I am a storyteller whose published writing experience over the last 20+ years has been feature stories and profiles, some related to my job as head of communications, formerly at PBS and most recently at a national nonprofit environmental organization.
The middle-grade novel for which I have completed the first draft, and continue to revise, is set against a backdrop of climate change. My work experience also has prepared me for making earth science topics easier for people (and kids) to understand.
I have worked for more than six months with a professional developmental editor on this draft. I have sent out 30 queries to prospective agents date and have received only "not a good fit for us" replies. I am looking for feedback about how to best make the opening chapter more compelling and ensure I am keeping the story enticing along the way. My editor thought I had done so successfully, but the lack of interest from agents tells me otherwise.
