I was an English major and later studied applied ecology. For a while I worked in an archive, then moved to Hungary and taught English to art students and high school students. Now I translate (Hungarian to English), teach privately, and write fiction in my free time write.
My essays have appeared in Literary Mama and Brain, Child Magazine. My short story “Dust” was accepted for publication at the Wilderness House Literary Review. I’ve also written a novel, Spirit of the Turtle (workshopped on this site), which is in the process of being published. See my website at http://spiritoftheturtle.com or http://laramstrong.blogspot.hu. My thirteen-year-old daughter made a short animated film of one of the stories in Spirit of the Turtle, and not surprisingly, I’m very proud: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JqZOIkAvqc
My favorite writer of historical fiction for adults is Geraldine Brooks and for young adults, Scott O’Dell. I am also a great fan of Jhumpa Lahiri, Sherman Alexie, Jessamyn Ward, Louise Erdrich, Elizabeth Strout, and, among writers for children, Eleanor Estes and Laura Amy Schlitz.
I have two children and a tolerant husband who doesn’t mind (too much) when I disappear into my room for hours to write.
