthony? She was the one that had to inform C that Anthony had been out drinking instead of doing what he's supposed to like sorting out his tenant's problems and shit. But that chapter together with Ch1 is up for a major rewrite, so next revision will look lots different. Agnes will unlikely survive, unless she starts playing a bigger role than packing bags. In an earlier chapter she wasn't much help to C before her wedding day either, but that has also changed completely.  In any case, I had no idea she came across as conniving, I was going for motherly!

No... I meant Agnes the conniving maid who had the audacity to not produce Matthew upon command.

Site is playing up, can't add comments from my computer but on my phone I can. In any case, K, are you referring to the maid that got touchy feely with Matthew? If so, that happened at Aiden Tower and lucky for M and the maid C was nowhere near.

I should check drawings more carefully.  I don't think there is any, although, it must have a switch?!  I don't know what these are (o-- [a solid line with a circle at the end]), but looking at it again, I don't think it's switches as per my original inspirational thought.  A switch has two circles with a "skew" line between?

BTW, this is testing me and probably summarises the extent of my electronics knowledge!  smile

Hi Sol
This would probably be way down your priority list, but here is my suggestion anyways.  I don't think it should be difficult to add a "LEAVE REGULAR REVIEW" shortcut/button next to the "LEAVE IN-LINE REVIEW" at the top of the review page (just below the "ADD TO READ LIST" button).  As it stands now, if you want to leave a regular review, you have to scroll down all of the posted writing to get to the end.  Sometimes you can use the "go to the bottom of the page" keys on your keyboard, but it takes you to the bottom of the reviews, not the posted work, the only difference then is you have to scroll up again instead of down.
If you could keep this mind, it'd be much appreciated!
Thanks
Janet

If you want to cut and paste, regular review is the way to go.  With the feedback box to the right of the chapter, it's already a huge improvement compared to the old site.  I've tried in-line reviews based on glowing recommendations from other reviewers, but I've gone back to regular reviews again.  Only because it's a personal preference because it suits my style and it's WAY less clicking to get through the review.

The wonderful thing about the new site is, now we have a choice.  This is however purely from a reviewer POV.  From a writer's POV, in-line reviews can be a blessing or a pain.

njc, you look real organised, love your filing system!  hehehe  But organised or not, I'm pretty sure you know exactly where everything is!  smile  I haven't noticed a soldering iron ...

But otherwise, it seems like you've thought of everything!  smile

Flattery will get you anywhere, including out of a circle of daft crossbow archers, especially when you compliment them on the length and quality of their arrows!  wink
