It should appear right away. I'll check it out.

Hi all,

We just launched a new flash fiction contest. Follow the link for details.

https://www.thenextbigwriter.com/writing-contests

More contests are coming...

Yes, we can do that. And we can even point to this thread. Good idea!

Hi all,

You've all been quite patient. I wanted to let you know we are going to launch the first of a few contests next week. We'll start with a flash story and then progress to poetry and then the Strongest Start.

This is why I have always hated the forums. It's why I minimized them on this version of the site.

Dill, don't leave on my account. If you really want a chance, join the Shred Group and disconnect from Premium. It will be like being on an entirely new site. But it's totally up to you as it is for everyone else.

Thread closed.

Makes me wonder why I didn't shut the forums altogether. Does anything good really come from them? All I see are threads that almost always descend into bickering and hurt feelings.

You can have your cake and eat it too if you desire to post in both groups.

This is correct.

Earlier someone commented that members may be fearful of expressing honesty or providing a good critique for fear of being removed from Premium.

I think all veteran writers can attest this is not what normally happens on the site. If you tell writers to give up writing or that their work is crap though, you might be told your reviewing style of more suited to the Shred Group. Either that or I will boot you off the site. But you'll be warned before any of that happens.

I don't know, this edict from on high has a "who cares" quality to it unless Sol is pursuing a radical change in the TNBW model, and this is the first step

What edict? Listen, there are some members who despite themselves have trouble communicating with novice writers. I know for a fact quite a few writers have left the site because they've received an overly harsh first review. Note that I didn't say overly critical. Many times it isn't malicious but rather a review style. If a reviewer feels the need to lay it on with everything they have, to pull a literary Simon Cowell, no problem, just do it in the Shred Group or they might receive a warning from me if I receive multiple complaints. If the reviewer persists in that behaviour then they'll either be invited to the Shred Group or you asked to leave the site. Easy.

But if you haven't heard from me, then you're doing fine. You can join the Shred Group or not. I don't really see the big deal.

It's important to note that we made a change to the points groups several years ago. Once you've paid points to post in one group, you can post it to another without needing any additional points. So for most people adding content to this group will require no additional points.

Did you mean in your comment that one posts directly here, but if I want to have that post more generally available post it in the usual, for me normal way? Would I start reposting the chapters I've already posted before?

You can post to multiple groups. If you want members of this group to be able to review your writing, you should make sure you also select this group when you post.. You can always go back and add your content to this group. To do this click the Publish tab from within the work, select the Shred Group and save.

One other point. Groups are not the only way a writer can receive feedback. If they have developed connections, reviews can be given through these connections.

In all the years the site has been in existence I've removed maybe 10 people. I don't like to do it and only do so after multiple warnings and thorough deliberation. I also have to receive complaints from multiple people and make a decision upon investigation. Not all cases call for removal. I realize some members are very helpful but they may also not have the sensitivity to review new members or those who are a bit insecure about their writing.  Should a new writer or one who has just plucked up the courage really have to be welcomed with a caustic, "honest review?" TNBW Premium is about providing constructive feedback in a way that doesn't undermine a writer's confidence. The old site had a code of conduct and it got lost in the transition but I'll be happy to bring it back and post it.

With the old site we could only have one type of behaviour since everyone was lumped together and needed to co-exist. With the current site this isn't a problem. New groups can be created where writers can spread their wings and review as they wish.

For those who want more biting reviews you are free to join the Shred Group. In fact, I encourage you to do so. I'd love to see this as a thriving group that provides those with thicker skins the ability to really sling the feedback. But if you're going to remain in Premium the feedback should be honest but also delivered in a considerate, positive way. For the most part, I think this is  how the Group operates anyway.

BTW - I agree that Ann and Marilyn should have honorary free membership and am going to make that happen.

Hi Jeff,

I'm not really clear what you mean. You can add comments to inline edits left by others, although two people can't inline edit on the same doc. But you can comment, vote inline edits up and down, etc. I haven't really seen a lot of demand for much beyond that.

What is the purpose of accepting or deleting inline edits? How would that work? Now you can mark if an inline edit was reviewed and used in the original document. What purpose do you see for accept or delete beyond that?

And coming soon to a forum near you [drum roll]
The The Ego Stroke Group Group
This group is for people who want to give and receive kind words aimed at encouragement even if there’s no hope.  Only post here if you are ready for banal platitudes and gold stars for participating. (Also great for credit hoarders.  50 words of empty, benign rhetoric = piles o’ points!)

Coming to a forum near you [drum roll]

A condescending member who takes shots at others without posting his own work. Who criticizes the sensitivity of others without putting themelves out there. Nice. Funny some would even say. But not long for this place I reckon.

Hi all,

I think the name of the Group says it all. Go at it.

If you want to receive reviews from this group, remember to also post your content to it.

So that still leaves the problem of reviewers leaving hurtful remarks in the other groups.  That's the problem that needs to be addressed.

That problem has also been resolved. If a reviewer simply isn't able to provide considerate criticism then Premium isn't the right group for them and they are removed from it. Once that's done, they cannot review new members, unless new members elect to join the Shred Group.

Hi all,
I've created a new group called The Shred Group for those who want total blatant honesty without any of the niceties or encouragement writers should be receiving in the Premium Group. Sometimes reviewers are great at pointing out flaws and helping a writer edit their work but not as diplomatic in how they deliver it. These reviewers still offer a ton of value for writers who have thick enough skins (most of us don't). If you are ready for this type of feedack, or feel like this is how you like to review, then this group is for you.

Yeah, some reviews have gone over to the dark side. I'm going to fix the problem.

Back in August of last year, you announced a contest for the next week.

Fair enough. I haven't posted a lot in the forum but I have been busy keeping the site running, working on new things, dealing with bugs, etc. But I do agree it is time for a new contest. We've had a large increase of new users lately so it's a good time. Anyone have any thought or suggestions? I have a few in mind but I'm open to better ideas.

Not sure what to say. I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Thanks, Jack! Please vote for TNBW and all of the great writers on the site who are participating!

Sol, on my short story "Special" it says I have 6 inline reviews (at the top of the page) but down below there's only two. Did the site mis-count or is there something going on behind the scenes, like drafts of inline reviews not yet submitted? Just curious.

That's strange. Let me check it out.

Hi Jack, I think it's a bug. We'll take a look.

Nothing? You don't have your own Blog you'd like to promote?

Can you pay a copy of the list on this site as well?

Of course.
