You go get them! When you can, that is. We're also busy and have all kinds of things that get in the way, so we're an understanding bunch and there is no need to apologise.
I hope you get better soon!

OK. Keeping the fight with Griffon. Yessir!
I haven't read it (soon), but so far I have to agree with this - keep the fight (I could be bias wanting more Alda air time). I understand where K is coming from, but I don't think there is anything wrong with some of the threat already being eliminated - the threat of the Horror's creator is in my opinion the biggy, so if I've read about that "in a book", I'd say it's taking the easy way out.
(I could also misunderstand this whole thread ... it's never beneath me to be totally confused and clueless)
I got home from picking a few things (well, a few boxes of things) from my mother's effects at 04:10 and found a message on my answering machine. My apartment nightmare has just reawoken. I had a re-inspection by the landlord today, and I left word about arriving late. It's been moved to tomorrow.
I may be toast, and I need to get more sleep now.
What do you mean ... toast. It doesn't sound good at all njc. Is this because you have extra boxes around from your mother? Speaking of your mum, I can't type my exact thoughts regarding the timing of this re-inspection ... honestly, consideration and understanding are really scarce these days. Will a month or so really make such a massive difference? Your idiot landlord is on my list of people I don't like a lot as in don't like AT ALL.
You review all of K's attempts to match your skills at writing sex. You have a reviewing niche. If you want, I'll go into the list of why I enjoy your reviews. I just haven't thought that you needed that. The fact that I'm your fan should speak for itself.
A
Once I'm done with Rocket Baby, unless Alda and Tazar get busy, my "niche" will not be needed around here so much. *sad face* But I'll come up with something, don't fear! Something just as cool as making people cry (but not my #1 fan)! *happy face*
Seriously, you're not wrong - I don't need that list (maybe one day, but not yet). But I still appreciate this! And right back at ya!
Fan, did you see that K?! *sticks tongue out to K*
You write about sex, Janet. You absolutely have a niche.
LOL, I was more referring to my reviewing niche ... but I'll take this! *high five*
I think any newcomers reading this will be slightly worried about being pounded hard, reduced to tears and or pushed into a fit of rage ... LOL, thanks for making it so much easier for the rest of us to look like the "nice guys" around here *grins an evil grin while searching frantically for my own differentiating factor*
In the next few days, I plan to catch up on a passel of reviews and do some badly needed fixes on early chapters.
After that, I have two big things to work on: Erevain's chapters, which are changing quite a bit, and the long-story arc, which you won't see immediately. Both Merran and Jamen will get some time studying with Kirsey too: Merran because she can use it and Jamen ... well, Kirsey will find some latent talents there. But there's a lot to do on the way.
I still have to finish the head-amp in the hope of selling the spare turntable, I've got two computers to get running again, and the other work will be never-ending.
Work. Whoever came up with that idea, needs to be shot. Dead. And then shot again. Dead-er. It keeps on interfering with my writing time and reviews ... and all the other stuff that's way more fun. Anyways, how old are the computers njc? Is it for your use?
Hah, well surely you see why I wasn't running parallel to charactrer logic.
I picture myself getting off the bus with a date... a couple pssts at me from an alley. "Hey guys, wanna swap clothes?" "Why?" "We commited a minor felony in ours and the cops might be looking for us"
Here's my thought process before turning to my date and saying "hell yes!"
1) This is pretty shady to start with.
2) I don't even know these people. What if they have bedbugs riding them.
3) Do I want attention from the cops?
4) If they're willing to deceive the cops, they must also be willing to deceive me as to the nature of the crimeIf the answer to all these questions is "don't care" then I will probably agree. If they fail any single one of these, I turn tail and run.
That anyone else might think differently would fascinate me
Agree wholeheartedly. Except:
5) Same clothes, different faces and other physical attributes (that should count for something?) "Surely mr. Policeman, it wasn't me, it's just a coincidinc (sic) that we are wearing the same clothes. We were waayyyy over there minding our own business when this hideous crime you are referring to happened."
6) We prefer some minor attention from the cops rather than the attention we're getting now ...
Then again, in fiction, it doesn't have to be possible beyond doubt, just possible even if very unlikely ... To me, it was just waayyy too easy to bump into two people who wanted to change clothes, but I can let it go on the basis it's very unlikely, but possible.
Just my 2 cents.
Bwa ha ha! I'm a machine!
I'm going with zombie ...
Oh, JANET!
You're two chapters behind now! :-)
And a short story ... grrrrrrr - I'm back to "normal" again, so I'll catch up soon enough. Went to play soccer today with my two boys. It made me feel really old instead of young at heart. And I'm going to discover all kinds of new muscles tomorrow - hurting ones. And I have to do my Australian taxes too, but I hope if I wait a little bit longer, hubby will do it when he does his and I can get another chapter of NS out .... If that doesn't make you go "sigh, true love", nothing will!
Thanks Vern. I kinda figured that would be the case with most. Just curious. Mike
If I had to guess, I'd say that it doesn't come down to the quality of reviews, but might change the number of revisions writers will put their work through before publishing?
See comment in the other thread about points, Dirk. And I totally agree with your last paragraph. Can't say I agree with your second paragraph. You have to read to post. Maybe those folks, like me read and post, read and post.
Janet, surely you read, write and post, read, write and post!
But in seriousness, I agree, take it out of my bank account. (And yes, I can afford this opinion as I review much more than what I use to post, so my bias may be showing but I do not apologise for this, because if you give good reviews, and get extra points as a reward, it will also make it easier to post your own writing -somewhat - sooner). [general comment, not specific too you Janet!]
Sending an occasional gift of points to someone isn't likely to run out of control, since it takes a lot of time to build them up. But I recently received two extraordinarily detailed reviews where the reviewers put in hours of effort. I would gladly read extra works to build up enough points to reward them from time to time, just as I read to get enough points to publish. If I know someone is new and trying their best to give a good review or trying to stay with me, I'd probably give them an occasional gift as well.
There are people who read more than they write (me included), so we've built up quite a horde. Once those are spent, however, the system equalizes for everyone and you have to read even more to get the points to give away. If someone is a prolific writer and puts up stories at five times my pace, and they're getting lousy reviews or people don't stick with them, then they need to slow down and read more.
There are other reviewers who give barely any feedback and they're getting the same points as someone who goes out of their way to give better reviews. The current system doesn't reward the quality of reviews. It's a communist economy, where everyone gets an equal share no matter how much or little effort they make. Let the cream rise to the top.
As for giving incremental credit for later chapters, the points can come from the system, just as the system currently gives extra points for reviewing new members.
I wholeheartedly agree with Dirk's entire post. And if you think about it, if we have the capability to reward reviewers using our points, then there is nothing stopping you to enter a private agreement with someone to review your entire novel for a certain number of points.
For those who don't have enough points, either review more or post less novels or post less new chapters or don't award reviewers (for both quality and quantity). That will also give reviewers some much breathing space to keep up with their reviews. And I'm fully aware of my bias in that I only work on a single book at a time, so members who prefer working on multiple books at any given time, might not like this idea so much. But I honestly think it will balance things a lot more than anything else.
Heck, I'll let go of wanting the "old forum" format back if I can have this!
How about an adjustment to the computations. I posted a poem last night over 7 points. I read a chapter in line review for 1.6 points. I think the base of the problem is in the calculations. Not to be whiny but just sayin. Mike
Mike, unless it was a 2000+ word poem, something doesn't seem right. That's the points I need to post chapters of 2300 words! I'd suggest ask Sol if something's up?
janet reid wrote:Even if we just have the option to give them points from our own balance would already be a step in the right direction. Although the skeptic in me think it wouldn't make a difference.
Allow me to address your inner skeptic...
Let's say I have 1000+ points in my account. I can afford to pay reviewers. But, poor John Doe, who just joined the site, doesn't have two points to rub together. He couldn't pay for reviewers, so he's screwed out of those reviewers who won't get extra bonus points for reading his stuff. They will come to me, instead.
Your inner skeptic is wise.
But then again, Poor John Doe, newest TNBW member, doesn't have more than 1-5 chapters posted ... Admittedly, they also have problems with not getting any reviews - the bonus points to review their work has been brought in for that exact purpose recently. It would be interesting if Sol could let us know (after enough time has elapsed) whether the extra bonus points did make a difference. If so, giving bonus points for reviewing complete works might also work. And if poor John Doe reads through my whole novel (which if I follow jp's advice will be a breeze ), he will find himself with more points too and he/she can also start to do this thing.
On a completely different trend ... What overwhelms me and prevent me to read complete works is when writers have more than one novel going. I can always ask which novel they want to have reviewed first, but then something else pops up that I can review instead (or I have a message to reply to and I forget what I was doing in my inbox in the first place) and I never do and when I remember to look at that work again, it's so far gone I'll never be able to catch up again. Which brings me to another point, some writers simply publish new chapters at a rate that is impossible to keep up with. Which brings me to another point, I have so many recips to do, that I simply can't review complete works anymore, especially those that publish new chapters at an unbelievable rate.
And then life steps in and you move to a new country on the other side of the world, and you have so many recips to do, you're drowning and it is impossible to catch up and read complete novels (and you're also here to write ...). And I have had the time to do 3-4 reviews a day most days in my previous uncomplicated life and had been in a fortunate position to review complete novels (because I'm like that, I finish things I start - it's a strength and a weakness), and now I have so many points I can dish out to reviewers I know would be able to use it much better than I can because I write so damn slowly and only need a fraction of them to post my own work, giving me more points to stick with novels will not make one bit of a difference (I don't need more points and I simply don't have the time).
So in short, what I'm trying to say is, it's not that simple. And more points doesn't address the problem - only part of it.
Personally, if I can transfer points to others to thank them for whatever, it would make my day.
And, that is also why I so understand why reviewers do not stick with me, so no need to apologise!
I've learned to stick to books I want to read, or where I want to keep the reviewer. Usually both. As a result, I'm down to about half a dozen readers. That also makes it easier to keep up with reciprocating while also writing.
I do think, though, that being able to give reviewers an occasional boost of points in return for great reviews would be terrific, as well as incremental points provided by the system for later reviews.
IMO, that is the only way to do it at the moment. It's not easy, because sometimes you review someone's whole book only to realise that they are not intending to do the same or can't return the favour (be it for whatever reason, life does happen and then it is just too overwhelming/too much to catch up again). But there are many writers on TNBW who does stick with you. It's just a matter of putting in the hard work to find and keep them!
For those that read Historic Romance novels, I have just finished reading Melody Thomas' Passion and Pleasure in London and I liked it. Based on that, I'll read more of her books if I see them.
And by all means, if you have read any good books recently, let us know!
Even if we just have the option to give them points from our own balance would already be a step in the right direction. Although the skeptic in me think it wouldn't make a difference.
Final request not to derail this thread any further. Take it to your own thread or to Fight Club, this is not the intent of this thread.
Thanks Janet
In other words, are you guys saying the reviews on the new site is also much better because of all the hard work by Sol and the team?
*cough-cough* don't make me send anyone to the naughty corner in this feel good thread, okay? *scowls*
amy s wrote:How do I get you to review 14 chapters? Holy moly! I'll buy you some American wine:-)
Get them hooked with a few of your best chapters, like Fishing and the chapters around Alina's duel and Katerin's promotion..
I'm a "finisher" too, it helps those without the gift!
Just lament lamentfully at how no-one sticks with your story
Au contraire! Simply shorten each story to 3 chapters and I guarantee they'll all get read
And don't forget to cram in as many adverbs as you can while you're at it!
How do I get you to review 14 chapters? Holy moly! I'll buy you some American wine:-)
Just lament lamentfully at how no-one sticks with your story and how you need someone to read through the whole thing to let you know what you've intended to bring across, came across. So I'm just reading and not reviewing in detail (although I'm making notes here and there when I see stuff that needs fixing IMO).
And of course, you need to review my writing dutifully, otherwise I will never talk to you ever again after I've gone through all this trouble (I'm like an elephant when it comes to remembering certain things - and this is one of them!). It's not my genre too, which makes it triple hard.
Heh, I don't even have to like you and I'll still do it. I'm such a push-over.
So basically, in your case, you don't even have to buy me wine ... But no more than 14 chapters, 10 even better. With wine, 20 chapters!
I'm really worried I "don't get it" though .... so I'm making all kinds of notes LOL
I just published a whole new chapter to Dictates. Baked from scratch. OK, now it is time to catch up on a million recips.

#$%&! grrrrrr. This is going to be torture ... sorry, meant to say, a long week. I'm smack in the middle of doing someone a big favour. It's only 14 chapters, so it shouldn't take me longer than next week. But then! I'll be all over TOSOTW and the new Dictate chapters. heh, at least it's great motivation to get me going!
*typing this from a closet, kids in front of them bad electronic devices, 27 dresses on the tele*
The functionality to indicate which reviews had been incorporated (the "applied" buttons). It's brilliant!
