Topic: (Site Support) Blocking members, how does it work?

Member Blocking.

An unsavoury question, but hey ho, a necessity I'm afraid.

I think I have a bit of a 'troll' situation going on where a member who has blocked me from their stuff (fair enough) seems to still be able to retrospectively edit/amend review comments upon my work into harassing messages. Which seems unfair.

So, if a member blocks me, it would appear that I can no longer bring up their profile in order to block them in return.

Does the 'Block' work both ways or does this mean that they can still access my junk (because I haven't blocked them; indeed, I am blocked from blocking them)?

If they have blocked me first, can I not block them likewise?

Re: (Site Support) Blocking members, how does it work?

I have quite a few people blocked Dill and they have returned the favor without me knowing it. So I think you can still block them, because I did. If you still have trouble ask Sol to look into it. Edited to include: If they are accessing you through their reviews of you, then delete those reviews.

Dill, I just checked on a particular person I have blocked, and I can still go to their profile and their posts and I can do an inline or a regular review on their stuff.  They just can't on mine, apparently, so I think it doesn't work both ways.  I am not sure how you go about blocking them if you can't see that person's profile.  Maybe a question for Sol.

Oh, I can never delete the review in question; it's an audacious highfalutin masterclass masterpiece in aggressively tearing prose to shreds solely for the sake of sounding superior, authoritative and masterful in an attempt to humiliate and disgrace the author. It's fantastic; the best ever and I love it. A collector's item; somebody's best work, a real keeper.

I'd just like to stop the originator of the review, who blocked me, coming back and taunting me by editing/amending the comments section with further 'advice' upon what I should do to myself.

Thanks MJ. It seems to be as you say.

I don't mind people blocking me, it just seems a little skew-whiff if I can't return the favour and block them from accessing my junk in an even-handed manner.

Cheers!

Re: (Site Support) Blocking members, how does it work?

I have blocked only 2 people and it was after they blocked me. I just don't remember what I did since it was so long ago.

Re: (Site Support) Blocking members, how does it work?

On your drop-down menu, go to settings. You will see  four choices on the left; the second one down is Blocks. Select Blocks. The description says they can't access your stuff. You can still access theirs. They have to block you in order to keep you from reading their work.

To block someone, Use Search to call their name up. You will see the option to block them. If I can do it, anyone can.  JP

Make your 'stuff' inactive until Sol can eliminate the problem or let you know how to block whatever's causing you grief.  That way no one csn have access until the problem is resolved, then you can go back and make them visible.  Just a suggestion.

Cheers,
MJ

Apparently you have a special talent that not "anyone" has. I tried it just to check and all I get when I choose the "block" option is that I have no one blocked. There is no option to enter a name to block. I can't use search to bring up a name and it give me a "block" option; it doesn't exist in this case under this scenario. So, this is obviously a situation for Sol to correct and make available to all users should they desire. I have no intention of using it -- as far as I know, I'm blocked by only one person and count that as a blessing and they are not worth lifting a finger to return such block -- but it should still be there for all members if for any. And the beat goes on .... Take care. Vern

Yes, if you type in the person's name in the search bar on your home page, it will take you to a possible list of authors and then click on that author. Once on their profile page, there is an option to block. If the person has you blocked, when you get to the profile page, it will tell you the author's profile is private.

Okay, in the post I left before and since deleted, I made a mistake: the person hadn't blocked me. So I went to an author I knew for sure had blocked me and it's just as Janet said. That author, though, is blocked by me, too. How did I happen to block someone who had me blocked? This is weird.
sad
Edited to add:
I think I have this figured out. I went to another writer I know for sure blocked me, and I could access their profile. Could it be that the first author I went to made their work inaccessible to the web?

This is correct. Or should I say, this exactly the same experience that I encounter.  If someone has blocked me from accessing their work, I no longer have the permission required to block them from mine. That Author's profile, is as Janet says, marked private. The 'block' button does  not appear.

As stated above, I've done the search with both blocked and unblocked members and I do not find an option to block on any profile I bring up. It must be in Greek or some other form I can't read or see. But I don't intend on blocking anyone, so I guess maybe the site figured that out and doesn't give me that option. Take care. Vern

This is an uncomfortable loophole! I just looked: if I've blocked a person, I can see the little gold button on their profile saying I blocked them, & allowing me to unblock. I can also see their little quickie box and (should I choose) leave them a message! I found the profile of a member who has blocked me, & I get a screen saying their profile is private. No option to block back. Yet they can leave me a quickie? Dig through my posted writing? Review me? Fortunately this person meant the block as a block -- he/she doesn't bother me. It would be extremely annoying to be blocked by someone who then decided to heckle me, however. Skew-whiff is right!

It's me, by the way. He can't be rid of me. I have the power now. lol

Re: (Site Support) Blocking members, how does it work?

I totally agree with Corra about this being an uncomfortable loophole.  Short of pulling the heckler through the screen and boxing his/her ears in the form of vigilante justice, it appears to be something Sol will have to address.

I just realized through this thread I could go into the posts of the ones I have blocked and leave all manner of retaliatory remarks on their work, but they can't reciprocate.  I can even change some of the comments I've made on previous exchanged reviews.  hmmm...  I wouldn't, however, do that... well, maybe...nah!  Not worth the effort since we're all adults here, but maybe just one sharp jab... nah!  Not my style, but ...  thanks, Dill.  You don't know how long I've wanted to ...

OK. We'll look into the block functionality.

It's a 'Troll' problem that I'm whinging about here, not the ongoing Hobbit infestation. wink

Well, sir. You are most inconsistent. I clearly recall you comparing me to one of these in the recent past. If I'm a hobbit now, I feel tall! And tidy! cool

They could reciprocate by re-posting those back-hand retaliatory remarks here in the main public forum, if they were a mean enough person. Just saying... they could. smile

I'm getting to the age and condition where I can't remember what specific insults I've issued to whom. I'm sorry corra, of course you are a Troll. What was I thinking, you are Troll royalty. Queen of Trolls. wink

Dill,
I can access a person's profile who've blocked me. I've done in twice with two different people. BUT when I tried to access a third, it said: This member's profile is private.

I think I know why. If you go to your profile settings you'll find a box that says: Make my profile page visible to: and a drop down menu with two options: Everyone or Only to logged in users that are not blocked.

Your 'troll' must have picked that option and that is why you can not block them.

I don't know if that's a loophole or not.

Sounds logical. Thanks.

Although the persons profile is blocked to me and marked "Private" I still get presented with the profile mugshot of said person, which strikes me as not very 'Private'; also disconcerting in terms of imagery.

Re: (Site Support) Blocking members, how does it work?

OH, MY GOD! How we do go off on tangents! Can you really imagine yourself going back over years of old reviews to alter them? What a waste of time! I've blocked four people in the three years of my membership, one of whom appeared to be a seriously sick individual who talked about kidnappings and torture. Sol fixed that situation. If he says he will fix something, he will.
Admittedly, it's annoying to see that someone you blocked can still rewrite their old reviews (which is what I understood you to mean). If that happens, can't you delete those reviews?
But do you really care? Who wants to waste their time on a Hatfield-McCoy feud? (Apologies, Dill--I'm not well-versed enough in history to refer to an English rivalry.)
