Thanks Allen, This answers my questions. I can see how statues can be slightly different from state to state. The guide lines are broad enough that magistrates and judges have to develop their own ideas about what is reasonable. I expect there is some case law that helps to define the limits on a magistrate. Sincerely, John

Topic: Warrants (5 replies, posted in Cop Shop)
I hope our legal experts (anyone more knowledgeable than me, or just about everybody) can answer a few questions about what kind of evidence police officers can collect. I am under the impression that items being sought as evidence need to be listed in the warrant. How specific or general should this listing be? Please give examples. If the officers are conducting a search in a business or home related to crime A but come across items related to crime B what is the proper procedure. Do they ignore the evidence? If they have seen evidence how can they un-see it?
It seems that my detectives often need search warrants. How does an officer know if he has a likely hood of getting a search warrant. Some readers seem to think my judges hand out search warrants much to liberally. Sincerely, John

Re: Registering for the Draft in 1959-60 (9 replies, posted in Cop Shop)
Yes, I remember going to the post office and filling in a post card form for the draft a few days before my eighteenth birthday. A month or so later I received a draft card, about the size of a social security card, which I was required carry at all times. The card indicated that I was Class 1-A (Available for unrestricted military service.) When I enrolled in college I was re-classified as 1-S (Student deferred). When the war in Vietnam heated up I was called up. By then I was in my early 20's. The doctor took about two minutes and said put your clothes back on. I had hemorrhoids and a bad back. I was reclassified as 1Y (Medical deferment).
My memory is a little fuzzy on some of the details. I was in graduate school at KU and I drove to Kansas City. The draftees were ordered to meet at Union Station and we were taken to the medical examination location by van. I was pretty sure I wasn't going directly into the military on that day. I don't recall having made arrangements for someone to pick up my car. I know that in WWII the military shipped men directly to a military base upon completion of the induction examination.

The inline review was a major jump forward. I especially like the X-line when I look at a response. And the messages are easy to edit for spelling. I really find it interesting when people respond to my suggestions. I like getting the feedback on my feedback. Usually people are pleased when I have spotted something that is clearly wrong. Other times people will explain why a sentence is written a certain way. Even if I have made some rather sharp remarks people usually react in a civilized way. I believe the quality of cirques and/or reviews have improved.

Re: Tips For Writing Flashbacks (1 replies, posted in Cop Shop)
I took a quick look at the article on writing flashbacks. I've seen several well used flashbacks in published work. I have been avoiding using flashbacks with a passion. I'm now having second thoughts. I'm finding that I need to bring myself and the reader up to date once in while. This happens when evidence related to a crime is introduced early on, and its significance is unknown. Sincerely, John

I use yWriter5. It is a product of Spacejock Software. For more information go to www.spacejock.com
The software was developed by a mad-scientist who likes to write science fiction. I like it, even though I don't write science fiction. However, like other writing software there is a learning curve. I am very comfortable with it. It will do most of the things Scrivener does. It is free, if you like it the developer, suggests you can contribute money to Spacejock Software. Sincerely, John

Topic: Keeping things straight (3 replies, posted in Cop Shop)
I made an outline of Murder at Midnight. It is intended to be a novel of 24 chapters. I am now on chapter 15. I've just spent a few days reorganizing my last four chapters. I some how ended up with a chapter that laid the base for an event coming after the event occurred. I think I have this straightened out now. I have some writing software that allows me to easily rearrange my scenes and chapters and renumber them on command. Anyone else out there had this problem. Sincerely, John
PS I've only post the first seven chapters to TNBW. I'm still trying to figure where to put commas.

I am a member of several different groups. I usually post my manuscript to all of them at once by making sure the little boxes are checked. From time to time I have updated a chapter to reflect changes I have made after a review. However, I must be short cutting part of the process. I keep getting reviews back that show some the old mistakes I intended to correct. I would appreciate any response if you have some idea about what I need to be doing. This is an intermediate step. I will post an other draft later that can be re-review for points later.

Re: Release from prison (5 replies, posted in Cop Shop)
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and information. I also did some internet research and found that each state has a slightly different set of rules. My guy (the protagonist) was in a New Jersey prison. It took a while but I tracked down their release policies. You get appropriate clothes and what ever is left in you prison account. If you work in a prison industry your pay is put in your prison account. Family member may contribute up to $1000 a month to a prisoners account.

Topic: Release from prison (5 replies, posted in Cop Shop)
When a person is released from prison what do they walk out the door with? I only know what I see on T.V. and in the movies. I have a number of assumption about how this works but no facts. In the movies the prisoner gives up his wallet and other personal effects and exchanges his street clothing for a prison uniform. The when he leaves I have always assumed his clothes and money are returned. He walks out the door and an old buddy picks him up in a rusting Dodge Charger. This may work if he was in for a short period of time. What happens if goes into prison weighing 180 pounds and comes out at 280 pounds. His old clothes may not fit anymore. How does this really work?

I am just checking out what I need to do to enter the short story contest. It sounds like fun. I would like clarification on a few items. When I clicked on the first story submitted it gave me the opportunity to do an inline or regular review. If I post my story to the contest site and other member review it, I am sure they will catch several silly mistakes. Can I continue to make changes in the story through May 31? It appear that some editing software counts words differently than others. How will the number of words be determined?

Topic: Puting a suspect in jail. (5 replies, posted in Cop Shop)
It is my impression that a suspect can normally be held by the police for 24 hours without being charged with a crime. When a person is charged with a crime they usually are brought before a judge for arraignment. At that time the judge determine if there is sufficient evidence to hold the suspect and may set or deny bail. I have a situation in which the police think the suspect may flee before enough of the evidence is processed to take before a judge, and the 24 hour mark is fast approaching. What can they do? Do Sundays count?.

I have had this problem, and I now use a process much like PByrd says she uses. I do narrative outlines, and read what I have written previously, no matter how long ago it might have been. Even doing all this, I still get writers block.
