Re: Song list for John Hamler

I find inspiration in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwgr_IMeEgA
"Rise Up"

You're broken down and tired
Of living life on a merry-go-round
And you can't find the fighter
But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out
Move mountains
We gonna walk it out
And move mountains

And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
And I'll rise up
High like the waves
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
For you
For you
For you
For you

When the silence isn't quiet
And it feels like it's getting hard to breathe
And I know you feel like dying
But I promise we'll take the world to its feet
Move mountains
Bring it to its feet
Move mountains
And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
For you
For you
For you
For you

All we need all we need is hope
And for that we have each other
And for that we have each other
And we will rise
We will rise
We'll rise
We'll rise

I'll rise up
Rise like the day
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I will rise a thousand times again
And we'll rise up
High like the waves
We'll rise up
In spite of the ache
We'll rise up
And we'll do it a thousand times again
For you
For you
For you
For you

Re: Song list for John Hamler

I think out of all of Vern's suggestions I appreciated the Neil Diamond one the mostest. He can be corny at times but there's just something about his delivery that draws you in. If you're in need of a guitar riff that will instantly put a shit-eating grin on your face, listen to this live version of CRUNCHY GRANOLA SUITE. I actually had his song as my wake-up alarm clock ring tone for years. But then I switched to MAN IN THE BOX by Alice in Chains because... Well, it seemed more in tune with my downtrodden lifestyle, I'm afraid.

Anyway...

I thought Dagny's Andra Day selection was pretty cool, too. I don't usually go for histrionic singing (and would never have come across or indeed stopped long enough to listen to it without Dagny's suggestion) but... Yeah. I kinda/sorta dig it. Makes me wanna introduce y'all to this rather mannish-looking lady:

Amazing, right? Thank me later.

Re: Song list for John Hamler

Here's another one I just thunk of

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYRTK62pVWQ

I don't necessarily agree with the homophobic aspects of the lyrics, but... It was a different time, I guess. The overall message is applicable to this crisis we're all going thru, however. The powerlessness we all feel, I mean.

Cheers

Well, I've heard this song before, but I've never seen it performed. The ship tat distracted me, because I got one for my 65th birthday and it hurt like hell. It's a small one, 3'' x 3", that my granddaughter drew and has on her forearm. Did I say it hurt like hell? So...I cringed the whole way through that song thinking about the pain an entire ship would have caused. Other than that, I liked it.

This is one I really like, while it doesn't really encourages me the way Rise Up does, it's just a catchy tune:

This one seems to fit the mood during these semi-shut-in times. I auditioned this for America's Got Talent several years ago and changed the words to fit in with the audition. Of course they warn you not to be original but what the hell, it seemed like a good idea at the time. They had told us the audition would only last ninety seconds so I figured they would stop me before I got too far in, but unfortunately they didn't stop me and I got a bit nervous and forgot the words about halfway through, lol. This is how I rewrote the words:

Before the AGT audition
I couldn’t find a way to hold my head that didn’t hurt
But the chorus I sang for breakfast wasn’t bad
So I did one more for dessert
Then I fumbled in the closet through my clothes
And found my blackest lucky shirt
Then I looked in the mirror and pumped myself
And sauntered down the stairs to meet the day.

I’d agonized the night before
With doubts of which song I’d be pickin’
But I practiced this little one
Strummin’ on an air guitar that I was stickin’
Then I walked into that little room
And I could almost taste the friction
And it reminded me of those nerves I’d lost
Somewhere, somehow along the way
Oh, that AGT audition
I’m praying, Lord, that I’ll get through
‘Cause there’s something ‘bout those judges
That gets a fellow feeling blue.
And there’s nothing short of dying
That’s half as lonesome as the sound
Of listening to your heartbeat
Waiting for the AGT hammer to come down, hmm, hmm, hmm

Take care. Vern

This was really good. A couple of them actually sounded like they belong on Broadway.

Re: Song list for John Hamler

A kinda/sorta fun thing to do during this epidemic crisis with nothing for us to do (except WRITE, that is!) is to go on YouTube and watch black people REACT to white people doing shit like singing, dancing, and performing stand-up comedy. I know that might sound like racist curiosity (while at the same time sounding like I'm taking it for granted that most of the people on this website are probably Caucasian) but I'm really not trying to be antagonistic. It's actually quite informative and entertaining at the same time. Seriously. Just pick your favorite song or performance or whatever and the chances are that a male or female of African persuasion has made a personal video about it.

Here. I'll get y'all started down the rabbit hole with AC/DC...

If rock and roll ain't your thing try this Game of Thrones/Red Wedding:

Or this comedy shite, about black vs white fashion...

You're welcome, I'm sure. Well, it's better than silence while we're sitting at home or walking around like bank robbers. I'm still waiting on that one. BTW, folks, a toilet paper factory blew up in Maine so better stock up on magazines and corn cobs,  lol. Take care. Vern

My contribution. According to John Denver, perfectly suited for shut-ins.

Downright good one to perk up memories of a more social existence. Gets my heart pumpin' for those days of yore. Thank you ma'am. Take care. Vern

You are welcome, sir.  I had heard about this song but had never taken the time to listen to it. I thought John Denver's rendition was great but looked up a couple of earlier ones, including the one song by the author of it. All were great.

I actually enjoy the original SOUNDGARDEN/Chris Cornell version better

but that's just a matter of taste and style, I guess.

Hang in there, people!!
