In Murder and Midnight I have a jurisdictional dispute between a small town chief of police and the county sheriff. I am going on the premise that sheriff's office is expected to deal with major crimes because his office has more resources than a small city police force. This may change from state to state.

I agree with norm. I think I learn more from doing reviews than from the critiques that I receive. However, I really, really, enjoy, feedback from my fellow writers. Sometimes they can suggest just the right approach to get me beyond a patch of crappy writing. I guess everyone who is a paying member can post without points and if they then critique the works of others that would be fine with me.

Re: In-line review draft (3 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I wrote an inline review and saved it as a draft. Then I lost it and did another review of the same chapter. I now I think I know how to find and access drafts, but I can't delete the un-used draft.

Topic: Propose of the group? (1 replies, posted in Writing Tips & Site Help)
I found it interesting that one would post a synopsis here. I have thought about posting a synopsis for the novel I'm working on but this isn't the first place I would think of putting it. When I signed into this group I thought I would find advices about how to write in conflict, spot passive sentences, and such in my manuscript.

Change the version number.
How does the version number differ from the draft number?

Re: IMO: The Perfect Crime (3 replies, posted in Cop Shop)
A perfect crime is an unsolved crime. According to an internet source called Quora User, FBI crime records in 2010 indicated that clearance rates for murder and manslaughter in the U.S. Have fallen from about 90 percent in the 1960 to below 65 percent. They attribute the shift to the result of increasing gang and drug crime, where witnesses are afraid to come forward. I am surprised that the clearance rate was approaching 90 percent in the 1960's. Even though the Crime Scene Investigation tech has improved it appears that the absence of witnesses is an important element in committing the perfect crime.

Re: IMO: What's the best cop movie you ever saw? Was it realistic? (14 replies, posted in Cop Shop)
Realistic can be boring. I like Dirty Harry. The bad guy is pressing his gun to the waitress's temple, threatening to kill her. Harry levels his large pistol, point it at the bad guy and says, "Make my day."

Re: What do the cops want to know? (8 replies, posted in Cop Shop)
I am writing a cop murder mystery. I have no police experience and not much writing experience. Hence, when I saw the topic "What do the police want to know?" I got excited. Allenl and amy s's responses to the topic are right on. They are clear and useful. I have read a number of cop crime novels and enjoy the genre, hence my ambition to write a cop novel. I can imagine posting many questions to this forum under this topic.

Is the point system dying? Only one out of twenty new members post work to a group that is part of the point system.

Linda Lee, thank you for pointing out the Basic Infor section. I must have skipped right over it. And I thank Sol for pointing out that past postings, which have some age on the them, were classified as finished by the system. I went back and corrected the status on my biographical novel Men at War.

Topic: Status (4 replies, posted in TheNextBigWriter Premium)
I noticed that the novels I have looked at have a status listed at the top of the initial page. I have seen listings that say Draft, 1st Draft, 2nd Draft, and Finished. I assume the authors establish the status, however I can't find where it is done. What does finished mean? If I read something that is finished does it mean I am wasting my time if a leave a review?
