Topic: Need help with my novella

Hi. I might've posted this message in the wrong way and/or wrong area on the 8th. If I did so, I'm very sorry. I'm going to be trying to prepare my novella, The Ancients, for publication. I'm hoping some of you are willing to help me. I don't harbor proverbial great expectations for the book, but I'd like to at least follow through and see if I can get it published. FULL EFFORT - those, to me, are the words to live by. If I give something my all and fail or 'fail,' then I'm NOT discouraged! I know that some things are meant and not meant to be. I'm very much in line with those sayings.

That said, I'd be VERY grateful for whatever help any of you can/will provide. I'm not saying I'll fully agree, but I WON'T be stubborn or mean about it. Fact is, most of you know a great deal more than I when it comes to writing and reviewing.

Please let me know on this forum and/or by message.

Thanks big time!!

Mike

Re: Need help with my novella

I don't see anything with that title. Have you not posted it yet? Or maybe it was posted under another working title?  JP

Re: Need help with my novella

Hi Mike, I just searched for your novella. It didn't show up in the regular postings, but when I started a search it did show up. Most likely you restricted who can see it. Perhaps go back to your settings and change it. Don't know if you'd have to pay with points again.

Re: Need help with my novella

JP, Christine,

Mike has multiple pages of stories up under his portfolio (many actually). It's on the second page. Published with points.

Re: Need help with my novella

Are you intending to self-publish, Mike? Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is the way I published my novel. It's relatively easy to do, but there are a few steps you have to take-- and in the right order.

I'd be happy to help.

Bill

Re: Need help with my novella

Mike, I've never seen anyone with a portfolio as large as yours. Very impressive.

Re: Need help with my novella

Mike--
Found it, with Norm's help. Maybe you could go to your portfolio and drag it to the first or second place on your list to feature it, so it appears on your profile page. (Wait a minute---how do you drag something from one page to another? Hmm...)

Another thing to do is give it a cover image so it's easier to find.

Well, it's going on my reading list now. Good luck with the publishing part of your journey.  JP

Re: Need help with my novella

Wow! Thanks to each of you! I shall drag the novella to the first spot. I've got it posted in two places, lol. Again, BIG thanks to each of you!

Re: Need help with my novella

Question: once I amend a chapter along the lines of what is suggested, how exactly do I post(repost?) the corrected chapter?

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Need help with my novella

I'll be happy to help where I can, Mike.  Just let me know what you need.

Excited for you!

MJ

Re: Need help with my novella

Mike, I should have asked you what you wanted, but just went ahead with your chapter 1 and reviewed it. Might not be at all what you want. Just toss what doesn't fit.

Thanks,

You can either edit over the existing chapter contents with the changes, which requires no points, or republish, which requires points. Generally,, if you want people to rereview the new version of the chapter, hide the old and republish the new. If you just want to make the changes for new reviewers going forward, then edit over the old. It's all done through the Publish Wizard. Just explore and you should be able to figure it out. If not, drop another note here along for help. Note, if you delete a chapter, all of the reviews associated with it will be deleted as well. Fortunately, you can just make it inactive if you plan to revisit it later. Also, publishing the revised chapter for points will make it reappear on the home page of all members.

Re: Need help with my novella

Actually, I just edited all seven chapters I posted on the site, carefully noted the suggested changes in my original manuscript, but the reviews didn't disappear.

Re: Need help with my novella

Christine, did you edit them, or delete them and republish? As far as I know, the reviews only disappear if you delete the original chapters.

Re: Need help with my novella

Norm, I started with pasting the new version of the chapter on top of the old one, then deleted the old version which was now at the bottom.
To be safe, I made sure ahead of time that all the suggestions writers had given me, were transcribed on my original manuscript. I expected all the reviews were gone, but they weren't. I just didn't want to deal with an invisible version.

Re: Need help with my novella

Technically, that's just editing in the text window, even though you deleted text. There is a separate menu option to completely delete a chapter. I believe it's under the Content tab of the Publish Wizard. I almost never do that, preferring to make the old chapter inactive and adding a new chapter with the same chapter number, but with an incremented version number. Only the owner of the portfolio can then see the inactive chapters (and their reviews), whereas your readers only see the active chapters. Although editing the text requires no additional points, the chapter also doesn't reappear on the home pages of everyone on the site. Adding a new chapter with an incremented version number requires points and makes the new chapter reappear on everyone's home page.

Re: Need help with my novella

Thanks for the clarification, Norm. I decided not to run the edited chapters on the site for one not to ask too much from writers by having to go through it all again in such a short period of time. At the same time, if someone decides to go back I want them to have the newer version.

Re: Need help with my novella

Thanks, Norm. I'll see what's the best option and go with it.

Re: Need help with my novella

Thanks again, everybody, for all of your help! Like I've said, I might not agree with all opinions, but I'm grateful for the time and effort put forth by each of you!! If I can at least revise each chapter, make each installment considerably better, then I'll be more content.
CHEERS!!
