Re: Welcome

A potential issue:

It seems like it would make more sense to have "moderator" appear on someone's forum title only in the group where they actually are a moderator. Then there will likely be less confusion. I used to receive emails from new members with questions about TNBW at the old site -- technical questions they wanted fixed, etc -- simply because I'd started The Shred Thread and had "moderator" next to my name throughout the forum. They thought that meant I worked for the site. I foresee this being even more confusing at this new site, given how many groups there will be. It may be self-explanatory, but I thought I'd point it out.

For example, I see that Mrs. Piddles is listed in this group as a moderator, likely because she started a group on writing for children & young adults. I'm a new member, so I'm going to go Quickie infiltrate her with questions about my account and such.

Could get old! And confusing.

Only my thoughts.

Yes, I agree. I think we'll probably remove the designations entirely as it's not so easy to make moderator only appear for the group in question.

Re: Welcome

Good to see things up and running after the long winter, lol. I seem to have trouble uploading a cover for my book. It finally uploaded on the beta site, but now it won't upload again since it was erased when the new site came on line. I'll keep trying. Also along that line, I never could get the title, fonts, colors, etc. to work with the cover. I won't create covers for all my works, but I hate to have to resort to the default cover or no cover for those I wish to emphasize. Take care. Vern

Are you having trouble uploading the image file? If so, send it to me and I will take a look. In terms of the titles, make sure the Title flag is set to yes. Otherwise, you can upload the image but no title will be created on it.

Re: Welcome

I think you can change this yourself if you go to edit your profile. It might take a few minutes for the change to propagate across the site.

The old site is up but very slow right now. We'll be fixing it next week.

Re: Welcome

I left a review (yay!) but I saw no notification that I had received a comment in response. I happen to look in my review folder and noticed the author had left a comment. It also seems everyone can see these author review responses?

Am I missing something? Or is it we have to do abit of searching to find review responses?

But apart from that -love the inline reviewing, it suits my review style. I had no idea!
And also I love the mini group forums (so cute) big_smile

Want to add, I'm always using the iPad for this ( unless I have to post written work) so far iPad has been great for reviewing

Re: Welcome

Lou, go from the menu to reviews, then select in line posts to see a response for your review.

Re: Welcome

There is a bug with seeing review responses so that could be a reason you aren't seeing it. We'll have it fixed next week.

Re: Welcome

Thanks Susan and Sol. That's great
I just assumed there would be a pop up notification similar to the Connection Request which I had been seeing. Because I assumed this, I was waiting without realising I had to be searching for it.

Re: Welcome

There should be a notification. There will be one next week.

Re: Welcome

Sol, take a deep breath.  Starting a new website is like warming up for the race.  The warmup is the time where you get loose and ready for the real competition.  Then the race starts, and everything gets crazy as people interact more.

That said, here is an idea for making this website stronger.  Your color and type-face choices are harder to read than the previous bold type of the old website.  Since a large portion of your clients are over the age of 50 (Shuffles feet and looks around...no not me, uh-uh.), consider having a streamlined site for the vision impaired.  Use bigger/ darker type, delete the shelved book option to eliminate clutter, and keep the forum concept.  All you would have to do is make a starter link on the sign-on page from the home page with the moon picture.

Easy for me to say since you've worked on this for a million years and now I'm worse than a back-seat driver by bringing this up now.  But I can see this idea paying off in spades.  Just something to think about.

You don't even need a link, just one or more options in the user's profile.  I think that would be the more confentional way to do it, anyway, and it could be implemented with a CSS control instead of whole new pages.

We'll create an all link version of the user profile for those that don't like images.

Re: Welcome

What's up with the limit of 5 groups you can join with Premium membership? Seems like a small number, especially given the fact that 2 of these are taken up with "TNBW free" and "TNBW Premium." Am I the only one wondering about this? Gray

Agreed. Seem to me it should be 5 in addition to the "Premium" and "Free", at a minimum, and perhaps more than that for Premium members.

Re: Welcome

The disadvantages to using a separate page link for the condensed version are that you need two copies of each page and you need to keep them both up to date, that if I pass a link to a page to someone else it will be condensed or not as my choice, not as the other users, and that I will need an extra navigation action when I come in.  A per-user setting interacting with the stylesheets would need to have none of these problems, although its feasibility depends on how complex and how organized the stylesheets are.

Re: Welcome

I have a question - could someone tell me how do I find new/ any fantasy or historical stories that people are working on?
I might be missing some way of searching sad

Re: Welcome

Hi LouLou,

Well, I have a Fantasy book in progress ...2/3 finished (Death Watch). But more to your point, I, too, have not figured out how to do a search for genre postings other than to go to a group that might be centered around Fantasy. If I figure something out, or someone tells me, I'll get back to you. Good luck with your writing!

Re: Welcome

Ah I see. Thankyou both for that. So unless you post to a group and in some cases, ( if the author has chosen) can only be seen by group members, your work won't be seen?
There is no way of searching for genre stories?
How can I browse the genres without going to or relying on groups?

Ok so I think I search the genres within the 'classic' ?
I think that's what I had been missing

It's ok. I think I will review one book at a time. big_smile big_smile
But I do like to lurk

Edit:
I did a search for fantasy on the classic group, in the Content folder, but there was no new content. Haha. I guess there's no new fantasy posted? Shouldn't it show new chapters?

Edit: 2nd
Ok I was searching under Book which revealed nothing. I did not know I had further options I had to scroll to (maybe cuz I'm using iPad?) it's got to be novel. How weird? I guess book is work that is published?

Sorry for ponderous spam-babble. Perhaps it will be amusing  tongue because it's  driving me crazy!

Hi Sol,
Not sure if this is where I bring this up...but is there a way to see all the in-line comments at one time for a chapter? One thing that was helpful on the old site was the ability to print in hard copy the comments. They help when editing starts. Just curious.
Love the site. Well worth the wait.

This is doing my head in.  When I was reading feedback on an in-line review I've done (and yes, I was actually able to find it!), I happened to go back to a one-liner to remind myself what I've said, and low and behold, you can leave individual review feedback for each one-line nit as well as overall review feedback!  WHY?!!!!!!!   Honestly, there is no way I'm going to check each and every one one-liner I've added for feedback comments, it's already too much, my mouse is glowing red-hot from all the clicking as it is.  Unless it pops up instead of needing to be clicked on each and every time or as Ann suggested, you can view all the in-liners at one time, I'm going to miss it (this is for the actual review and the feedback on the review).

And I can not stress enough how much I agree with Ann here.  The in-line reviews are great when you're reviewing, but I see a lot of pain in my future to incorporate all those nits if this doesn't change.

Re: Welcome

Hi, I'm new to thenextbigwriter and I am just getting the hang of things, up until recently I didn't have the confidence to publish my work. I now have it on two other sites and the response I've been getting is great. I'm a shy writer, and person.

I love to read all genres, so I will gladly review any bodies work, I may not be able to help with grammar and spelling but I can give my honest opinion on the plot, characters, and general flow of the work. So if you have any suggestions for me to read, please just send me a quickee.

Re: Welcome

Hi Michael.
I am working on a memoirs/fiction novella:  INCEDULOUS JOURNEY.  All feedback would be greatly appreciated.  thanks!
