Re: Struggling with the new site (1 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I'm not sure what you mean by original response. Do you mean the author response to the actual review? If so, there is a box below the reviewer comment where you can leave your response. Unlike on the old site, you can edit these after they are submitted, so maybe that's what you mean by the update or edit response. That is the box for you to leave what I think you are calling an original response.
There are no threads by topic on the forum. It is in chronological order. We might be able to create a search feature.

Re: What is an in-line review? (8 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Basic)
If you're using a PC you can press alt-tab to switch back and forth among screens. This will help taking in-line review comments and incorporating them into a manuscript. We'll be adding other features soon to make it easier to act upon the feedback provided in in-line reviews.

Re: GREAT! I've written an invisible story twice (1 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I see your story but you haven't put any content into it or post it to any groups. Next week we'll be making some changes to the process that will alleviate some of these problems.
When you created the story, did you upload any content with it? It doesn't look like it. You also didn't publish it to any groups, which is why it isn't showing up. Here's what to do to fix both issues:
1. Go to portfolio and click on the title.
2. Go to the Content section. There, paste in the content of the story. Click the Save and Publish button.
3. On the next page (Publish), under Publish Settings, select TheNextBigWriter Premium. It will check to make sure you have enough credits and ask you to proceed. Click the button to proceed and then press the red Update Publish Settings button (next week this will all happen automatically).
Then you should be all set and your content will appear on the site.
Once that happens the process will be very similar to the old site.

Re: How do I create a reading list in the new site? (8 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Ack! Yesterday all my reviews were listed in chronological order, starting with the most recent. Now they're in a strange new order and I can't find any of the books I was reviewing. Can you please add a way to put them in a chronological order, or by dates, etc.? I don't want to wade through 15+ pages of old reviews to find the current ones I'm reading.
They are still in chronological order. They might have been working on them so temporarily have messed with the sorting.

Re: Shelving, what does it mean to you? (6 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
It's designed for three different things.
1. For work being posted on TheNextBigWriter, it's a vote of confidence in the work, like a Like. Except it puts it on your TNBW bookshelf so others can see what books on here you think merit being included on your shelf.
2. For books you have published it's a way to show them off on your page and promote them.
3. And for books that you have read and enjoyed, it's a way of showing other writers your tastes and what kind of reading you like to do.

Re: lost short story (2 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Basic)
Well, I think it takes some adjustment time. Most people got use to the old site and that's why it became easy. In the beginning of the old site, I received countless emails from people who were confused. Once you get used to this one, it will become just as easy. I'm sorry that you have to go through this but we are here to help.

Re: How do I create a reading list in the new site? (8 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Right now the reading list is at the book/novel level, not the chapter level. We'll be making some changes to the reading list to make it more usable as a tool to keep track of chapters. We'll also be rolling out some changes to chapters to make it easier.

Re: Writing Feedback (25 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
It appears that all postings were given a minimum back date of November 12th. So it cannot be ascertained how active content is prior to this date. Makes it difficult to review.
No, this is not correct. All original dates were maintained. There was a bug with dates which we have almost fixed in which if a person changed their publishing settings it would reset the date.

Re: Site Bugs (217 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I wonder now whether the version number change shouldn't either automaticly repost or provide an option to repost. The copy-paste operation is less reliable than changing the number and editing and I think I'm not the only one to get caught on this, choosing to move forward with edits on the existing base. The version control systems I've known for software always assumed that you declared new versions on edits rather than starting with a clean sheet of paper for each.
The option-to-repost suggestion moves this from bugs to potential future enhancements.
This would be ideal. Future enhancement.

I've been able to read inline comments made by other writers on someone else's work, too, so it's back to full time workshopping.
You can also comment on these inline comments.

Re: Time Lag and Cursor Bops (6 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Can't set up a group without weird codes popping up
Window pane doesn't scroll
Cursor bounces to the top
Can't edit content of chapters
Time lag from when a review comes in to when I can actually see it
No pop up on home page re reviews received (love this feature on my MacBook, btw!)
Okay, thanks. Most likely the editing of chapters will have to wait. The other issues I will check out. What version of iPad do you have?
Thanks,
Sol

Re: Site Bugs (217 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
But how do I give it the same chapter number? I want this to -replace- the old chapter.
Change the old chapter to version 1. Then publish the new version as chapter 2, version 2. Or keep as it and publish the new chapter as chapter 2, version 3.
As an aside, did you get the HTML/CSS that seems to show why italics aren't showing up here?
Yes, I received them thanks. I passed them on to the developers and the bug is in the queue. Thanks.

Re: Writing Feedback (25 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
HELP - Two issues, and forgive my lack of whatever. One; I published a new work today (first time using the new site) and the cover was auto generated. That's neat, BUT, due to the length I guess, the last word of the title did not show up on the cover. How can that be fixed?
This is a bug in the auto-generation system. We'll have to look at it. It will probably be a bit before we get to it though, just to set expectations.
Second; I received a review and wanted to reply. I found, at the bottom of the review, a place I can write something, BUT it says Edit or Update Your Reply. How do I simply make the original reply. I don't want to Edit or Update anything. Guidance anyone.
What type of review was it? An in-line? If you already replied, you have the option of editing that reply. Did you already put a reply? It would appear above the box you are referencing.

Re: Another question about groups (35 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Basic)
Since (as I understand it) free membership gets five groups now, and Premium ten groups, how will it be decided which groups a member can keep and which groups they can't if they drop to free status? Will it drop them from the latest ones they joined?
Not exactly. Premium members will get 10 groups. Free members will stay at three.
If a user downgrades, they can choose which three groups they want to keep.

Re: Site Bugs (217 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I've done those things. My update/revision 2 of chapter 2 of The Sorcerer's Progress Book 1 is not appearing anywhere. I was wondering if it's because I have to change my billing info (unexepected change in c-card info) but since you won't let me see that now I don't think that's it.
Is there a problem if I revise ch2 on the site w/out having done anything with ch1
I see it:
http://www.thenextbigwriter.com/content … /version/2
Because you technically did not re-post this as a new version, it still has the publish date of the original, which is October 16, 2013. As a result, it is way down the list. Just changing the version does not automatically repost. To repost, you actually need to repost as the new version, setting up a new chapter and copying the new version into it as you would any other chapter. Then you can publish. Otherwise, it's just an edit on the chapter.
It's similar to the old site where you can edit the content (which is what you did) which will not change it's posting date, and you can post it fresh with a new version (analogous to reposting on the old site).

Re: Time Lag and Cursor Bops (6 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I see someone started another thread about tablet bugs. I use my MacBook for writing and posting, but often move to my iPad just about everything else. (Tied at the hip, so to speak). Since so many of us use mobile devices, Id like to suggest more mobile-friendly interface after this huge round of site enhancements is done and things settle down a bit...
We actually spent a considerable amount of time making sure the experience was usable across tablets and phones. Just getting the in-line review system to work across iPads, iPhones, and Android devices was a chore. What do you see as not mobile-friendly about the interface?
Thanks,
Sol

Re: Tablet editing frustration (28 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Yeah, editing on a tablet or phone is not ideal. We've been experimenting with this a bit and may have some ways to make it easier. For now though, I would recommend posting and editing on computer.

Re: Site Bugs (217 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
It looks like points are taken for every group you post to. I almost hit Publish again, thinking I needed to do that
get the story to show up in the groups I selected-- but saw that it was going to take 31 points--I thought this my be wrong since I already had posted the story. I checked on this and found that I didn't need to publish again. This could be confusing, and you might get a few nasty-grams about folks who publish twice and lose points. Is there a solution to help the witless, like me?
Hi Ernie,
Points are charged for every group you select that costs points. If you post to one point group and three free groups, then you will just be charged for the one point group. The free groups (the ones without the coin symbol) don't cost anything to post to.
Hope that helps. We're looking at ways of making this part of the process a bit easier to understand.
Best,
Sol

Re: Site Bugs (217 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Sol,
I posted a story yesterday, and just followed the instructions. everything went well, and I thought I posted it in Fantasy and Science fiction. But I can't find it anywhere, except on my home page. How does this posting work? After I post, do I have to invite folks to review it? I thought when I selected the groups to post it to, it would should up in those groups it's "Beyond the Event Horizon." What did I miss? where did I go wrong?
Thanks.
Ernie
It looks like you didn't post it into the group. After you select the group, make sure you save the selection by pressing the red Update Publish Settings button. Just checking the group box will not automatically save it. To fix this, do the following:
1. Go to portfolio
2. Find the title and under Actions click Publish Setup
3. Find the group(s) you want to publish to and select.
4. Press the red Update Publish Settings button.
That should do it.
Let me know if you have other questions.

Re: Site Bugs (217 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I'm getting a few inline reviews that have nothing on them. I got one from KHippolite and one from Janet Taylor-Perry. I don't know if they were accidentally submitted or if they were real reviews and the review part got deleted.
It's possible the reviewer started, then deleted what they had started. If it's blank, just delete it. Let me know if it keeps happening though.
