Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

Good idea on Quickees. We'll make that change. Thanks.

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

SolN, I'm still running into many cases where I'm writing a forum post and the site logs me out, sometimes resulting in an entire long post being lost. One of our newest members and I both just got bitten by these timeouts. I know you and Kdot discussed this last year, which I believe was a cookie timeout issue (please contact Kdot for the details of what he found).

Can this be fixed? While it can be frustrating for long-term members (I sometimes inevitably forget to copy my pending post to the clipboard in case the Submit fails), it no doubt makes a poor first impression for new members who are trying to evaluate the site's stability and suitability for their needs.

Thanks
Dirk

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

I'm having to sign in a lot lately. Is there something you can do? Thanks.

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

I see the cookie issue has been scrubbed off the face of the planet by the Big Crash so in summary, three points
1) Some cookies have a rapid expiry. For example, I logged in today and 4 out of 8 cookies are set to expire a bit after midnight (~five hrs)
2) Five cookies have invalid domains (leading "dot"). Some are "secure"=false, which I believe causes Chrome to auto-discard (but not Firefox, oddly)
3) Some cookies have invalid expiry dates into 2026. This should not exceed 400 days or the browser is allowed to ignore it (https://discourse.mozilla.org/t/cookie- … pan/105916)

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

I typically get kicked out after about 15-20 minutes.

Mayhap you're on chrome? The secure=false would do that

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

Yup, Chrome. Is there a way for me to change that setting?

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

Sadly, I haven't found a way to circumvent that client-side on Chrome

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

I dunno.  Chrome don't do that to me

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

It only happens when I'm using the forums. It also happened to a trial user recently.

Sol, when I get emails sent to me by TNBW, and I click on the link within (e.g., to go to a new message from another member), my security software (Bitdefender) intercepts my attempt to do so, and kicks up an error message like the following (edited for brevity):

https://email2.booksie.com/ls/click?upn=u6w90slL...etc.
Your connection to this web page is not safe due to an unmatching security certificate.
This means that the certificate was issued for a different web address than the one it is being used for, and you run the risk of exposing your data by accessing this page.

I can force my way past it, although I never do so at any other site. I'd prefer not to have to do it here either since there's always a chance the site's been hacked.

Thanks
Dirk

Sol, I'm still getting error messages from Bitdefender and Chrome that the urls in the emails the site generates are unsafe. This evening, I received an email notification from TNBW that another member had posted a new chapter. When I clicked on it, first Google intercepted it, then Bitdefender, and then Google again. They must really not like your emails. LoL.

Will a fix for these email links be forthcoming? Again, this comes down to trying to give new members the confidence to remain on the site. See next post for more details.

Also, please see the discussion on forum timeouts earlier on this page. (Separate problem.)

Thanks
Dirk

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

A little more detail:

If I click on the link inside the TNBW email I receive following another member's newest posted chapter, I get this from Bitdefender on Windows 11:

Suspicious page blocked for your protection
https://email2.booksie.com/ls/click?upn … 3QUqZY4...
Your connection to this web page is not safe due to an unmatching security certificate.
This means that the certificate was issued for a different web address than the one it is being used for, and you run the risk of exposing your data by accessing this page.

Then Google Chrome intercepts it as well, yielding:

Your connection is not private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from email2.booksie.com (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards)
NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID

This server could not prove that it is email2.booksie.com; its security certificate is from *.sendgrid.net. This may be caused by a misconfiguration or an attacker intercepting your connection.

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

Emails are actually quite hard. So many services are on the look-out for mass Emails with slightly similar bodies, you can land your server on RBLs within minutes. Same with SMS these days. My own phone company (Rogers) is on one which makes me laugh. Every time they try to text me their latest offer, my phone tosses it into junk without asking.

This will not be easy to solve, I fear

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

It depends on what's causing it, doesn't it? I included more detail in my previous post.

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

Sol, can the broken email links and overly short forum timeouts be fixed? See earlier posts/discussion for details.

I keep asking, but I haven't seen a reply.

Thanks
Dirk

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

Hmm. Okay, thanks for letting me know. I'll have it taken care of along with the Quickee fix.

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

I'll also take care of the cookie problems.

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

Awesome! Thank you.

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

Sol, another issue that new users run into is that the Home/Portfolio screen, which is accessed via the Post Your Writing button along the top menu strip, causes confusion because of the big red Add New Content button on that screen. If someone is trying to add a second chapter to a recently created book, new users hit the red button and end up accidentally adding a second book rather than just a new chapter. This costs them even more points to correct it. I've seen new members add as many as three books before realizing their mistake.

Makes me wonder how many trial members we lost after they ran into this that we don't know about.

The fix ought to be easy:

Change the label on the red button to Create New Work and add a warning below the button something like: "To ADD A CHAPTER to an existing book, use the Action buttons below." ADD A CHAPTER really needs to stand out in some way because the red button draws most of the attention. Although not foolproof, this should stop most new members from doing it wrong (the ones who slow down long enough to read).

There is some online help that shows the "Add New Content" button that probably should be updated as well.

Thanks
Dirk

Maybe "Start New Work"or "New Story or Poem" ?

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

Create New Work is probably better than add, start, or new. When it's a smaller work (short story, poem, essay, article, etc.), you essentially create it and you're done. For a book, you create it and then can come back later to add more chapters (via the action buttons).

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

I was trying to resurrect a post I had created containing tips on how members can maximize the number of reviews they receive. Spent 1.5 hours finding and importing it from the Way Back Machine and updating it.

As often happens, the site logged me out and my post was lost (I couldn't even access it by pressing the browser's back button). Very frustrating.

Sol, please fix the timeout problem in the forums. Why is a timeout even needed in the forums? As far as I know, no other part of the site does this. Also, it would be cool if the back button took you back to your post (the page you just came from), just in case posting fails for any reason.

Thanks
Dirk

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

Looks like I found a bug with "epilogue" chapter numbering. I wrote an epilogue for one of my books and posted it as chapter 46. I then looked for and found that one of the chapter numbers you can set for a chapter is "epilogue", so I changed 46 to epilogue, and the chapter disappeared. I would have expected it to turn up as chapter 100, but after some trial and error, it turns out the system set the chapter number to 0, same as my prologue.

Since both chapters subsequently had the same chapter number and version number, I was unable to bring up the epilogue chapter, even though it showed in the pick list of all chapters on the posting view. Every time I picked it, the system would show the prologue, which was the first chapter numbered 0 in my book, whereas the epilogue was the second chapter numbered 0.

I was able to work around the problem by going into the EDIT wizard (the white button) and changing the chapter number of the epilogue to something unused (e.g., 100). Naturally, the workaround isn't going to be at all obvious if you don't know a bit about database records and how they're stored and retrieved. It actually appeared at first as if the epilogue had gone completely missing until I spotted it in the pick list following the prologue.

I assume the correct behavior is for the system to set the chapter number to 100, not 0. If so, then the fix should be fairly easy.

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

This is a test as I try to see if I can duplicate the timeout issue on forum posts.

I did a delay and am now trying again. Let's see if this session was mantained.

Re: Bugs & Maintenance Requests

Okay, why do some posts in the forum stay for days in the notifications  ( see Sol’s above), while other posts are there for only an hour or so, then disappear?
