Topic: Any ideas

Hey everyone

If you have any ideas we can discuss, please let me know!  The only one I have for now, is to have a discussion on 50 shades, whether you've read it or not.  So if you're game, I'll start a thread to get some opinions on that!

Thanks
Janet

Re: Any ideas

We sort of already hit the love vs lust thing. I'll send a private message.

50 Shades sucked as far as the author's talent, but she's $75 million richer!

Re: Any ideas

I started 50 shades and didn't get very far. Years ago I might have been interested enough in the subject matter to plod through, but now all I see is the atrocious lack of editing.

Re: Any ideas

I didn't even make it through the third chapter of the first book in 50 Shades.  Pretty poor work, but it must have hit some chord somewhere as the series garnered a potful of money.

How about a discussion on "the most unusual setting" for a romance novel?

Re: Any ideas

Before I began to write and learned the craft (well, still learning), I read 50 Shades and loved it. After learning what I know now, I went back and re-read it, noticing all the issues. What EL James did well was make the story compelling. Wright, wrong, or indifferent, she pulled the reader in that didn't know what she wrote was full of errors. The readers became passionate for the characters. It sparked a flame through word of mouth and sold like hotcakes. I only hope that my story will be as compelling.

Re: Any ideas

I read the first book, and then spoilers for the others because I hate not knowing endings but didn't want to invest time in reading the others. They were just way too long, and frankly after one disgusting sex scene I wasn't interested. I'm not a prude, but just because the word men can be found in menstruation, it doesn't mean I want the two to go together.

Re: Any ideas

I think I managed two chapters of the first book from memory.  The writing to me was as if a teenager had done the writing and I just couldn't connect with the heroine.  I mean, she was impressed by a twenty story building.  Then falling into his office was a little too much as well.  And from there on I just couldn't.  I doubt the author could care less, but if she worked it on a site like this, it would've been also about the writing and not only the sex.

Oh, and not to mention a self-made billionaire under thirty, with a perfect body and what not else.  VERY realistic.

And thanks for all the great ideas!!!  I'll get started on the first one this weekend.  smile

Re: Any ideas

I have question. What if a person could be in love with two people at the same time? Not lust or sex, just truly in love.

Good suggestion - will take it on next weekend!
Thanks!

Re: Any ideas

I will respond to claddaghdagron's question. I think it's possible for a person to be torn between feelings for two people. That person will eventually have to make a choice because the divided heart can never be complete. Forcing that choice could result in the person walking away from both. Better to have a whole, empty heart, than one that is in pieces. I also think it's possible for a person to always have a piece of their heart to belong to their first love. I just hope nobody misunderstands this a being unfaithful in a relationship. These are not thoughts about sex or lust, but the heart. Even the Bible in Jeremiah 17:9 says,  "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

Let me recommend: 'The Lions of Al Rassan' by Guy Gavriel Kay.

To your question, I would say 'yes', but it has to be managed with care when crafting a story. And also, as Janet T pointed out, sooner or later a choice often has to be made.

I think this will be a fun discussion & look forward to seeing that thread. smile

Re: Any ideas

Ok, how about we try a bit of romance workshopping around here?  If you have any ideas for a fun exercise, either post a new thread in the group or let me know if you'd rather someone else flesh out the details?!
