Re: Site Bugs 2

I have a bug that I've noticed in the "Invite to read" bit under the "Actions" tab of my portfolio.

I've invited one person by entering an email, did the captcha, and sent the email along its way. Then, I want to send another story to another person (or the same person). When I use the drop-down and select "Invite to read" again. I get an immediate popup telling me "Email already sent". I can't get past that for ANY of my stories unless I refresh the page.

Re: Site Bugs 2

I had the same thing happen to me, Tom, except with the site's own messaging system. I think I was trying to message the same person twice. I'll try refreshing if it happens again.

Re: Site Bugs 2

I found another bug in the x-lines. If you leave a review and then want to go back in to add something (e.g., if you thought of something else to add), if you click on x-lines, the edit box at the bottom of the review is incorrect. It's showing what appears to be the unformatted database text (e.g., with <p> paragraph markers and so on), instead of a proper text box. The bug is reproducable.

Re: Site Bugs 2

There is still something not right about the way the Visit Your Groups control works on the home page. Sol, you said the links to topics go away when it's been read. I'm not seeing that at all. It behaves as if there is a timeout on the links, but without a predictable amount of time. I added comments to several threads in the medieval group today, and they showed up in the control right after that, but then disappeared only a few hours later. Other times, I've seen thread links displayed in the control for much longer periods of time.

Is it that the links go away when the *originator* of the thread has read it? That might explain the unpredictable behavior I'm seeing.

Thanks.
Dirk

EDIT: Case in point, this post. After I left it, I saw the link appear on the home page. I went in, read it, and then came back to the home page. It's still there. I'm fine with that, as long as it's there long enough for regular (daily) visitors on the site to read them.

The link was there for me to see and read anyway. Take care. Vern

Edit: And now it's gone, replaced by my post about ten seconds later.

I've also noticed this. Both when you do an IL review or reply to an IL review. I've been going back to the normal view which requires a lot of navigation to the top of the page and back to the bottom of the page. It gets cumbersome quickly.

Re: Site Bugs 2

Having two problems;
1) I set the search criteria in reviews to pull up all regular reviews of chapter 1. I read and apply a review, then try to use the back arrow to return to my specialized list, but the screen goes gray. Back at Square 1, I have to reenter the reviews page, reset the criteria, and pull up the list again. I'm trying to read many reviews. This could take forever! I tried it without the special sort, and it doesn't happen--just goes back normally.

2) In weeding out my old messages, I had so many, I chose to delete whole pages at a time. The same thing happened, only scarier. The entire screen went gray, with no tnbw headings at all. I had to pull up another tab on the browser and reenter the tnbw site before I could do anything.

So, what's with the blank screens?  JP

Re: Site Bugs 2

I have found, JP, that it is impossible to mass-delete any messages. If you check more than one (or use the "check all messages on this page" box) you will fail to delete any messages. That leaves deleting them one by one, which is just not going to happen for me. It really needs to be worked on.

Re: Site Bugs 2

I found that I am unable to search for the author amy s using the find feature on the menu at the top (the magnifiying glass icon). I tried Amy, amy, Amy S, amy s, and s. No luck. Makes me wonder who else is not being found in searches. My own username works.

Re: Site Bugs 2

I just got an email about a private message, but the message is not (yet) visible on either the  home or messages page.

Re: Site Bugs 2

Found another 60 second timeout delay. I clicked on The Next Big Writer label at the top of the screen to go to my home page, then changed my mind and clicked on my menu and selected Portfolio instead without waiting for the first operation to finish. It hung. Repeatable. Win7/Google Chrome.

Thanks.

Reminds me: Went to the doctor and said, "Doc, my leg hurts in three places." Doc says, "Stay out of those places." lol. Take care. Vern

Re: Site Bugs 2

If you'd spent as many 60-second timeouts waiting for the site as I have, you'd be talking to a shrink rather than a regular doctor. :-)

Re: Site Bugs 2

I really like the new inline review format and the new regular review. However, I often don't know whether to do an inline or regular review unit I am well into a chapter. I use Microsoft One-Note to make notes as I read. I also copy lines of text to One-Note which I want to comment on. My problem is with the text I copy from the chapter. If I decide to do a regular review and copy my notes into the review box the text I copied from the chapter looks fine, but when I submit it the copied text disappears.  The same seems to be true if I send a private message to another TNBW member. I have attempted to change my habits but once in a while I forget. When I paste into the box everything is there with no hint of a problem. When it is received on the other end the text copied from the chapter is gone. Sincerely, John

Hello, John, we all have our own way of doing things of course, but I try to simplify things with the review process. First off, I read the whole thing first to get a true feeling of the plot, pace, flow, etc. By doing so, I rarely need to make notes, just make comments as I come to them on the second reading.

If it is a long piece such as a several thousand word chapter or short story, then I'm going to go the in-line review route period. For me, it doesn't make sense to have to copy and paste many sections of text (I generally do well into double digit comments) or type them into a regular review since we no longer have to with this new format.

For shorter pieces such as poems or flash fiction, I'll go the regular review route and simply type directly into the comment box. Now you can still use the in-line format and save the typing using the highlight feature, but since there are generally many less comments, I don't usually go that route.

You can also simulate the regular review within the in-line to avoid any retyping of text. Just highlight and make your comment. If you have general remarks not pertaining to a specific text, such as introductory statements, then I just highlight one word at the beginning or where convenient and use the box to make general comments. And of course the final box is also available for adding things not covered specifically in the text. And a great feature is that you can go back at any time and edit comments you have made and other folks can add remarks also.

In short, except for very short works (and maybe even then), the in-line is a much more efficient method of reviewing even if you want to treat it as a regular review - only drawback to that is you would need the minimum comments to get the points and that is pushing on very short works. Overall, it saves many keystrokes. Well, that's what works for me anyway. Take care. Vern

Re: Site Bugs 2

The Visit Your Groups control that shows up on the right of the Inline Posted Reviews tab doesn't show any active threads, even though they show up on other web pages in the site, including the home page. I'm surprised the control isn't the same throughout the site. Perhaps a parameter passing problem.

Re: Site Bugs 2

Sol, I ran a print copy of the inline review that Amy_s recently did of my Sorcerer's Progress Book 1, Chapter 5.  Starting on page four, a number of the comments were missing, even though the text was highlighted.

Re: Site Bugs 2

How does one go about deleting a draft inline review that is no longer needed? I started one, couldn't find 5 things to report, and just backed off the page. I thought that would suffice, but now I am nagged by the notation "Draft inline review" and can't get rid of it.

Ok. Will look into these problems.

This is definitely a nuisance.

We're going to make some changes in the next month or two that will hopefully end these time-out problems for good.

Thank you, sir.

Re: Site Bugs 2

File this under connection problems.  I'm connected for this communication via WiFi.  My flaptop is attempting to use the same WiFi service, but whatever is happening has convinced IE that I'm not connected to a network -- but I can make an IE tab connect to FreeBSD.org without difficulty.  (FreeBSD.org is one of the most reliable sites on the web.  I use it as a touchstone for connection problems.)  See my previous queries about jumbo frames and such.

Re: Site Bugs 2

Did it to me again, Sol. Only this time, I got finessed out of getting any points because I backed out of an in-line review by clicking the "Return to posting" button at the bottom. I think this should be turned into an "Escape" button - one that simply cancels your intention to submit an in-line review. You already have the "Save it" and the "Submit it" buttons, so why does this extra button also submit it?

I will go ahead and submit a normal review anyway because I have lots of points, but it is wrong not to have gotten them.

EDIT: Now, this is strange. After being told I would not get any points because I'd already reviewed this chapter, I closed the entire tab, went back to the notification email, and clicked the link again. This time, it said at the top "No review from you" and I was able to submit a normal review. Something doesn't jibe here.

Sol, I looked at this again, and I thin the problem may occur when there are unquoted double quotes in the review text.  I'll try to get some useful screencaps.  Is the snassi address still correct?

Fascinating ... it does not occur on the screen version, only when printed.  That's through IE.  The print preview from Chrome shows no such problem.  I'll run the print from Chrome, too.
