Topic: gone, but not forgotten

Damn, damn, damn! I accidentally erased my whole book! I've spent the day trying to retrieve it, but the software isn't letting me see the files, it just tells me they're retrievable. I have to stop before I erase the whole confounded computer in the trash bin. My only recourse is to copy chapter by chapter from tnbw. Gah!

Re: gone, but not forgotten

i've had to do that. and i lost half a novel completely. good luck. many computers will automatically make a backup of everything. ask the resident brainiacs here.

Re: gone, but not forgotten

This is why I back everything up to an external harddrive, to One Drive, and to Dropbox. Lost a couple of chapters once. Not letting that happen again. Hope you're able to recover it.

Re: gone, but not forgotten

I agree with Bobbie. You must back up everything in One Drive, and somewhere else like Google Drive or Dropbox. should you need help setting it up, just ask.

Re: gone, but not forgotten

If you're on Windows 10, try going to "Backup and Restore". It could very well have backed up your latest works, but you have to tell it to retrieve them by doing a "restore". I think there is an option to restore to somewhere else other than the original location. That way you don't overwrite your newer stuff.

Using Windows 10, you can set up a task in the task manager to do an immediate backup whenever you insert an external USB drive.

I have my Linux machine set to do an incremental backup every 4 hours to an internal 2Tb drive.

There are some things best not admitted to.

Hope you're able to get things back!  I know the feeling as a couple of years ago, my computer died. Fortunately, everything was backed up except my WIP at the time but I was able to retrieve the chapters from TNBW. Now, I back up on a regular basis and keep my current WIP on two computers (desktop and laptop).

Fingers crossed for you!

JP:

Always store a copy (or the original manuscript) on a Google or Microsoft's OneDrive. Assuming the cloud never crashes, you're always good to go, no matter what happens to your own equipment. In addition, but that depends on how one prefers to write, I keep copies of all my handwritten materials: notes, links, as well as the manuscript itself.

Good luck reconstructing it all.

Re: gone, but not forgotten

That happened to me once with a chapter. Ended up rewriting the whole chapter and liked the results better. I do have my first novel only in print. Didn't back it up. Now, it just sits in my attic as I'm not going to rewrite it on the computer. I backed up my Ph.D. thesis at Kinko's.

I guess what I'm saying is bummer, but make the lemonade. Use this as a way of making your work better. And next time, back up per all those other suggestions.

I suppose I'm a fatalist. I was already unsatisfied with my work; I kept going back to tinker with it. Now I can get the bare bones back from tnbw, and make the improvements it needs. The universe just let me know two things: 1) I can do better, and 2) I need to back up my writing.

All I really needed was someplace to vent my frustration among people who understand. I got that.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I think they'll be helpful.  JP

Re: gone, but not forgotten

J P,

I'm so sorry. There is nothing I hate more than trying to recreate something I have already written once and then lost. It feels like scraping your brain with rusty metal. I save to three different hard drives, and also email my stuff to myself all the time. And I still lose stuff and have to re-write things. At least you have it stored here. Sorry for your bad luck.

Re: gone, but not forgotten

Sorry to hear of your loss, JP. It reinforces the need to revise the work on TNBW in addition to the source manuscript, so you’ll have a true copy always available. I had a backup external drive that made me feel secure - until I realized it had become disconnected months ago, probably when I took my desktop to the shop to be fixed!

Re: gone, but not forgotten

It's still in there. Lightning fried my computer a while back and I took it to a specialist and they retrieved everything. Don't know if it would be worth it if you can already recreate it, but just in case,  it is salvageable if it comes to that. Take care. Vern

Re: gone, but not forgotten

Sorry to hear this, J P. Well, even if you can't retrieve it, I'd encourage you to try and take it in stride. I know what it's like...yeah, it's a seriously bad hair...yet I'm confident you can do as well or even better with a rewrite. Still, I do hope you get it all back; that'll be much easier, of course.
Peace always,
Mike

Re: gone, but not forgotten

Hey JP, sorry to hear you're going through this. Similar happened to me years ago when the hard drive in my writing computer died unexpectedly. Like vern, I was able to get most of it recovered by paying a technician to do it.

That experience taught me the value of buying a small external hard drive that I used only for back ups of my writing files. I DID NOT leave it connected to my computer and only took it out once a week to perform back ups. To preserve day to day edits, I used a simple thumb drive which I would erase each week after a successful back up to the bigger external drive.

It's a laborious thing, but is the only safety net that's virtually fool proof. And thanks to the fire proof safe I bought, even if my home goes down in flames, my writing won't because that's where I store my external. smile

Edited to add: the reason I stopped keeping my external connected to the computer was I ALSO had an external hard drive go bad once too from keeping it connected and 'on' all the time. They also don't handle power surges well either.  Safest bet, connect--back up files--disconnect and store. Personally, not a fan of cloud services for storing writing. None of those services are guaranteed to be there forever.

Re: gone, but not forgotten

Thanks, guys. I got my tnbw copies back to re-edit. You're right, John. I used to edit regularly on site. Will have to go back to it.   JP

Re: gone, but not forgotten

Of course, now that you've solved the problem, I chime in. My Word, which is associated with Microsoft 365, a subscription service, saves all my stuff to a cloud. You might look into that. I live in fear that something might happen to this site...zombie apocalypse, maybe...and I'll lose everything. Having it on a third storage site that is independent of TNBW and my computer is an added layer of protection.
Here's the link...take a look and see if it's something you might like: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microso … 26153123:s
