Thank you, Temple, for your wishes and for sharing a reality that seems so far removed from us here. Too often, freedom is appreciated only when it gets taken away. Thanks for reminding us. Happy Holidays to you and all the writers here.

Re: Changing order of chapters (8 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Thanks, Bill and Clarke!
I used Bill's method, though the system first didn't let me post after I had changed the chapter numbers, still believing chapter 12 already existed. I fiddle around with the version number. It let me do it then, but I have two number 12 chapters now in the list. Doesn't matter for now.

I have a question.
I need to insert a new chapter out of order. How does this technically challenged women do this without messing everything up?
Thank you very much.

As I was reviewing a chapter last night, the site crashed and I'm not sure if it saved the many comments I left. When checking, it said "Draft" in red, but I don't know what to do to access that chapter with my comments. Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Christine

Thanks, Marilyn. I was going to read the article, hoping to learn more about horses as they play an important role in my story as well. Any books or other resources you can recommend for learning about horses for this city girl?

Re: Groups languish (24 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Rachel and JP, Sounds like the respect issue is the number one concern. Putting out one's writing means making oneself vulnerable. That's tough, especially for beginners. I feel for new writers on the site when some of the reviewers throw out critiques that perhaps are valuable for more experienced writers but not suiting or constructive for a newbie. A bit of handholding and encouragement go a long way to keep the writer's motivation going, both with critiques as well as in a forum. My two cents. Christine

I'm curious. Were there good old times when the forum worked well and if so, what made them successful? If the main reason for people not participating is a few condescending individuals, why not call them out and block them? Christine

Re: Can someone help with finding one's genre? (43 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Helpful solutions Telkontsugra. After reading your post I googled 'Historical fiction with a dash of magic' and hey, quite a bit came up. Most of my novel deals with history, it's the most prevalent theme, but with magical elements. So, another route to explore. Thanks!

Re: Can someone help with finding one's genre? (43 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Hi, CJ,
I'm not sure where I'll land but am exploring magical realism a bit more by reading books in the genre. The most famous authors are Latin-American, but their take is quite different than mine, and not really of a model. I, therefore, have to find authors who are closer to what I'm doing.
What's the title of the book you're working on? Have you published it on this site? I wonder why you think your story isn't historical? Mine plays out in two historical worlds, but since I have magical elements in the story, actually right from the beginning, I don't think classifying it as historical is the right approach. I just peeked at a Wikipedia description of Southern Gothic. It seems to be a quite specific. Not sure if that makes it easy or hard to classify. Best, Christine

Re: Can someone help with finding one's genre? (43 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Thanks so much, Jeff. Magical realism was what came first to my mind but that seemed to lead readers to believe it was fantasy. In so many ways magical realism fits the bill as the worlds per se are historical, real, while magical/fantastical elements come into play here and there. As the story progresses, my MC will come to see these fantastical elements as real, and they do belong to her adopted world. I'll take a closer look at speculative fiction. That genre had never crossed my mind. Cheers, Christine

Deckland, Thanks for stating the perspective of agents and publishers. I'm not anywhere near to query my novel but want to figure out at this stage what the rules and requirements are. Well, as to your comment that I don't know the basic facts, it's not a helpful comment. I'm asking because my novel doesn't neatly fit into a specific genre.

Re: Can someone help with finding one's genre? (43 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
Thanks, Randall, I'll take a closer look if the stories match up. Romance, however, seems to be such a clearly defined genre and though there is a love triangle in my novel, it's not what defines the story overall.
