Re: Site Bugs

I don't know if this is a bug or not, but shouldn't I be receiving email notifications whenever someone replies to a thread I've posted in?

Re: Site Bugs

Too much time has elapsed to edit.  My last question should really be changed to this:

I can now see the box over on the right that reflects new posts in the Premium group (mine included), but once I've read them, shouldn't the notifications go away?  My other objection is that clicking the link takes me to the very first post in the thread.  This thread, which is (so far) 8 pages long makes for a lot of clicking to find just what the 'new' post is.

EDIT: I have since found out that if I log out and them immediately log back in, the links to posts in the Forums (that I have read) are now gone. They should really go away after a simple refresh of my home page.

Tome, you will receive email notification to forum posts to which you subscribe.

Re: Site Bugs

Oh. I see.  Every other forum I am associated with automatically subscribes you to a thread that you post in (or start).  You have to go to your settings to unsubscribe.  I see the 'subscribe' link at the top now.

Thanks

Tom

Re: Site Bugs

Here's another bug for you. When I review and there is a word or phrase in italics, it puts that one word/phrase on a line all by itself. It even then puts a period or question mark on a line all by itself. And this is not just one author, but lots. I know just today I read Ann Everett, Linda Lee, and PByrd and all of their work had this problem. That tells me it's not in their manuscript, but a site issue.

Remind me not to ever visit those other sites, lol. I'm certainly glad this site doesn't automatically subscribe me to every thread I post in; much rather subscribe myself if it warrants notification. It would be a real pain to have to unsubscribe to everything to get rid of all the needless email. Take care. Vern

Re: Site Bugs

That's true, Vern, but every email that arrives from those forums has an "unsubscribe here" link so if you don't want any more from tha thread, you just click it and it's gone.

There should be emails going out when you subscribe. I know they aren't in many cases. We're tackling the email system this week so it will change.

Re: Site Bugs

It seems to be working now, Sol.  I got the email for your post just now almost instantly.

Re: Site Bugs

Not exactly a bug, but on the home page smartphone version under the visit groups head, the links for the forums are so small it's hard to hit them without hitting either the group link or the first posting link.  It's not so bad in landcape, but in portrait it's a problem.

Maybe turn that into a button extending to the available L/R margins?

Re: Site Bugs

I just received an email stating that "author" has created new topic "topic" in forum to which you are subscribed.  I clicked the link and was told, in no uncertain terms:
===========================================================
Skip to forum content  <<<<--- this statement is NOT visible on the page

Forum message

You do not have permission to access this page.
====================================================================

Why would I get a notification for something I'm not supposed to see?

EDIT: apparently, images are not allowed here in the forum or I would have shown what the page looked like.  According to "show page source" (in Firefox), there is a ton of coding, but all I see is what I listed above.

Bumping this because I've gotten several reviews mentioning odd formatting which seems to be associated to the use of italics. I have not seen the formatting issue in the reviews I've been doing as of yet.

Re: Site Bugs

Sol, I wanted to let you know about a loophole that I noticed.

I am not a member of the literary fiction group.  Temple Wang didn't post to TNBC premium.  If I search under her name, the site tells me to join the Lit Fic group or get approved as a contact.

All I have to do is click on her name on this forum here, and the site lets me have access to her work (without being a contact).  I can leave reviews ad lib.  Did you approve this?

Hi Amy, Temple has two different books by the same name posted. One is connected to Premium, the other only to Lit Fic. Are you sure you were clicking on the one only posted to Lit Fic? Please confirm. I just tested clicking on her name in the forum and then accessing the content and I was blocked.

Thanks,
Sol

Re: Site Bugs

I still think that if a post shows in one of my groups over in the box on the right side of my home page, clicking on the link should take me to the LAST post, not the first post.  Take this thread for instance (please), it is 8 pages long and when a new post shows up, one has to at least click the "8" to get to the first post on that page and then wheel/drag down to the last post.  Not very efficient.

And, once you read it - and there are no more in the thread to read - the link on the home page should go away automatically.  As it is, I have to log out and then back in to make them go away after I've read them.

Re: Site Bugs

I agree! And who wants to see posts weeks old, anyway? Is this an archives issue? Can't the early posts be deleted after, say, a couple of weeks? Or name the limit. But there should be a limit, in my view.

Re: Site Bugs

I agree with Tom and Jack. Or put the newest first, like on a resume.

Hi, Temple here.  I only have one book.  I have about 6 or 8 Chapters posted in Free Groups.  I did this because I hadn't yet earned the points necessary to post in a Group requiring credits, but there were a couple of people who expressed an interest in reading more after I posted, even knowing there were no points offered.  As I earn points by critiquing, I am reposting in the Premium Group that requires and pays points.  I have only earned enough credits at this point to post two or three chapters in Premium.  The versions in the Premium are not the same.  They have been refined based on further rewriting and critiques from people who have been interested enough to read and gracious enough to comment without earning points in the free groups - for which I'm humbled and grateful.  Hope that's clear.  Just to make it clearer, I have added the words "No Points" to the title of the version posted in the Free groups.

Re: Site Bugs

What happened to the in-line review?  No dialog box appears for me to write my review comments.

Is it still not working for you? I just checked and it seemed to be okay. Let me know.

Re: Site Bugs

j p lundstrom: When doing an in-line review, I sometimes have to click twice on the word I have just highlighted before the dialogue box appears. I thought this might be a problem with my computer, but perhaps not.
Sol: When I type a comment in the in-line review dialogue box after highlighting a word or phrase in the piece, the response to each keystroke is very slow. This doesn't happen anywhere else on the site.

Do you have an old computer?

Re: Site Bugs

This isn't a bug, but it bugs me and probably no one else. So if it's a big deal to fix or you don't think it's a big deal, I'll adapt. On the site the date is displayed yyyy mm dd. I am used to mm dd yyyy and when I see a date on reviews instead of catching it at a glance I have to stop and figure out what the date actually is.

Like I said if this doesn't bother anyone else and it's a big deal to fix, OR if I could fix it myself...please let me know. I'm easy. smile

Re: Site Bugs

Sol, I have a nearly new laptop with latest MSWord. As I said, I can type at top speed everywhere else on my computer, except whtn leaving an in-line review. Weird, huh? If no one else is experiencing this, I'll just cope.

"Old" is a relative term, Sol.  I have (and use) a computer that has 512Mb of RAM and a Pentium CPU.  It runs this site just fine and the editing is just as rapid as my newest  64-bit speedster gaming box.  In a lot of cases, the speed at which editing (or other in-browser activities) is handled isn't the computer itself, but the browser, which should have been your question.

I rather suspect that you editing box may have quite a bit of format-checking done on each keystroke that adds a delay to the character as it is entered and then displayed.  Further, I've noticed that highlighting a phrase in the editor and then altering the contents takes a finite amount of time.
