Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Got a nit on your response about Shogran using the Covenant gem. You say Melayne isn't too worried about someone using a gem unethically because they are probably skilled enough to not blow up the world, yet she is terrified of Merran's power because she might act upon whims without ethics/control?

Double standard, dude. Melayne would be terrified of Shogran having a Covenant gem. Someone is mis-aligning TIME.

What would Pike have done with one of those babies at his disposal? Hmmm? Now time is bending, Shogran has Caneth trapped in a tornado, and is also stealing children. It isn't beyond Melayne to see the big picture.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Let me think about this.  She already seen that Shogran uses them and throws them away.  And she's got her daughter in a special category of 'doesn't know her own strength'.  Oh, yes, she's definitely wearing blinders.

Nobody is ready yet to see the big picture.  That requires two things: Merran in Pike's Observatory and Kirsey with some very old library books.

Pike would probably have tried to raise the kid in his circle of friends at the Academy.  Someone there would have turned maternal and more-or-less taken him

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

A note on your latest set of reviews: In a sense Pengrit represents what Melayne fears her daughter might become--a feral sorcerer, without the deep sense of responsibility needed to go with her power.  Merran's shown us that her mother is wrong, but Melayne's fears run deep.

Caneth sees things a little differently.  He understands, more than Melayne, that 'the capacity is the need', but he also knows that his wife's fears are based on experience, not fancy.  You saw him tell Merran she could take care of the next two patients, and when he broke the promise, Merran fully understood why.  She would have stood aside if he hadn't spoken.

OBTW, I'm going another bout with strep.  I slept about 15 hours a day from Saturday until Tuesday.  I'm on amox/clavanulate now.  That seems to work better for me than some of the fancier antibiotics, and it's not too expensive.  I have to see if I've got a source of reinfection.  There's a few things to check.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Oh, some forward background: Caneth is the only one who knows where Pike ended up.  He and Kirsey are the only ones who know what actually happened to Pike, and Melayne knows for sure that Pike is alive, though not where he is, or in what condition.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Make sure you throw out your toothbrush. It is a common vector for reinfection.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Thanks.  I forgot last time.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Bathroom water glass or drink bottles? Get rid of them. Ever swig mouthwash out of the jug? Throw it away. Get rid of anything that is in contact with said toothbrush (like toothpaste that rubbed against toothbrush or a tray), go around your house with some wipes. Clean surfaces you might have touched after eating with fingers or blowing nose. Clean door handles. Computer surface, handles of toilet. Then do the same to your car and car keys.

Just a few more ideas.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

I've got notes worth about 2,500 words on healing the mountain.  It will take about seven hours to put them in usable form.  Amy, you won't be happy.  The power moments are understated.  (I don't think I'll have anything like Sil's transformation.)

But Kirsey will have a small dose of Adventure.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

I work the next two nights and it's a weekend, so don't know if work will allow me to work on anything fun. Either way, I'll get to your story by Monday.

I just won't comment on the power moments since you already realize my opinion. I'll see if I can find anything else to mention that might be of use.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

If you see a way to improve them, I would like to hear it.  It's just that much of this occurs deep underground.

637

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

gotcha.

638

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Ouch. Just spent an hour and some thinking how Kirsey may carry his writing instruments.  Did you know the Chinese had nickel ('German') silver during our Middle Ages?  It might work for pen nibs, but they would have to be wiped clean after use because acid can leach  the copper from it.  Electrum is probably too soft.

Might put up a photo later.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Okay got a minor power moment for Kirsey.  It ties in with some of the existing spellwork I have to clean up.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

I spent more than a day working on the rope system so that Jaylene didn't leave a rope behind while in the Sandtrap. I hear you.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Okay, here's that writing box.

If you can read Pitman, there's a possible fat spoiler (not absolutely set in stone) in the red text under the image.  No fair getting help on the web!  You have to figure it out yourself.  (Link for the intrepid########bullheaded)  (Oops, 'have to' should be 'have time to'!)

I've got to catch up on errands, so I won't have that much time to work here today.  I've got at least seven or eight hours of reviews to do and I may do half of them.  Then I've got the chapter/scenes I've been working on to type up.

And Merran and Jamen going after the kids, and back to Erevain, and all the training chapters, and probably recutting chapters one through four to move the front-of-the-shop and the back-of-the-house closer together.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

I'm jealous of all your free time. FYI, the hemorrhage of talented people in my department is continuing. We lost another one to vascular. I may be moving back to Cleveland if this keeps up. However, there was a job in Tacoma, WA. How far is that from you, Janet? I might interview there just so we can get together for dinner.

That's actually two hours from me. smile In fact, I visit Tacoma once or twice a year since our main office is located there.

6 hrs from me. Meh, still doable, will just make a weekend of it! smile

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

NJC, do you want reviews on your latest chapter? Just making sure ...

646

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Sure.  If it's out there it  can be better.  Not a lot of points, but take 'em!

Girl's night in Washington State! Woot, woot!

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

New Jersey,

Chapter number? Book number?

649

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

It's a chapter fragment, newly posted in B2 as Ch42.  Take you ten minutes, and maybe worth 0.6 point.

Make it happen Amy! But I do hope things get better at work. In the mining and oil industries people are being laid off in bounds and heaps ... it's a bloodbath to be honest. It not much, but at least you're in a line that will always be needed! I don't think people will start shooting each other any time soon!
