Well, I do not lay claim to being a writer—just that I write. I prefer to read and write fiction that is grounded in the loose sands of reality, as it seems stranger to me than any fiction. I’ve never had the luxury of devoting myself in any meaningful measure to the craft (those of you that graciously subject yourselves to looking at my stuff will surely come to that same conclusion), but I’ve always wanted to become a good, if not great, writer. I’ve written stories of one sort or another since I was a kid; mostly centered on horror and SF (although I hate labels). I have never liked slasher stuff-- I’ve found evidence of real monsters lurking in the shadows of my life, to want to read or write about gratuitous violence for violence sake. Likewise, my science fiction must be grounded firmly on the terra-firma of character drama to make me believe it is real, and plausible, “science” fiction. My writing activities have come in the form of erratic, and sometimes, manic episodes of starts and stops. It probably explains why I haven’t completed many stories worthy of being published. I’ve been the victim of creative writing classes that have sent me whimpering home with my pride tucked smartly between my legs, but a renewed desire to better myself and try again. Workshops only left me wondering if I had a writer in me at all, and at the end of it, wishing I’d just walked up to the workshop boss and said, “Hey, why don’t you just go ahead and kick me in the scrotum and take my money now and I’ll be on my way,” for all I ever got out of one. I’m not a prolific writer as far as posting completed sections, but I look forward to getting to know some of you as time goes on. ~L.Fleming Tyler, Texas
