The old house stood against the twilight, every window vacant. Sarah clutched her keys, the porch light a warm yellow flicker.
Her sixty-hour week weighed her down like lead. This place was supposed to be a refuge.
Inside, the air was thick with dust and the scent of forgotten things. A floorboard creaked, loud in the sudden, engulfing quiet.
“Hello?” she called, her voice a tremor.
Silence.
Then a whisper, right behind her ear, she felt a cold breath shift her hair: “You forgot your change.”
Sarah spun, keys dropping, but saw only the darkness swallowing the hallway.

This is very good. I find writing short stories really difficult and this is a great help in understanding the construction and conclusions you can make in such a limited number of words. I would love this to be part of a larger piece of work. I think you write horror really well.
