I recently bought the Epson Workforce 3640 all-in-one printer for $120 at Staples. It's a bit big, but a fantastic home printer.

All-in-ones are compromises.  My primary printer now is a wide-carriage photo-capable Epson R1900.  I don't see any good replacements out there for it, so I'll keep it running as long as I can.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Even as I try to get other things done, bits and pieces of large-scale plot occur to me, falling perhaps near their final places.  I've got at least a dozen notes from the last 24 hours, and at least four of them have to do with large-scale plot.  They range from B3 (which includes Pike Observatory) past B6 (when Caneth is freed).
B1-B3 are Part I; B4-B6 are Part II.  Parts I and II make up First Account: Ceremony of Innocence; Parts III and IV make up Second Account: tbd.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Did I review the Chaplerette in B2 that you wanted? If not, then give me the number and title, please.

604

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

That's the one.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Review is up, then.

I could pick on you for being awake right now, but I'll give you a pass for a change.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

You didn't say anything about the medical parts: using lack of sleep and fear from the hallucinations as an escape from the pain spell--or about surviving four days instead of three without water.

607

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Okay, I've made some changes to meet your objections.  I'm afraid he'll get out of his predicament altogether too soon.

608

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

I agree that hallucinations would help him break from a locked spell by forcing his brain on another track. As to the water, I was willing to suspend belief. I don't take a hallucinating man's estimate of time as reliable. And he was right next to a stream, so he might have had a drink without realizing it.

I've seen people live more than three days without fluids. Mind you, they weren't walking around, but the outside temp makes a difference too. If they aren't sweating much, they can last a while.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Well, he'd gotten there little by little.  (The text now says 'reached')  The time estimate is an inference from the time w/out sleep.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Just make it so that he has the pain whenever he tries to activate his sorcery. That way, he is locked in one dimension similar to the girl who Merran's mother landlocked (Pengrit). So his suffering is solely caused by himself. If he doesn't try to use power, then he can eat, drink, and move around. That would drastically extend the length of the spell and keep him under control for a longer time.

It makes sense that Merran would use a similar spell that was a combination of what her mother taught her-with the pain being a little detail that got tagged on just for spite.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Well, no, he's also under a Barricade, so he can't use Sorcery.  The pain spell was Merran's camoflage for the Barricade---though she also meant to disable him if the Barricade failed.  She did not plan on running for three days under a terror geas.

What fighting Merran has learned she learned from Harsan (mostly) and Glasias.  But since they had the same training as Merran there will be some similarity.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Okay, one last set of edits to Pain v. Nightmare.  If you think I broke it, let me know and I'll repub so you can get points for teling me.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

While I'm trying to get through the Erevain episode, I keep getting ideas on the Book 2 plot, and on how to recut the opening chapters of Book 1 to answer the recommendations of people here.  There'll be fitting and shimming needed.

In the meantime I have about $800 of computer parts arriving tomorrow and Thursday and I need to get to work with them.  It took almost a day to figure out what of the new stuff is compatible with what and to find stuff to work with my older parts (including some 10k rpm SCSI disks).  Antiferromagnetic mass storage can't arrive soon enough.  We may yet have Welton fine-grains.

As to Book 2.  The conference with Melayn, Kirsey, and Threkesrom (where the wolves are sent outside) has to develop.  Kirsey has to tell what he knows and has learned, including Pengrit (Threkesrom shouldn't be surprised) and the chase in Vyznt--with the presumed-Shogran and the man-shaped shadow in that vortex.  Melayne has to find a place to hunt for her daughter's breadcrumbs.

She'll find a breadcrumb.  I hadn't planned it, but it's there once Melayne knows the routes that Merran and Jamen had planned.  (Do you see it?  Hint follows.)

And when she finds that breadcrumb, she'll have another worry about her daughter.  (But it won't be what she should be worrying about.)

I think I'll take an hour or so to write it out.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Two Book 2 chapters up.  One is a script outline that continue the conference after Kirsey sends his wolves out.  The other is Melayne on the trail of her daughter.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

I've got some time this evening. I'll see if I can get to it then.

616

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Of course I see now that I've got more than a few typos in the second chapter.  Do the earlier one first (even if tNBW isn't putting it in the home page).

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Elishiva,
If you don't prefer to start with my chapter 1, you might pick up at Flying and Flight.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

I've kind of been poking around at random. I'm very good at wandering into the "construction zones". smile I'll head for that section next.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Hey NJC,

I believe I did start that Flying and Flight section right where Melayne is introduced to the Clans. It's been a bit since I reviewed that section, but I remember most of it. I'm still having trouble with so many character names though. They are starting to get familiar, but just barely. The story kind of loses its wonder when you start listing off all these strange names that I feel I should know already, but don't.

Hope that makes more sense. smile

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Yeah.  It does strip you back to grammar and the most limited elements of composition, as well as spelling and punctuation.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

You must have a most inferior radar.

Anyhow, there were two chapters.  The first one is just a script outline.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Edits made to Breadcrumbs and Bacchanalia, partly in response to reviews.  Let me know if you want a repub.

623

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Oh, Amy, the script outline before =Breadcumbs and Bacchanalia= may address some of what you've mentioned in reviews.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Will look. This weekend is free and then it is back to the coal mines for me.

For those without radars, inferior or not, could you please say which book and chapter numbers? Tah! smile
