I am a writer with a following but I am a poor marketer. As a PhD I feel my books are too academic for the genres I use but this is not the feedback I get. I used Draft2Digital and Smashwords but sold very few ebooks and paperbacks. I used Amazon and sold even fewer. I offer public speaking as my main presention, I might sell one or two wo books but usually none.
I have published fifteen books so far. I started with the mystery/thriller genre. I found this was overcowded and required too mch money for promotions. New Zealand's currency is weak, shipping is slow and dearer than the books, purchasers seem put off by the New Zealand tag.
I have experimented with genres. As well as the thrillers I have written hybrid historical, mainstream social with a touch of crime, teen and Young Adult.
As a pensioner money is tight, made worse by shipping costs, inflation, weak local currency and literary isolation. My costs are ten times my earnigs over several years.However, I cannot stop writing and sharing my work.
