It is now numbered Ch13, =Regrouping=.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

I'll probably do some minor prose tweaks.  Nothing major.  If you're planning on doing a review, don't let that stop you.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Current work:
Prose tweaks per above.
Thinking through and outlining the 'turn-the-tide' healing Maurand chapter.  I'd written it a while ago, but it doesn't quite fit the timeline.  Fitting it will probably mean expanding it a little, and I don't mind doing that.  I also want to torture Shassa and Engalt a bit.
Planning some of Melayne's adventures.  I plan to run her into a World she and Caneth had visited in the past.  That calls for a big flashback/reminiscence, which means (a) I have to keep it short while having it big (oops) and I need to work out some of the dynamics between the much younger Caneth and Melayne.
In line with those dynamics, a very small change to Merran's reminiscence of the death of Bartell.  You  might not even notice it.

Edits made to Regrouping.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

I've had a wholly unrelated problem earworming my creative mind for much of the last week.  I also spent yesterday with family, and am thinking about going to view the eclipse totality 11 days hence.  The mindworm hasn't quite run its course, but I've had a relapse with a stonger strain that should burn it out of me in another day or two.  (First infection: high speed number generation.  Relapse: the well-trodden problem of enumerating N-choose-K.)

Back on line for a bit. Will try to find time for Regrouping. Did you like the eclipse?

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Great to watch.  Nightmare of traffic.  It was the day every university in the South had their students move in.  And going home ... the evening rush hour is always twice as bad as the morning. More details if you want them, but ... I was away from home for about 62 hours.  39+1/2 of them were on the road, half or more in stop-and-go traffic.  My car decided it wanted an oil change with less than 2k miles since the last one.  I left for home at 13:30 on Tuesday and got there at 04:30 on Wednesday.

A murrain 'pon those who don't bother to notice that their response to traffic congestion is to make the congestion worse!

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

My niece had the same problem. The traffic was awful. She was in Kentucky and it took her more than 18 hours to get to Pittsburgh. At least you made it without incident. Nice to know that traffic congestion isn't just limited to your state :-)

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Whazzup wit' NJC?

Well, I've reached a point where I see how my work isn't good enough, but I'm groping blindly for better.  I need to push on through this.

I also need to renumber chapters ... which suggests I also need to manage structure better, to do more in less, to give each item more roles to play.

I give myself 'til midnight Friday.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

hmmm I can honestly say my work will never be "good enough". I'm always going to be pushing my boundaries and if I somehow reach those, I'll push the envelope.

When you say manage structure, are you talking about macroeconomics or micro?

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Yes, and all in between and at the extremes.  But here the selection of events to advance milieu, character, plot, theme, and thesis.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Whilst I srtuggle with the simplest of scenes, I also see that I've got to rethink the ensemble I plan to introduce.

1,340

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

what's the scene? is it steamy?

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Not at all.  Confontation in the street.  Subtexts.

Had a BFO while thinking about SSnape, best conceived character I've ever read.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Is Merran doing the confronting? Is she confronting with great fortitude?

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Not in this one.  She's called to fprbearance.  Later, though ...

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

The screen on my flaptop has died.  It looks like mechanical damage.  Not sure how long it will be out of service.  W/o it it's not even feasible to look for a replacement.

1,345

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

I hope to have the replacement screen no later than Thursday.  Then I need to put the thing together ... and that's gonna be tough with my fingers crossed.

1,346

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Still expect the replacement screen on Thursday.  Crossing fingers I don't fardle the works when I put it back together.  One connector, four screws, a repaired snap-on bezel, two more screws, and sticky covers (which I can do without) for the screws.

But I'll power it up and chexk before I snap that bezel back in.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Laptop screens are fun to replace. I once received a free like-new laptop because a customer didn't want to deal with the hassle of replacing the screen, which they had broken by stepping on the darn thing.

1,348

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

Gee, I wish I'd had you for this.  I broke the bezel in one place pulling it off.  I give the assisred superglue a 55% chance of holding it together when I snap it back on.  And you can bet I'll test the thing before I do.

Re: The Sorcerer's Progress

THE FLAPTOP IS BACK UP!!

I kept tape on the bezel repair while I put it back on.  The repair held.  I don't expect it to hold if I have to take it off again.

Now where to put that spare screen ... ?  I'm down to negative space in my apartment.

I'll start to get caught up before breakfast.  Now ... if my internet provider doesn't get flaky again ...

Do replacement screens often end up brighter?  Mine seems to be.
