Hi all,

I wanted to start a thread on the best book marketing tactics. What have you done that has worked well. I'll start. In marketing the books that WorldMaker Media published we found purchasing Facebook advertising to be very effective. When we did it, we saw a definite spike in sales. This translated into a higher Amazon Sales rank which led to more exposure, a higher rank, etc. It became a virtuous cycle.

We also found advertising on some online publishing sites to be effective. In this case, we own and operate Booksie.com so we put the ads up there and also saw an increase in sales which translated into a higher Amazon Sales rank.

The bottom line was that anything we could do to increase the Amazon Sales rank helped. As the publishing world knows, starting off with a blitz is better than a lower level, steady stream of advertising. It's best to get a book onto some list and let that exposure catapult the book even further.

I'd be curious to hear what others have done that has proven effective.

Strange things are definitely afoot here. If I am at any other site, or doing anything else on my computer, my keyboard is just fine. But, on this site, there are periods of time that some keys (they seem to occur at random) will fail. I hit them, but nothing shows up. Just doing this post, the "v', "c", Enter, and "e'" keys failed on me. If I highlight the text I've already done and copy it. I can refresh the page, paste back, and all the keys are back working just fine. Sooner or later, another few keys begin to fail.
Is the site editor at fault? Are you filtering for special keys or something?

It could be the editor doesn't use one, so it's not related to that. The forum just uses a text box. I think this is something more specific to your computer or browser. What browser are you using?

Something is happening here.  I sent a message yesterday that went through eighteen times.  Then the site went completely unresponsive.  I had to leave the site, and come back again to do any work.

Okay. I'll look into it.

Hi, Sol--I have a message that won't go away.  I reviewed a work, and the work was taken down before I got to read the author's response.  So the link to the reply goes nowhere, except to tell me the work has been removed.  But I still have that red button on my home page telling me I have a review reply, and I can't find a way to get rid of it.  Is it something I can handle?  If so, how?  Thanks.

We will look into this case. I realize this could happen and we'll get a fix for it.

Hi all,

We released a major change to the points system today based on your feedback. Now, once you post content using points, you can post it to any other points group without having to pay additional points. This means that you only pay points once.

If any group moderators want to change their No points groups to Points with this change let me know. The reason to do it is if you want to make sure that users who post to your group have paid points at some point for the content they are posting.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi all,
Welcome to the group! I'd like this to be a place where we can share the tips and tricks of marketing and promoting published books, short stories, and more. As a publisher, I have launched over 10 books, including one that made it to the Amazon Top 100. I look forward to learning from everyone else.

Hi SquarePeg,

I think this is a great conversation. It spurred me to create a new marketing group. Would you like to move this conversation over there? I think it would be great to get some discussion going around these marketing topics.

Thanks,
Sol

He covered it...You can edit up until the deadline when the judging starts.

Correct.

The functionality now exists so that group moderators can launch writing contests or challenges for their groups. For now, the moderators will have to send me the details and I will upload it into the group. Once that happens, members of the group can enter the contest/challenge, just like the Strongest Start or the 7-Line poetry contest.

If a moderator wants to launch a contest, please include the following:

- Contest start and end date.
- Contest description
- Prize (doesn't have to be monetary and there doesn't even need to be a prize).
- Theme
- Any other contest requirements.

Thanks,
Sol

Hi Karin,

I see that your account did renew today. Try logging out and then logging in again. That should solve the problem. I'm also going to find out why this problem cropped up. Let me know if it doesn't resolve.
Thanks,
Sol

Yes.

Good question. I'm not even sure. I'll have to find out smile.

This is fixed. Sorry for any inconvenience it caused.

I see it. It looks like a bug. We'll get it fixed asap.

Hi all,

Today we did a new release today that includes some fixes for iPad users. The most prominent should be how the text editor responds. The editor should now scroll on the page and it also should not display some of the erratic cursor behavior. If iPad users could take a look and let me know if those problems are resolved, that would be great.

Thanks,
Sol

It will be enabled when your renewal period occurs - tomorrow. Let me know if you have any questions.

Yes, we can look into this.

They won't lose their review if you leave some of the first part. The review will stay with that first part.

I need someone to review my manuscript Solstice Sacrifices.

To get people to review your work, you need to review other writers. Either use the point system or spend some time reading and reviewing. The members on the site aren't going to read your writing if you don't show you will reciprocate.

It also seems that publishing a chapter when several chapters already exist requires adding up all points for every chapter (rather than those points only for that one chapter) to publish.

If you are moving a book from a non-point group into a point group, then you must have the points to do it. The other way to do it is to start a new, point version of the book.

Our ISP had a problem this morning that brought the site down for about one hour. We apologize for the inconvenience.

We have a contest for the book writers in the Group but we didn't want to leave out the poets. So, here's announcing the 7-line Poetry Contest.

Good luck!

"You further agree not to utilize the Site for the purpose of advertising or solicitation without the express prior written consent of theNextBigWriter,..."

Using Kickstarter or some other crowd-funding site has become a legitimate way to raise money for various projects. I assumed the group's members could discuss and determine if they wanted to contribute or not. I have often seen requests on the forum soliciting support for a newly launched book, or asking for a review on Amazon or some other effort to help a member's book project.

I gave permission for Mikira to post something about her campaign on the site so this did not violate the site's terms and conditions. The clause in the member agreement really refers more to soliciting an unrelated business or a competitive business and not actual writing produced on the site.
