Re: Site Bugs 2
There it goes again. My review, when I posted it, told me I'd written 61 words. When I went back to look at the response, my post was listed at 57 words. Why the disparity?

Sol, would you ask your network gurus if TNBW uses jumbo frames, and if it knows when to back off and not use them? I sometime use a wifi network that stops delivering a page in the middle at certain times of the day, when 4G gets them through. Other pages come across fine on wifi, so it's some interaction between tNBW and the network and jumbo frames (I know, they have a newer name) come to mind because if they are broken into small frames along the way, congestion control just kills the flow. Sorry, I don't remember the RFCs, and they would be obsolete if I did.
njc, do you get a status message of the form "waiting for site to respond"? I get that with Chrome and TNBW, where the site appears to hang for as much as a minute. During that time period, opening additional tabs to the site all hang as well, although all my other tabs/sites work fine during that peiod.
This is probably unrelated, but I had Chase hang on me today (first time) and I tracked it down to a web traffic tracking service that Chase or Chrome or a Chrome extension apparently uses. I disabled all extensions and wiped all my cached Chrome data and managed to get past it. I'm not sure if it will clear the recurring problem I get with TNBW, though.

No, it's not. And this is in my smartphone. Browsers on the flaptop have the same slowdown-to-stop, and other web pages still get through, as on the smartphone, but the flaptop doesn't have 3G or 4G.
This is really getting out of hand, Sol. In three separate instances today, I was in the middle of an in-line review and blew myself out of the water, sending the browser back to the last page I visited (and worse, on one occasion), by not having the cursor put into the comment block when you highlight text to comment upon.
Having to explicitly click the cursor into the box is really a pain. #2 pain is not being able to float the box to the side so I can see text beyond what I'm commenting on.
~Tom
It would be nice if, when reading an ILR, the ESC key would banish the box so you didn't have to click on that tiny X. Of course, touchscreens, which suffer most of all, don't have an ESC key. Having the 'present' or 'next' block highlighted so you could move with arrow keys or tab/backtab and open the comment with a space would help, too.
Tom, on Google Chrome, when I've accidentally clicked the back button, I can hit the forward button and it takes me forward again, with the draft review still there (except for the latest comment box I was typing in). I'm not sure what kind of device/browser you're using, but I would expect other browsers would have a similar ability. Regardless, TNBW saves a draft of the review every time you add an inline comment.
It's a pain, but the only thing you lose is the current comment you were typing.
Dirk
Thanks, Dirk.
I use Pale Moon, which is a derivative of Firefox, and the add-on called Tab Mix Plus. I've setup the tabs so that if I leave a page, it will log me out. When that happens, I have to log back in to TNBW. True, the review is still there, but it is still a pain and can be avoided.

The use of the back/ forward buttons is inconsistent. I was happy to see I could use them, and did, but they don't work from every page. I gave up trying. Now if I have a lot to say, I have to compose on my own computer and paste to the message box, which still doesn't solve the problem, but at least I don't have to redo things. Till now, I've assumed it was a problem of my own. JP
On a regular review, if you inadvertently type a carriage return/ENTER in the subject field, the entire review is posted, empty or not.
This is probably not expected by the user nor intended by the web designer.

That has happened to me too. AND I lost the points because I didn't give enough words.

The new site lets you write a second review.
Okay! My message icon is missing. Help! It's in my drop down, but not on the top of the page. There is now ? in its place.
Hi, Sol--Are we having fun yet? What's that they say about a one-legged cowboy in a shit-kicking contest?
A new reviewer tells me he can't use the in-line review because he's a new member. Is that right, or did he get a glitch?
Since I mostly do in-line reviews, I'm happy to see that the review is saved automatically if I leave the page, whether it's intentional or not. But how the heck do we access it to finish the review? I have to navigate through several other pages to get it back. It would be great if we could punch that little red button (or is it orange? green?) to pop right back into the unfinished review.

Once again the editing problem hit me. I was filling in a regular review and my keyboard began either missing strokes or giving me multiple strokes as I typed. I immediately went outside my browser and opened a text window to finish my review. No problems typing at all. Then I went back into the text box and tried again - same results: dropping various characters no matter how definitively (read HIT) the keys, they wouldn't register. It is not my keyboard, it is inside an editing box.~Tommmm
(Case in point - this post. My "M" key gave me multiple "m's" and the "Return" key failed.)

I think this is still the case, JP, only premium members have access to in-line reviews and new members by default are not premium members, they have to upgrade.
edit - correct me if I'm wrong Sol!
I've posted 2 or 3 long reviews (400+ words) and the last parts of the reviews were truncated. Shorter reviews seem to be no problem. What gives? And, how can I make sure that complete review are posted in the future?
The complete review is still visible if I click back to the review page, therefore I know that the full review existed in the first place.
thanks - måx
Hi, Sol. I just got another email concerning your "Show versus Tell" class. Every one of them including this one, reports "Not Authorized". If I'm not authorized, why am I getting them?
~Tom
I have just tried to mass-delete a few old messages. Clicking the "check all below" box puts checkmarks into each of the listed messages on that page, but clicking the Trash Can (and answering the faded-screen pop-up with YES), none of them went away. They still remain. I am reduced to deleting each one of them separately and getting that blacked-out screen every time. A massive PITA.
Is this by design, or a bug?
~Tom
I am a member of several different groups. I usually post my manuscript to all of them at once by making sure the little boxes are checked. From time to time I have updated a chapter to reflect changes I have made after a review. However, I must be short cutting part of the process. I keep getting reviews back that show some the old mistakes I intended to correct. I would appreciate any response if you have some idea about what I need to be doing. This is an intermediate step. I will post an other draft later that can be re-review for points later.

There may be different counting systems in use. I'll have to look into this.

This has to do with your browser settings and how it handles a page. If it caches a page then you can go back, if not, then you may need to reload it. We use different technologies on different pages which is why the back button works in some cases but not in others. Depending on the browser you are using, make sure you are not reloading the page fresh on every page visit. That should resolve the problem.
Okay! My message icon is missing. Help! It's in my drop down, but not on the top of the page. There is now ? in its place.
We put a Help button in its place because the message icon was a bit redundant. You can access your messages from the drop-down under your pen name.

This is something related to your browser as I have not heard of any other complaints about this behavior or been able to duplicate it. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

New members have 7 days of Writing Membership (formerly Premium) to try the site and all of its features. After 7 days they become Basic members and do not have access to in-line reviews.
