Dirk, I wrote Lucky Thirteen in 2009. Finally in print 2013. The first novel I wrote is still not in print, and that was 2000.

This one is easy--I promise.  It just takes a little thinking.  Only one answer per question.
OH, I FORGOT--The laws differ from place to place, don't they?  Well, I'll entertain a little discussion.  State your case--judgement will be handed down after everybody has had their day in court.

I've accidentally hit save review rather than submit, so, yeah, it's highly likely.

Participated in Celebrate Literacy--The Magic of Books in Jackson, Mississippi today. Sold a few books, met our governor's wife, and even made a little blimp on the local news! Oh, and spoke briefly to a hopefully rising young film director about getting my Raiford Chronicles on film!

Allen, all Texans think that is the center of the universe, but you are a valuable source Between you and R. M. and a Lt. Myers here in my town, maybe I'll get most of it right.  Yes, John, you are my favorite doctor. Now, how the hell do I treat this plantar fasciitis?

Tirz is right on target, but some contests (Faulkner) do consider TNBW as published if there are more than 500 readers. They say a "work in its entirety." But because of their view, I have pulled everything I've ever submitted to them just to be sure.

Hey, nobody acknowledged that I got # 3 right! And I still think Clint Eastwood also fits # 4 from his time on Rawhide.

And R. M. Keegan, former cop and attorney can tell you lots. He's my jack the knife for police stuff as my favorite doc is for medical stuff.

Has nothing to do with grammar rules. Both were grammatically nearly flawless. Has to do with just not being well-written over all. Anybody can be taught to write a perfect sentence, but without something to compel the reader, well, I guess you rely on those literary idiots for sales. Then it become all about the almighty buck, rather than the craft. I fear for the generation that finds Twilight "good" reading. As for 50 Shade, well, there is a market for smut, and it's a big seller. Many readers of that genre wouldn't know good writing if it bit them in the arse.

Dirk, your paragraphs are fine.  Just remember that the action in the paragraph should be related to the speaker of the dialogue. And, yes, once the dialogue is delivered and the action changes, you need a new paragraph.

Weed out as many "the's" as you can. Try to avoid the double prepositions (over to, over at, etc.). Use that only when you must for clarification. It's sometimes necessary. Next and then get tiresome. Last! PLEASE GET THE LAY/LIE USAGE CORRECT! And never trust Word! Whoever programmed their grammar, needs to go back to school. I don't know how many times Word has underlined it's to be its when it's a contraction for it is.

Loved Moby Dick, Candace. Pamela, I'm a native Mississippian, and although I've done very well at the annual Faulkner competition, he's not my cup of tea. As I Lay Dying almost did me in. Sorry, but I just can't get into Jane Austen or the Bronte sisters. But in the modern era, I have to say Stephanie Meyer should be bull whipped. Absolutely awful. And although E. L. James and Meyer are multimillionaires now, I can't see why. I've read the Twilight garbage because I wanted to be in the loop with my students. Then I finally broke down and 50 Shades worse rubbish. I literally threw the first Twilight book across the room when I read Bella driving a 1952 Chevy truck with seatbelts!  If you put something of historical significance in your work, get it right! The first trucks with seatbelts were 1956 FORDS! And if E. L. knows any other dialogue tag besides murmured or any other kind of movement besides clambering, I missed them among the sea of murmurs and clambers. Want good classic? Try Dumas or Dickens (and he was considered uneducated.) And I love Steinbeck. Modern era--Give me Charlaine Harris, but just for fun because the writing might not be the best.

You are so right, Allen. I work a fulltime job, come home and cook dinner most nights. Meet with one writers group on Tuesday evenings. Meet with my editor Thursday evenings. Meet with another writers group Friday afternoons. Try to spend time with my sweetie at least a couple of nights a week. (BTW, he brings me breakfast to my office almost every week day.) I often read & review late into the night. I sometimes wake at 3 with the next chapter just having to get put on paper. I am really blessed to have a job I love and to be able to often finish my work and have time to write at my desk at work. So long as I have finished my classes and paperwork and am on the premises in case some issue with a disabled client arises, I can write away. I cannot say I have a set schedule, but I do write something, even if it's an edited paragraph, every day.

cool

And for the record, Bimmy, you won't get any points reading a free post.

Bimmy, look to the side of the piece. It will tell you which groups the person belongs to. Also, if it says "no points" above the inline review, chances are they did not post to a group that requires points and probably can't get the inline review. Free postings cannot.

Overall the story is solid. The biggest problem I have is how much Lisa pushes everyone away. But in the end, it worked out. I guess it sort of made her unlikable in the beginning, but she grew on me.
