Extended characters: The new software seems to take exception to valid characters outside the USASCII range.  I've been using Greek letters as placeholders and they are being turned into question marks.  For me this is a ruddy nuisance, but for people writing science fiction or anything technical, it could be a lot worse.   Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Zeta, Sigma, Kappa, Epsilon and the rest all have valid codepoints, upper and lower case, in the Basic Multilingual Plane.

Ok. Looking into it.

Edited to add: Hello, Sol, I'm just bumping this up and including your name since I'm thinking it might ring some type alert with your name in it; I say that because you've answered other posts since this one went up without your name specifically mentioned. Just playing the odds.

Hi Vern,

We'll add that to the list. Thanks,
Sol

We'll be looking into all of these over the next week. I'll have updates to report shortly.

The site needs to incorporate a feature independent of auto save that saves in process reviews and doesn't t post them until the reviewer is ready.

I agree. It's something we'll add over the next couple of weeks.

I noticed that if one wants to search for regular reviews to which they have/have not responded, there is a function to do so; I don't see the same function for in-line reviews, nor do I see any way to know which review you have responded to other than simply going through them and looking. Am I missing something?

There is currently no similar feature for in-line. We just upgraded the regular reviews section and wanted to make sure everyone liked it. We'll now do the same with in-line over the next week. There is a slight chance it could take a bit longer because we have a few other changes we are working on for in-line reviews and we may roll them all together.

Sol

I find it difficult to type in an extended comment. I can only use the space given in the text box. I can't scroll down, and the enter key won't take me further down.

We'll take a look at this and other iPad bugs and get them fixed.

If you have a problem, please provide very precise information on what the bug is. Loulou what you provided is a good level of specificity. Even more detailed information, like does this happen on every comment box or just certain ones is also helpful.

Thanks,
Sol

It depends on the group's setting. If the group's Visibility setting is set to No, then forum threads are not visible for non-group members and the general Internet. If they are set to Yes, as they are for TheNextBigWriter Premium and Free right now, then they are visible.

Have you fixed the take-off-points for edits?

That was fixed last week smile.

Hi all,

Over the past week, we've been doing daily releases of enhancements and bug fixes. Today, we released two oft-requested changes.

1. The groups limit for Premium Members has been increased from 5 to 10. It remains 3 for Free Members.

2. The regular review page has been modified based on your feedback to make it more table-like. You can view the new format here:

http://www.thenextbigwriter.com/comments

We have only placed this format on the Regular Reviews Received page for now. Once we receive positive feedback, we will roll it our on the Sent and then also work on the in-line review page.

We have a bunch of other enhancements under development for in-line reviews, publishing, and more. Stay tuned and for all our U.S. users, have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Cobber's account had a problem and I logged in (with his permission) to diagnose the problem. I forgot to log out and accidentally posted. Sorry. It happens sometimes smile.

1. The logo at the top right is the home button. This is specified in the Conversion Instructions and the overview video. It can be clicked on from any page.
2. There is no forum button so where would the forum button bring you?  On the old site you had to click a specific forum button but here you have the most recent forum threads on the homepage.
3. We'll look to add a print function over the next week.

On the nice-to-have list, versioning should have some way of filtering the list to only see one version at a time so as to avoid confusion between substantially different drafts. Also on the nice-to-have list would be the old reading list functionality (I know you're working on it), but with an automatic increment to the next chapter with the same version number. So, if someone is reading chapter 4, version 3, their reading list increments to chapter 5, version 3. Either that, or some easy way to see in the drop-down list which chapters someone has already read, so they know to pick the next one in sequence.

So, let me understand what you are saying. You'd like to be able to have two or three, or four different versions of your work up on the site and depending on which version a reviewer starts with, they would be pathed down that particular version automatically? If you want all versions live yet separate, I think the way you are doing it, with separate posted books is probably a superior solution.

*** Lastly, will I be able to change version numbers on all my existing chapters without incurring cost in points? My old v2 book has all of the chapters labelled v1, which is how they came across from the old site. I'd like to fix those to have the version numbers match the version number of the book.

You can change without incurring points.

I agree with JP Lundstorm that it'd be cool to have a feature allowing the author to see all the in-line comments together, for re-writing purposes, on top of being able to view them one by one as it is now.

Wer're working on this and more. Remember, this is just version 1. We have some big plans for this tool and a few other related review and editing tools.

Sol:
Talking about points, posting version 2 costs like posting a complete new chapter, am I right?
Kiss,
Gacela.

It's just like posting a new chapter.

Versioning allows you to post a new version of the chapter. So, for instance, you can have Chapter 1, v1 and Chapter 1, v2. Both can be active at the same time, or if you want you can deactivate v1. You'll still have access to it if it is deactivated.

It will say v2 on the content and you can add a note letting readers know this is version 2.

I would definitely give the version system a shot. If you have questions using it, let me know.

Sol

This is version 1 of the in-line review system. Rome wasn't built in a day and many of the features you see now will be built out further in the coming months. We didn't want to delay the site indefinitely as it already took too long to roll out. Thanks for your feedback.

Sol:
I'm very fond of my iPad as I believe anybody owning an iPad is. Are you planning to upgrade the site to a more iPad-friendly environment.
Kiss,
Gacela.

We've done a lot of work to make the reading and reviewing experience work well on tablets and phones. If that's not the case, let me know specifically where the problems lie.

In terms of editing and publishing, are users doing a lot of that on their mobile devices (tablets and phones)?

But I've just copy/pasted from a 'source' window, and I'm using that as my referrence for correction.

We've shortened the text box. This should resolve the problem.

Now, as to the real problem.  Since I'm fixing formatting, I need the formatting bar.  I adjust the main window scroll so it's at the top of the window and I start editing the content from the top down.  When I reach the bottom of what's visible on the window, instead of the editing canvas scrolling up, the whole ferstunk window content scrolls up, moving the editing controls off the visible window.

You should use the maximize window feature and that will resolve this problem for now. This is a feature on the text editor. We'll look into other solutions also.

Sol

Hi, nice idea for a group. I look forward to participating.

I can't get the in-line reviews to work. I haven't given one yet, but have received a couple. I see highlighted text, but no text pop-up box appears when I roll-over, or click on the text. I saw another person with the same problem--what is the fix?

Are you using Internet Explorer? If so, the easiest fix is to download Chrome or Firefox. If not, the second easiest fix is to turn off the Compatibility Settings on the browser. This was the problem for the other users. To do this, go to Tools and then find Compatibility Settings. Once you find it, click on it and then you should be able to turn it off.

If you are still experiencing problems, send me a Quickee or a PM.

Sol

Sol, under my portfolios->basic info, there is a button called View Public Content, which takes me to a screen that can access all of my chapters. Does that mean they are public on the net? I assume not, but the button label is confusing.

It is just a button to your content. The content is not available on the net unless you have selected that option on the Publish page. The "Choose who can see your content" indicator would have to be set to Internet. The default is for just groups and connections.

We will take the word public out of the button to remove the confusion.

Okay, I can get in by clicking on the link to new group posts from my front page, but if you go directly to the group and click on the "forum" icon for the group then you get the no permission message

You have to be a member of the group first before you can post messages.
