Topic: I saw God today...

Hi Everyone,

When first invited to join this group, I gladly did so. But something felt off about it. The why of it came to me last night. It's the name of this group that makes me uncomfortable. To call this "Brave" due to our profession of faith in an American based public forum is ludicrous. We are no braver than the beach goers who will stand only ankle deep in the surf. No braver than the gathering crowd of onlookers behind the perceived safety of the police line. No braver than those pew-warmers at Sunday Service. Here in America, the worst that Christians stand to suffer for our faith is a few ignorant name callers. Which we’ve all faced, and somehow survived, faith intact.

If we were gathered in Iran, Egypt, Libya, or God forbid, Syria, and posted this, then yes, we would be brave. But we’re not. We are safely ensconced in our cocoon of a generally non-violent society. As my husband and I often conclude after such discussions, “Birth Lotto!” accompanied by a high-five.

I am neither left, right, nor centrist. All of those titles, including my original denomination, I reject. I am a dedicated follower of Yeshua ben Yosef. Of His teachings, His actions, His discipleship to God. His death. His resurrection. This makes me nothing more than a Christian.

Throw out that old, worn acronym, and truly place Christ in any situation. The Christ you know and love. The man who walked this earth. Imagine He is seated next to you. Now, remember He knows all that you have, and haven’t done.

Are you squirming? No? Huh. I am.

The next time you’re traveling, and you encounter a person holding a sign reading Will work for food, try to imagine how our Savior would see that unfortunate one. What would He do? Then do that.

The next time you're standing in a line, and there's a disruption (child crying, someone juggling items, someone cutting in line), try to imagine what our Savior would feel. What would He do? Then do that.

Now that would be brave.

As a group of Christians gathered together, we should be sharing how Christ walks with us each day. I have a challenge for you. Post something here each time you see/think/feel Christian. Remember, we’re taught to keep our words humble. So, no braggarts.

If you already do keep Christ first in all things, then it is an honor to be associated with you. There are very few humans who manage to do that, this typist among them. This is why the Lord told us to be accountable to one another.

I’ll end this with a caption I’d read long ago that still resonates for me.
“If Christianity were outlawed tomorrow, would there be enough evidence to convict you?”

Who's brave? Post how you saw God today...

Re: I saw God today...

I agree being a little put off by Brave, unless of course the members here feel themselves under attack.

The majority of people in the West still consider themselves Christians, even if they don't actively practice their faith.

Re: I saw God today...

Hi Dirk,

From what Sol and others have told me, if you mention any type of religious affiliation in the main forum people will attack and condemn you for it. I had learned that after he removed a thread I had started called "Good Advice I Learned Today" I just had a tiny part of information from the first sermon of the "Brave" series of sermons my church I attend was doing and he warned me people would ignore the advice and attack the religious information. That's when Sol got the idea to have me moderate the Christian group on tNBW.

True we might not have to be as "Brave" about standing up for our religious beliefs in the West, but being "Brave" isn't just about that. It's also about acting "Brave" when faced with any scary decision that life throws at you.  It's about remembering those people in countries that are still being persecuted for their beliefs. It's about standing up to bullies in school. It's about standing up to injustices you see in this world.

So yes I'm calling for Christians to be "Brave" in the face of any and all opposition they may see, face or endure. And to act upon that to start making this world a better place for all of us to live.

And like JL is challenging us at the end of her post. To look for God in what we see around us.

Re: I saw God today...

Fair enough.

Re: I saw God today...

I went to a concert the other night with some friends. We're a group of eight, and we bought the tickets the moment they went on sale (November, I think?). During that time, one of the members of our group, we'll call her Linda, had emergency surgery. Her husband called me that night, and we prayed. She's been through so much. Of all the people in our little circle, she's one of the weakest.

Anyway, I hadn't seen her for nearly four weeks. But that night, when Linda walked up to me, smiling, I saw God as a glimmer of healthy joy in her eyes.

Re: I saw God today...

But then again, there's still prejudice against Christians in developed countries too like the USA and here in the UK

Re: I saw God today...

Can I write this without offending anyone?
My sister lost her only son. He was 26. Yet, she gets up each day and try's to go on with her life. She has been a brittle diabetic for almost 50 years. They told her as a young child she likely wouldn't live past her twenties. Her humble house burned a few weeks ago. She is living in a very old house without running water until they can get something else in place. She went over to check on her mother-in-law the other day. She found her dead sitting on her couch. Her son was murdered. She told me she has no hope any more. She told me she went to her doctor the other day and all she could do was cry. The doctor asked her why she was crying...she said, "I miss my son...."
Getting up every day. Going about the basics of life. Wondering why you are still here. Trusting Jesus...that's brave.

Re: I saw God today...

Thanks for sharing, Radley. There is no offense that I could glean from your post, in any way, shape, or form. Heart-breaking. Yes. But offensive? No.

There are so many injustices in this life. Yours is a primary example. Only the Father knows why some people suffer so greatly, while others sail through life unhindered. We like to believe those who suffer much in this life will have the greater rewards in the next, but we can't say for sure.

If that is true, however, your friend should be rich beyond measure.

Re: I saw God today...

Thank you, JL. I had hoped to write about this in the contest but didn't get it done in time. So, I just wanted to write this little piece. I am humbled by her spirit.

Re: I saw God today...

Love the article on the VA cat! My hubby was going through a hard time a few years ago so I found us a little kitten. Her name is Lily. Peace Lily. And I prayed she would bring him peace, which she has!!!
