Topic: Rights question

Hello everyone,

I am brand new to this site and had a question about the rights of what is posted. Has anyone here experienced trouble with the free access to their story deterring publishers or agents? Just wondering. And thanks for looking at a newbie post!

Cheers,
Dae.D.Shields

Re: Rights question

Most publishers won't mind if you've workshopped your stories if you've published them here. This is a peer-to-peer review site, and as such, isn't classified as public. Members pay to be here, so it makes it a private site in the eyes of publishers and such. However, it is a good idea, once you get it edited and down to what you want to publish, take the story down from here before you submit it. Some publishers require you do so before they will accept it.

Welcome, Dae!

I agree with Bill's comments. It's exactly what I had to do with my first publisher. You'll find most people seem to remove their stories from TNBW prior to actual publication.

Enjoy the site--plenty of helpful people here!

Welcome to TNBW, Dae.
We were all newbies once. Feel free to jump in with both feet. The water's fine, and the navigating is easy ;-)

Thanks for all the great feedback!

Re: Rights question

Hello, Dae D.--

I had the same worry,  when my first short story was published. The publisher's contract specified the written work should not have appeared on a web site.Scared me to death! Luckily, the members calmed me down, just like Bill.

We're lucky to have a place to go with our stories, and friends who'll take the time to read them and let us know how to improve our work. You'll being a member of TNBW.

Welcome.

Re: Rights question

If you're worried about a publisher considering this site public, despite being a paid site, peer-to-peer review, etc., a recommendation is to use here a pseudonym different to the one you'll use when you send your work to an agent/publisher, and to use here a different name for your story, so it may be difficult to trace.

Bill's idea of completely removing the story from this site prior to sending it out is also a good one.

Re: Rights question

There is an inherent problem with what you say, Mariana. Most publishers run a plagiarism check on any prospective work. If you do publish under a pseudonym, it will (or should, I guess) show up in this check. Removal from a site before submittal takes this problem off the table. Changing the title even make it worse in the eyes of the publisher.

Re: Rights question

Worry, worry, worry!

Aren't we supposed to be showing DD our support? Don't give the guy even more to worry about.

1) Yes, it makes sense to remove the work from the site on publication. It only makes sense to remove the story that someone is paying for from tnbw, where theoretically, anyone in the world could join and read for free. Get that? Anyone in the world! It's obvious that doesn't happen, but remove it anyway, out of professional responsibility.

2) Forget changing names, unless you want to. It's not a problem with the publisher. Just make sure the publisher knows your real name, so they know where to send the money.
