as a Jedi, I think you can probably despise the film on principle without actually having to see it...

I've not even STARTED on yours yet, Norm. I had a quick look and thought I was too unworthy...
and as for Mama's death... did you ever watch M. Creosote from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life? Possibly the grossest thing I have ever seen (and I still can't watch it...) But he explodes in the end, so all's well I guess...

I looked at Scrivener once, but couldn't get my head around it. I just write all in one document now, in LibreOffice or Word, then save it into the Dropbox folder on the computer. That uploads it to Dropbox automatically, and I also save to an external Hard Drive every week. I rename and save the main file each month, or if I am making major revisions to a finished part, so I don't lose the old writing. I have files upon files upon files.... all triple backed up.

You are writing the catholic version of the Hitchhiker ‘s Guide to the Galaxy
so long as he includes the Restaurant in the Sistine Chapel I'll be happy.

NJ you are confusing knowledge with belief.
I know plenty, and, should I wish - unlikely - to write about any religious group, that is what research is all about.

There's a huge structure of logic tying it all together. It's called theology and has been the source of disagreement and even war. Though the war usually resulted when someone wanted to throw it all away and start over from a 'simpler' base. That same urge has 'informed' our politics for some decades now.
Personally, I don't find any logic. But I'm not a believer.

and the complexities of the Resurrection etc are the foundation stones of faith, aren't they? It doesn't matter if it follows logically or not, you just have to believe. If you don't, well, you aren't a believer, are you?

No, the Catholic forum states that Christ was taken up body and soul, which is how will return. Ditto for the prophet Elijah. If Christ had been taken up in spirit only, there would have been a dead body to bury, which wasn't the case.
ah, I had always taken the Ascension to mean that he had been taken up body and soul, but his soul was the only bit that would return. But I was brought up CofE, and it is a LONG time ago since I went to Sunday School.

Yes. Thomas wanted physical proof, although one supposes Jesus could be physical without still being flesh, but that's splitting hairs. There are other verses that I found recently that suggest he is spirit. In 1 Peter 3:18 it says that Jesus was put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.
But Peter was writing after the Ascension, so by then Jesus would have only been spirit.

Kdot wrote:I'm far from an expert in Catholicism, but I do believe they teach in rapture like we do (we all have different names for it) which implies "...Christ in the flesh..." is technically implausible.
You had me looking for an alternative to "in the flesh". Turns out, he's still flesh and bones, in spite of being transfigured and resurrected:
"Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” (Luke 24:39)
wasn't that the point of Doubting Thomas? That he wouldn't believe Christ was flesh until he put his hand into Christ's side, where the legionnaire had speared him?

Re: How to Breathe Underwater (trilogy: Lessons in Skills for Life) (197 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
Hi Norm.
How advanced technically is your story's society? Are we talking like Lord of the Rings (e.g., knifes, axes, bows and arrows, etc.)?
It is a world that has three distinct societies.
The Skilled
These societies, Tower and Liberty, are run magically.
Technical advancements are down to the imagination of the Creators. The Far-Skills, Speaking and Jumping, are used in preference to mechanical means of distance travel or speech. Skills do take energy from the Skill-user, so are used judiciously to avoid exhaustion.
However, the emphasis in these two areas is very different, and they are in continual conflict.
Tower; a harsh, black and white society, based on military rigidity. The martial skills, Artillery, Persuasion and Coercion, are most prized. The artisan skills, Creation and Healing, are necessary, but are provided by lower grade staff.
Liberty; colourful, artistic, hedonistic. Skills are used for pleasure seeking as well as for practical use. Even practical uses are expected to have some artistic value. Creation is therefore the most highly prized Skill. Artisans and artists are equally valued in society. Liberty is becoming jaded and aimless.
Non-Skilled
The Edge was originally the refuge for the Non-Skilled, but is now an ascetic conclave of people who refuse to use Skills for everyday life. They believe that imagination and creativity only thrive where life isn't given to a person on a plate. There is technology, but it is dependent on being hand made, or made by machines that have themselves been hand-built, so equivalent probably to life in the 18th/19th centuries. The use of Skills in the area is punished. Because of the difficulties of proving Skill use, they use Enforcers from Tower to prove guilt.

Time is precious to us all, I fear all the time that my novel will not be finished before I am. Fingers crossed you get lots of lovely time for writing and chatting with us. I missed you.

Re: Lights - the novel (new project) (10 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
nonetheless, it does need tense tweaking, which I am doing now. Once it's done I'll revise the chapter. Be grateful for any once-overs you might care to help me with then. Here is fine if you've already reviewed.
In fact I have totally changed my mind, and now find it pretentious and ugly. So it's going into present tense. Let me know what you think later

Re: Lights - the novel (new project) (10 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
I'm getting a lot of comments about the use of future and present tenses in the first chapter of Lights. I am not sure how to explain that this is written as though it is a tour itinerary, so for example, this was taken from an online itinerary of a tour of India
Day

: Arrive
Udaipur
Today the group will travel to Udaipur visiting the Ranakpur Temples en route. The main temple is unforgettable and took 65 years to complete. It is one of the five holy Jain pilgrimage centers.
Udaipur is known as the Venice of the East as it is one of the most romantic cities in the world. It offers a lovely blend of lakes, forts, palaces, temples, gardens, and mountains.
Day

:
This morning the group will enjoy a city tour with a visit to the City Palace built on the bank of Pichola Lake. The grand complex consists of several palaces with a blend of Rajput and Mughul influences. Half of the complex is still occupied by the royal family.
It is a blend of future and present, where the present tense is used for things that exist, and ARE. Future is used for what you will do when you get there. For those here who have kindly reviewed, does that make it clearer? The chapters through Ekaterina's POV are written in more traditional past tense.
Should I put this explanation at the beginning of the chapters?

currently, it isn't so spacey as that, more fantasy than Sci-fi. So in the same way, GRRM or Robin Hobb don't have much outer space happenings, neither does this world. So I need to make the differences more social, I guess, than environmental.

Re: How to Breathe Underwater (trilogy: Lessons in Skills for Life) (197 replies, posted in Fantasy/Magic & Sci-Fi)
Picking your brains. Wondering how to up the otherworldliness of the story, that feels too pedestrian still.
Any thoughts? I wondered as a first-off whether to have tattoos appear on the arms of the girls, indicating the various Skills as they learn them?
The whole thing still feels too ... lame...
