Topic: Favourite romance movies

What's you favourite romance movie(s)?

Ones I can think of for now that I liked:

Benny & Joon
Notting Hill
Music and Lyrics
One Fine Day
50 First Dates

New Year's Eve would have been on the list if it wasn't for matching Sarah Jessica Parker with Josh Duhamel.  sad

As you can see, nothing classical.  I go to the movies to relax!  smile

Re: Favourite romance movies

Ah so many to choose!

You've got Mail. Which (surprise, surprise) I liked more then Shop around the Corner and In the Good Old Summertime.

Re: Favourite romance movies

Wow! There are tooooooooooooooooo many. This is hard.

I love The Quiet Man. And, yes, it's a romance.

The Princess Bride
10 Things I Hate about You
The Notebook
Sleepless in Seattle
An Affair to Remember
To Catch a Thief
How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days
Pretty Woman
Gone with the Wind
Beauty and the Beast (Disney)
Singing in the Rain
An Officer and a Gentleman
Edward Scissorhands
Ghost
Titanic
Last of the Mohicans
It's a Wonderful Life
My Fair Lady
Jerry Maguire
Bringing up Baby
The African Queen
Hitch
Circle of Friends
It Happened One Night
Westside Story
Dr. Zhivago
Mrs. Winterbourne
Casablanca
True Lies
Braveheart
Benny and Joon
The Wedding Singer

Can I keep going? I told you there were too many. I bet y'all haven't even heard of some on my list. And some on the list aren't listed as romances, but the romance is so strong in them, they have to be included.

Re: Favourite romance movies

Aaaaaaaaaaaaagh!
You can't put Braveheart on there! sad

I forced my husband to watch Princess Bride! I kept whining and complaining until he agreed! About ten minute in he was a fan! Haha!

Re: Favourite romance movies

I have to go with an older group of movies:

Since You Went Away
The Best Times of Our Lives
Casablanca
So Proudly we Hail
Mrs. Miniver
Strategic Air Command
The Glenn Miller Story

I will have to add "The Princess Bride" since I'm 'mostly dead' anyway. smile

EDIT: and I forgot two more: "Love Actually".  This one is several romances rolled into one movie and "Outsourced", which is hilarious as well as romantic.

We have an agreement in our house:  1 sniper movie, 1 chick flick  big_smile

It usually works well, not so when we watched The Other Woman hahaha

Re: Favourite romance movies

I guess, if I have to choose an absolute fave, it is The Princess Bride. I just LOVE that movie. So much that I now have the theme song performed at Lydia and Darren's wedding.

The reception followed at Amile's. Dupree sang "Storybook Love" as pictures of the bride and groom from the time they were children until their engagement photo flashed alternately on screens. Guests watched Lydia with Raif letting her stand on his feet as they danced, Darren with his first basketball, Lydia painting a ballerina on the screen of the bedroom Raif had designed for his three new baby girls, Darren with his arm in a cast, Lydia in her first tutu, Darren taking a three-point shot, Lydia in a princess costume for Halloween, Darren dressed as a knight during the Crusades, Lydia and Darren at prom, and on and on.
Darren held his hand out to his bride. "Time for our first dance, Mrs. McAlpin."
Lydia moved smoothly across the floor in Darren's arms. "I'll never let you fall," Darren whispered to the girl he had loved as long as he could remember. Darren passed Lydia to Raif and turned to dance with Neely.
Derrick tapped Raif's shoulder after a couple of turns around the floor. "She's my daughter, too, now." He held his arms out to finish the dance. "Just across the floor. You can do it." Lydia nodded and finished the waltz as Derrick passed her back to Darren.

Re: Favourite romance movies

I loved The Princess Bride.
Another one of my all-time favorites is The Last of the Mohicans.

Others I've really enjoyed:

Sleepless in Seattle
Hitch
Silver Linings Playbook
Dirty Dancing (the original)
When Harry Met Sally
Once
Howl's Moving Castle
Several musicals, including West Side Story, Grease, The Sound of Music, Singing in the Rain
Wall-E (We can include robot romance, right?)

Re: Favourite romance movies

oh my god, how could I forget?

Lady Hawke

Re: Favourite romance movies

I wonder if the new 50 shades movie will live up to expectations and make this list?  But whether or not it does, I think it's going to do very well at the box office.

Personally I'm not planning to see it.  Maybe one day when it's on dvd and there's nothing else left to take home.  But I'm definitely going to read the comments and reviews of the movie on the interweb ....  I know it's bad, but I don't think a real guy in the flesh would ever be good enough to live up to the expectations set by the books, so it's going to get really interesting soon!  hehehe

Re: Favourite romance movies

Nice ones too Karin!  smile

Re: Favourite romance movies

Would "Knight and Day" with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz fit the bill?  I liked it.

Re: Favourite romance movies

I think "Kate and Leopold" is a nice movie. Can't beat romance mixed with time travel.

Re: Favourite romance movies

The Notebook, Love Actually, Notting Hill, Dear Frankie, Shakespeare in Love, and Brassed Off, are some of my favorites that I watch time and time again.  A few others like; Dear John, Sleepless in Seattle, Sense & Sensibility, Emma, While You Were Sleeping, Pretty Woman, Pride & Prejudice, Dirty Dancing, and The Holiday are ones I enjoy seeing again when I can't find anything else. And then there are dozens more, many from lists already on this thread that I've seen and loved, but may not watch again.

Re: Favourite romance movies

Speaking of "Kate and Leopold", it made me remember another one of Meg Ryan's movies.  French Kiss.  Also a nice one I think for our list!

Re: Favourite romance movies

Based on Linda's and everyone else lists, we seem to have a lot in common!  smile

Re: Favourite romance movies

Karin! How did I forget Lady Hawke?????

Bellieve it or not, I've never seen Wall-E.

And, Linda, I watch While You Were Sleeping every time I see it on. How did I miss that one. I told y'all my list wasn't complete.

Re: Favourite romance movies

* prepares to not have dags talk to me ever again! *

I've never heard of this movie dags!  Had to google it - are you referring to the 1942 Bette Davis version?  If so, where would one get it?!  LOL

Re: Favourite romance movies

Now Voyager is my all-time favorite. Who can forget Charlotte's line, "Oh, Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars." ?

April, By the time Charlotte gets to that big moment I'm crying like a baby...no other movie touchs me as deeply as this one. I like to think of this as love done right... big_smile
Ps...I want to be Charlotte when I grow up. She had every right to be bitter and vengeful, yet she gave back until the end.

Re: Favourite romance movies

My favorite is Say Anything. I saw it in theaters and I don't dare watch it again because my 16 year old self loved this movie.

Re: Favourite romance movies

For whose of you who might be interested, and can get Turner Classic movies (TCM), the movie "Now Voyager" is on at 8PM (Eastern time).
