Oh, I added to the last chapter entitled, "Sanctuary."  You'll be pleased with me, Janet. I got to elaborate on a mar penis.

There are no changes before the place that I ended the previous chapter. I will repub with points at any request. The only reason I haven't is because I might delete the reviews on this chapter and I have to integrate those crits before I risk losing them to a repub.

Merry Xmas. Your wish has come true, Janet. Sheesh. These romance writers. The things I do to please people:-)

That mar was either built like the dirty old b-----d king of England, or else  ... well, see the parts about 'appendages' here: http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/countries … e/021.html .  Londo was using one of his, er, six ... to cheat at cards.

Regarding your reply for chapter 19. OK, when you explain it here it makes perfect sense, but I wasn't aware of any of this information when I read the chapter. I don't recall reading anything that defines this underground world and the way it works. Maybe it was in another book I haven't read yet, or it's something I have forgotten. In any case I think it would be justified to explain why this underground world is the way it is to the reader. If you have to explain something to a reader, after the fact, then it's not working in the book.

point taken. I either need to eliminate the signs of life around the beach, or I need to have Tazar comment and then have Jaylene teach. That way, the transition is anticipated rather that confusing anyone (Mister Fussy Pants!)

Oh, Janet, I received your Xmas Card. You gave me the gift of books…even better, I have a whole building of books to noodle through to find the PERFECT book. Thanks for making me say, "Awwww!" Enjoy your holidays, American style and make sure you let us know about your favorite experience (and first sledding trip:-)

Big pleasure and the least I could do! I hope there's some spare change for a book or two for C and S too?! But if you spend it all on yourself, that's also okay, I'll just send theirs separately next time! smile

LOL, you calling someone 'Mr Fussy Pants!' hahahaha pot, kettle, kettle, pot ... tongue

I'm going to check out the mar's penis now. I hope 'tis exactly as I imagined on the way to work one dark, cold morning ...

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

We are in full prep mode for sledding. Got tire chains too. I just need to revisit all the notes you and njc shared regarding driving and preparedness for cold conditions, but I think we've got it all covered. For the first trip we're not planning to go (whatever the American equivalent of the Outback is). So if we get into any trouble, we should get help pretty quick. I have to say, what I've experienced so far, we'll have more help than what we need. Folks around here are super friendly, nice, and helpful. I've also been told the accent works like a charm! smile

On the tire chains, we've only seen it used on two tires at a time, not all four. Is that enough or do we need a chain for each wheel? Thanks!!!!

Would you put Yaktrax on the shoes on half your feet, or on the shoes on all your feet?

If you're in an area that does snow clearance well, you don't need chains.  In the NY/NJ area, you don't need them.  In North Carolina, you do need them, because NC doesn't know how to deal with ice/snow mixes.  They continue to rely on salt when salt alone will be overwhelmed and you need sand in the mix.

Depends, if I only use one foot for traction, why would I bother to put Yaktrax on both of them? Or not?

Where we planning to go, I've been told they clear the roads pretty well, but after heavy snow there might be a couple of days where they recommend you at least have chains with you. In general, this is what everyone told me too - have them rather than not. But it sounds like we need more chains either way ...

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Even with front wheel drive, your rear wheels provide stability.  If you spin out, it's not because your front wheels have lost traction; it's because your rear wheels have lost traction.  And yes, I've spun out twice, once at about seven mph in snow over ice and once at highway speed when everyone hit what must have been an oily puddle.  I almost recovered before someone else nearly sideswiped me trying to regain control himself--and that's when I overcontrolled and spun out.

Someone has mentioned this, but now I can't remember if it was someone here or someone at work ... And when you say 'fill the trunk with kitty litter', the kitty litter is still in bags, yes? Just checking, you Canadians are a different species altogether! tongue

Wow, that sounds not good at all. Okay, 2 sets of 2 chains it will be. Thanks njc. Or kitty litter ...

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

During the Carter years, mortgage rates were so high, one couple was featured eating cat food just so they could make their payments. Of course, I don't remember those years personally. According to Amy, I'm much too young for that.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

The problem in the Carter years wasn't the mortgage rates.  People plan for those.  It was double-digit inflation with the addition of OPEC oil shocks.  I remember the bumper stickers: FECK OPUC!

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

I really have no idea. I've never used chains on my tires. They tear up the road, so you can only use them in big snow (best guess is four feet or so) I'm going to read on and see if anyone answered this.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Dirk, you forced me to guess rather than 'des sing your age. I left a wide margin for error. Your typing voice is youthful. Carter years, hmmm?

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

There are states in which the law requires you to carry chains during snow season.  They're only supposed to be mounted in snow conditions--and really the problem is icing, not snow alone.  These include northern mountain states.  But if I lived in NC, I'd want them, because NC's handling of icing conditions is incompetent and ruinous, relying on salt when no plausible amount of salt would melt its way through the ice layer.  Then you need sand, either alone or with salt.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Washington allows the use of chains from Nov 1 to Mar 1. It tears up the road if there isn't snow, but given you can only drive max 30 mph with them, it's not a long term solution. Snow tires is probably the way to go it you drive daily in conditions that require them. But what do I know, right? smile

I do know that we have a couple of passes that require you have them in your car. And if you want to go to some national parks (Yosemite is one), they are also required. Given that we really don't know anything or what we're doing, to be honest, I'd rather have them than not. We've got stuck in mud a couple of times, and it's really not fun.

I've checked out snow tires and stud tires, but for our purposes, chains seem the optimum solution. You get nice ones that's really easy to put on - we've gone for mid range - some effort, but some comfort/ease as well although not the best/easiest there is.

NC better get with it. Why do they insist when there are a best practice out there that works? *shakes head, government right?*

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

When your population is in dense conurbations and along moderately dense road corridors, doing the clearing/salting/sanding job well can be cost-effective.   When your population is sparser AND less concentrated, the cost becomes prohibitive.

Outside the snow belt, you only have two or three really bad situations every two years and people chalk it up to Act of God and Nature.  But where you can get several serious storms, and occasionally get seven or more (one year the NYC are got 13 falls of 1 foot+ --the piles didn't melt until late April) voters start to consider the problems the fault of the government.  (Read about John Lindsay.)

When you blame government, remember that one of the foundation rules of both economics and management is that people respond to incentives. Remember also that when you hire an agent to do or manage something for you, he acts for you until his own self-interest is endangered.  (Economists call this the Agency Problem.)

These two things explain 90% of the problems we have with government doing things.  (You need to add Riccardo's Law of comparative advantage, brilliantly explained in PJO'Rourke's =Eat the Rich=, and a few other things like specialization and economy of scale.)

This is the wrong venue to bring this up, so hopefully I won't get booted out. I saw Star Wars yesterday. I give it a B, maybe a B+.
I was expecting that paying some homage was due, and it was. But, while the new characters were good,, and there was finally a woman pilot in an X-wing, the plot and story paralleled episodes 4 an 5 too much. Maybe the next one will be fresh.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

Don't mind talking about this at all, because it has to do with analyzing a plot.

JJ was limited by a plot that Lucas dictated. My understanding is that JJ will have the chance to make a fourth movie once the other three are produced…one that will allow him to tell his own story.

Overall, the movie was worth big corn/ full price/ one viewing. (at least to me). I enjoyed the scenery, but re-hashing the same risk/ plot/ space ship combat was wash-rinse-repeat. The sword fighting was nice. The scenes where she scavenges the spaceship was novel and fun. I liked the fact that they showed the new Vader face, and that the Sith is mentally ill as he fights the good/bad urges that  the Force makes him feel. I really liked the explanation of 'I'm so tired of the pain.'  Excellent reasoning for why people turn and become bad.

I loved the stormtrooper's lies as he tried to impress the girl. I loved it when they flew the ship together and then gushed about what a great experience it was.

I don't understand why anyone can activate a lightsaber. I don't like that Leia didn't fall over when the planet nearby died. I don't like that there weren't planetary complications and meteor showers starting on their planet after the planets died. There were a lot of rules that changed, but JJ is now the "Keeper of the Keys" and gets to decide what is cannon and what is the new reality.

I'm just glad that there are Xwings and Y wings duking it out again.

Anyone else want to poke holes in the plot?

Feel free.

Re: Acts/ Dictates/ Mandates/ Mantle - Amy's Thread

I'm not sure about holes in the plot, as I'm fairly new to the plot-tearing business, but I personally didn't care for Finn as a character. Maybe it's just not my kind of humor. In contrast, I really liked his counterpart, Rey. It was kind of neat to see a Han Solo-similar personality on a Jedi character. smile

As a side note, I think they did a really good job with the musical score and the "look and feel" of things. The environment really felt like Star Wars.
