Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

Supreme Bashar (an introduced rank of the Chapter House Bene Gesserit)... arguably the man in charge of the most powerful force of fighting men in the 3000+ years covered by the first 5 books. If you can name how his uniform colour differed from the sardukkar, I'll agree you should have more than 3 colour patterns (good guy, bad guy, neutral). Bonus points if you can do it without google - I'll even stop moaning about the AI

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

I'm too lazy to Google. I don't recall much diversity in Star Wars or Dune. I'm considering black with red trim and gold accessories for all uniforms to match the colors of the Imperial flag. I should still have something to identify the Imperial Family and maybe the governors. Perhaps gold eagles on the collars.

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

Have them match. If the trim color of enlisted is red on a black uniform, then the officers are red uniforms with black trim

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

Imperial ruling elite are definitely black with red trim to match the flag. The reverse for everyone else is easy to remember, but it will make the classiarii and legionarii very easy targets, even in low light. Cannon foder. :-)  Will ponder some more.

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

Next up, the name for the loony AI. So far, the best I could do to jazz up (and lightly disguise) Janet's name is Janette. Could use more sizzle. Ideally, something a little over the top.

Wordplay on Janitor?

Jackaroo? This has the advantage of being Aussie and male, which fits for a drag queen.

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

I wish to recant slightly from my previous position.

I am very interested in clothing, colours, ranks of insignia etc when it's
(a) of interest to the POV character
(b) part of discussion and relevant (eg Which prince do I shoot? The one wearing House Stark yellow!)
(c) necessary for the plot (eg a maid being the only one wearing frills in a murder-mystery)

For example, Amy has a character named Katerin who made herself a dress out of a bed sheet. I didn't pay much attention to her wardrobe before that point, and can't say much after, but, for that moment, the dress was part of the show. Amy could have spent an entire paragraph describing it, and it would have been great since it was of interest to the characters.

Conversely, a lot of people make a lot of fuss about the abilities of the Emperor's assistants and what their wardrobe means. Here's a page that spends about a thousand words on their different types of uniforms for their job duties.

I find this troublesome because those guys were never relevant to an MC nor to the story (Not for movie #6 anyway - they're pretty important for the books if you factor in Mara Jade).

they could spend more time telling me about the mains than this riff-raff. I would rather not have had to wait 25 years of my life to learn Yoda had a lightsabre. This kind of stuff is pertinent.

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

I dedicate a sentence to it: Lupus straightened the collar of his uniform. Black with red trim, it included the Imperial emblem — a golden eagle surrounded by a crimson laurel wreath — above the heart. Seems reasonable since it's a brief description to help picture the character. It's also a description of the Imperial emblem, which appears again later, including on the Imperial flag.

Don't get me started.

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

I will add material about the dress. Good point.

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

Silly question: are human-like tones in speech considered to be "modulated"? The dictionary definitions are a little vague.

313

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

English is not very modulated. You can speak it in a flat tone and be perfectly understood, unlike Chinese where pitch and pace changes are required (effective modulation).

Useless party fact: English become tonal when counting. Try reciting someone a phone number or count to ten without changing tones.

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

Interesting.  When I read off digits, I round the tones on the first and last in the sequence, but otherwise hold them as flat as I can.  And yes, that is otherwise unnatural in Engish, because we accent words by voiced stress rather than by length (which I am given to understand is the way that Russian places accents).

A fellow I know wrote an early voice-response system.  (NOT for cold-calling!)  He recorded each digit four times: Beginning of sequence, middle of sequence, end of sequence, and standalone.

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

Thank you both.

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

Does anyone know what happens in the following scenario: if I review someone, and they respond, and I go back into the review to leave more feedback, will they be notified about the additional comments? It's my impression the system doesn't support that. Correct?

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

Send you two replies on your chapter 37 and 38

You have to let them know, the system doesn't, no. I think I'm going to get a lot of surprises when I go back and re-read my reviews to start revising.

Thanks. I saw a few new comments in 37, but not in 38. Either way, I'm keeping all the reviews for v3, so it's all there,

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

I'm still planning the rest of v3.

For those who read v2, what changes would make the story more enjoyable and compelling? Also what bored you the most? Hammer me on that point, please. Also, what do you think about the two MCs, and what would make them more interesting?

Finally, what about the two sets of characters in each MC's head? Currently, Joseph's God is mostly serious, Andrew is the resident wiseass, and Joseph's mother gives him his spine, while also getting him into trouble. Apollo and his God have a mostly "testy" relationship. In v3, Apollo's father shows up in his head after he dies. I'm looking forward to writing that.

Suggestions?

Thanks!
Dirk

Go rewatch a beautiful mind and ask me this again

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

I've seen it and can even remember much of the plot for a change. What's your point?

I'm still planning reviewing v3. smile I'm reviewing something for Charles first, and then I'll get back to normal again with the rest of you.

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

Tick tock. I don't see Charles writing cameos for you. Unless you're Abbix. She's in deep Bantha poodoo.

Re: The Galaxy Tales - Dirk B.

It wasn't easy to choose but I have promised him to look at Max as soon as it was done. The guy writing cameos is top of the list this weekend!
