Justinian recovered from the plague. A third of the populace were not so fortunate. Every level of society, every section of the economy, every political or religious faction suffered. Farmers died and insufficient numbers of crops were planted. Harvests were small. Merchants died and shops were empty or closed completely. The harbor on the Bosporus held few ships and commerce slowed. There was little to send abroad and little to come in.
Prices soared for what little food was available.

Justinian’s desire to reunite the Roman empire grew stronger with each victory Belisarius achieved. In the year 545 Justinian ordered Belisarius back to Italy on a second campaign to drive the Ostrogoths out of Rome. Marus was part of his retinue.
When Marus was away from Constantinople the dreams faded. There were no reminders to stimulate horrible memories. He dreamed of pastures of wildflowers and herbs, gentle breezes, calming waters. Sophia’s unintelligible voice floated in and out just short of understanding. He strained to hear what she said, only to wake in confusion, clutching her now-ragged sleeping gown.
